She listened as he spoke about maris, freezing at his last sentence. "if I wanted maris, I would have her, but why would I want the less beautiful princess?" he brushed his warm lips against her cool one and strode off. Her face turned bright red in a mix of fury and embarrassment. she whipped around, watching diego order for Julianna to dance with him, her upper lip twitched, and her usual calm demeanor was upset. Her hands were in balls at her sides, and she probably looked like an upset toddler right now. Her fingers were on fire, frost trickled up her hands as she watched. A cool breath of wind hit her face as Maris slipped up next to her.
"I hate him. No I don't. Yes, yes I do. I am livid." She growled, her eyebrows furrowing as she closed her eyes in a blink for a long time, looking at her. "This prince, - he drives me mad." She looked around, and it seemed like everyone was staring at her. "Prince Diego just kissed her and left her to go dance with another princess." Her eyes welled up to the brim, and she blinked a couple of times to get rid of the tears. She was more embarrassed now, looking over at Maris, She curled her fingers into a fist again, running her fingers through her loose curls, watching Diego as he asked Julianna for a dance. She knew that the princess wouldn't say no, as the queen and king were watching and they would punish her if she didn't. "I'm ready to go home, Mar." she kind of looked at the ground, her hair falling in her face. As she pushed the platinum blonde mess away from her face, people were still watching her, and the music was slowing down into the pace of a waltz. She was never good at any dances, but the waltz was one that she could do.
she reached down to her mid thigh and fixed her dress, letting the bottom float back down to the ground. She sighed, listening to Diego ask Julianna about her rumor. what about your rumor diego, didn't know it was so hard to say if you had a child or not. she thought to herself snarkily, her lip turning up at the thought. She kept grumbling to herself, before she looked up at Maris. "micah seems to be having a good time, as usual." she scoffed, crossing her arms, before realizing it was unladylike to do so and uncrossing them.

xxxHe couldn't help but be impressed with her. Augustus was used to the typical pretty girl that he met at these sort of functions, but he could honestly say he didn't expect her. When she offered to help him learn the ladies names and houses, he furrowed his brow, conflicted. "No, no. I've already taken up too much of your time here. I wouldn't want you to miss an opportunity to dance with one of the princes. I hear Micah can really swing a good foxtrot." He said, trying to focus her attention back on the princes, which he assumed was her primary goal for being here this evening. In truth, he really did want to ask her, but he knew that would be selfish of him and really out of his place to ask.
xxx The slow rolling music was the perfect pace for a conversation, so Augustus obliged her. "Well, I suppose I started five years ago. I was fourteen and hired as a stable boy because i was so good with the horses. I became a escort, then a guard, and became Diego's personal guard almost three years ago. I guess that was an ambitious path for a young boy, but I'm very good at getting what I want. " He said boldly. He was growing more comfortable with her company, but was still careful not to overstep his bounds. Diego wouldn't be happy if he annoyed one of his guests.
xxx The music died down for a few minutes between songs. Augustus let his hands fall away from Elliana's body and he took a step backwards. It was wonderful dancing with her, but he was sure she was eager to move on to her next prince. The ballroom was growing warm and stuffy, with the sickly sweet smell of perfume and sweat in the air. It was high time when one of the fireworks took off with a bright shrill scream into the air. The big show wasn't for another hour at least, but someone must have let this one fly on accident. Still, it reminded Augustus of the festivities outside. He was keen on seeing his way out, but also wanted to linger for Diego's sake, but also because he was curious to know more about this blossom princess.
xxx Augustus looked back to Elliana and saw her hesitating to venture back into the crowd. Following his own desires, he returned to her side again. "So, care to tell me about these princesses?" He spoke for behind her, standing to the side but still to her back. Augustus often spoke to people like this because he didn't feel the need to face others in trivial matters. Elliana's attention had returned to the crowd, but Augustus prodded for more of her attention.

❝ TALYA VASS( ᴇʟᴅᴇsᴛ ʜᴀʟʟᴏᴡ ᴘʀɪɴᴄᴇss ) ( ᴛᴀɢs; ophi, micah, charlie, jackson )
---- Talya felt marginally bad when her attention deflected automatically from Maris and Neve to her younger sister. With a tap on her shoulder, Ophi had captured every thought. Barely managing to contain a squeal of delight, Talya took Opheli’s hands in her own and squeezed them. “Oh, you look absolutely beautiful!” she cried. “Belle of the ball, for sure! How many boys have you danced with?” Talya wanted nothing short of a second by second recount of the time Ophi had spent away from—but alas, that was too much, and she would make do with a few questions.
----“Have you seen Heather yet? I’m sure she’d love to see you.”
----Talya could spend ten thousand years doing everything she could just so see her sister’s smile.
----Her attention was snatched by the flutter of a blue dress and the sudden movement of dark hair away. Diego and Neve. He had, of all things, kissed her, and then left her standing in shock in the middle of the dance floor. I would be a mess, Talya thought offhandedly. A kiss and run?
----Then all had to compose themselves for a proper curtsy for the queen and king. Talya had no qualms showing her respect for these two—their relationship with her own kingdom kept Hallow fed, and that’s all that would matter. When Micah stepped up onto the throne, Talya would begin the ugly dance of groveling and saving face.
----Anything for Hallow. Absolutely anything.
----But until then, she would do anything to keep the man who asked her sister for a dance away. “You’re so kind, Prince Micah,” she said with a charming, snakelike smile. “You look very handsome.” He wants something from her. Vipers don't chase autumn leaves.
----From the corner of her eye, Talya could see with razor like clarity Qahir, quiet and assuming, speaking to Heather. I found her, she thought. She could see Neve making her way to her sister, tears like snowflakes in her eyes. She could see couples spinning across the floor in ball gowns, glittering like raindrops half frozen in late autumn.
----She could see Prince Charlie’s determined face and… Prince Jackson right behind him, with eyes for her sister. Talya swallowed her emotions, all of which were too jumbled for her to identify, and waved slightly to catch their attention. “Hello, Princes,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see the two of you.”
----Suddenly, Talya wanted nothing more than to take Ophi and go home, to fly through the trees as a tiny bird, free and light. She wanted to see her best friend desperately.
----Oh, Talya pined. Where is Elli?

┗━━━━━━━━━━┛ julianna's attention from the prince in front of her was taken away when the king and queen had made their entrance into the room. the blaring music had lowered and everyone moved their heads up to look at them. these were the people who had taken her kingdom away from her. the very people who decided that ruling over one kingdom just wasn't enough. they took her childhood home.
her land.
swiftly getting out of her seat, she rehearsed a motion she was far to familiar with. tilting her head down ever so slightly, swooping one leg in front of the other gracefully, and grabbing the corners of her dress. slowly, she bent her knees and lowered her body, careful to make sure her upper body stayed stationary. her delicate hands lifted the corners of her dress outwards. rising back up, she let the dress fall back down, and smiled at the king and queen. being forced to curtsy to the enemy...that'll never happen again. the music resumed once again, and everyone resumed with whatever they were doing. she sat back down in her seat and smoothed out the red satin dress.
audric had responded by now to her earlier questions. she giggled and covered her mouth as he told her what he really thought about the selection. "don't worry...between you and me, i think it's utter crap as well." julianna bit her bottom lip, a habit she had gotten into whenever she cursed (even though crap was barely a swear word).
the young prince diego, who had moments ago just very publicly kissed the younger ice princess, seemed to be making his way over to her. based on his expression, he was forcing himself to act happy. as the gentleman he was raised to be, he politely asked her how she was. "i'm doing swell." julianna responded, mimicking his smile when he complimented her. "thank you, you don't look too bad yourself." julianna laughed slightly. oh god, how badly she wanted to throw up. all of this mess was exhausting for her, and now that the king and queen were in the room, she had to act on her best behavior. once again, she swooped a piece of her hair behind her ear. that stubborn piece just had to escape from her slick back ponytail. nothing could ever be perfect for her. the seventeen year old was caught up in her thoughts when she was suddenly ripped out of it by diego's next words and actions. his hand extended towards her and an order to dance with him. followed up with a threat towards her dreams. oh. heck. no. she did not need him poking around in her one happy place where there was no one to worry about. that was the last thing she needed for this stay. were all these shield boys raised to be arrogant, egotistical, rude, boastful, moody, erratic maniacs? she lowered her eyes to focus on his extended hand. what a joke! this would happen to her. of all the princesses in this room (7 to be exact), this brat had to walk up to her. was it her red hair? did that make her stand out? and the audacity of him to ask if the rumors about her were true. she hardly considered falling in love a rumor, especially when diego had a much juicer one. a bastard child? 10x more interesting, automatically. she flicked her auburn colored eyes to meet his.
if looks could kill, he'd drop dead on the spot.
fortunately, she wasn't given the chance of committing treason (which she seriously considered), before audric had swooped up and taken ahold of her hand. lies slipped through his teeth towards his brother, as julianna's hand heated up the angrier she got at the whole diego confrontation. no such thing had happened, but what diego didn't know, the better. as audric whisked her out onto the dance floor, she threw her head back and gave a small taunting wink towards diego, before looking back at the taller man. alright, i take it back. not all of the shield boys are so bad. she couldn't help but notice at the glares the two were receiving. was this because of the prince's status? she could only imagine what his parents were thinking of her right now. she let out a small breath as audric put his hand on her waist. no going back now. julianna slowly moved her eyes from his hand all the way up to his own eyes. "now why would i walk away? you asked me to dance after all, remember?" julianna teased slightly. let the people stare. despite all of the rumors circulating around, murderer or not, one dance wouldn't ruin her reputation. besides, she needed at least one friend. the girl moved her small hand and placed it on his shoulder slowly, subconsciously dusting off something on his shoulder, before she took a step back and began to dance the waltz with him. she mentally counted in her head the steps, but that was not about to save her. the girl had two left feet when it came to dancing, which was ironic, because a princess should be able to dance. over the course of seconds she managed to step on audric's feet, murmur apologies, and burst out into laughter. "oh god. im a mess." blood rushed to her cheeks, matching the color of her hair, as she scrunched up her nose in embarrassment. "any reason why you wanted to save me from your brother diego? letting me dance with him, would have saved you-" oh shoot, don't step on that foot again julianna! you suck as a princess. "from a lot of foot injuries."

xoxophi felt floods of warmth overcoming her, and couldn't help but smiled as she gazed upon her sister, her eyes glittering like diamonds. happiness had been stored in each and every crevice in her small body, so much that she felt as if she might explode, her heart feeling content and whole. at her sister's comment, the younger princess had blushed, her cheeks flushing almost automatically as she laughed under her breath, absentmindedly playing with a long strand of brown hair that fell across her chest. "i have to say the same for you sister.. you look absolutely stunning!" she truly had meant it. talya looked as jaw-dropping as the queen herself, her sharp cheekbones and pointed gaze sure to send men and women alike dragging at her heels. ophi, on the contrary, had always looked slightly younger, embodying a petite frame with a more gentle facial structure, still holding the powerful gaze beneath her hazel eyes. that was something the two had shared- determination, and the will to do anything they could for anything they needed. "i haven't seen heather.. i'm sure she's around here somewhere, she must be.." her curiosity had gotten the best of her, and ophi stood on her toes, searching over the crowd in case she could recognize the princess. however, before she knew it, her attention had once again drifted towards her sister. that is, before she saw him.
xoxophelia vass could recognize jackson shields from a mile away. he was like a greek god, the way his stance was always poised, his eyes shining with life. memories had seemed to crash against the girl's frame suddenly, and she stumbled, feeling faint and paper-thin, as if she could be whisked away by the wind. the ground seemed to be magnetizing her towards it, but she kept her legs still, realizing she had stopped breathing. there he was. for years, ophi had waited for jackson to once return to her, longed to grasp his fingertips once again, to feel the electricity that ran through her veins when she was with him. he had proposed to her, and she had loved him with all her heart. but now, her heart sank into her stomach, a lump forming in her throat as she stared at the boy in front of her. he was so beautiful, she thought, so perfect in every way. but he had left her without a trace, and that had caused her to feel broken, torn, destroyed. the ring that rested upon her finger seemed to burn her slightly, reminding her that it had remained there for years. carefully, she lifted her hand forwards, examining it. the blade of grass was beautiful in her opinion, so simple, yet so prepossessing to her that it made her shudder. it held thousands of memories and laughter shared, but it hurt her now, and hurt her more than it ever would. tears glittered in opheli's gaze momentarily, as she barely whispered the words. "jackson.." before she could say anything else, the prince had turned around quickly to face charlie, and ophi noticed how worried he had looked, his skin paler, as if a white sheet had been thrown over him. the hallow princess had then noticed charlie beside him, recognizing him almost immediately. she had known that he and jacks had always been close, closer than anyone she had ever known. mimicking jackson's movements, the girl turned towards her sister, face panic-stricken.
xoxwhat would she say to him? what could you say to someone who you hadn't seen for years, and the last thing they'd done was propose to you? inhaling sharply, ophi opened her mouth to speak to talya, fighting back tears that seemed to be inclined to falling onto her cheek, but was cut short as she noticed micah had joined them as well. opheli felt her heart cascading through her chest, but forced a smile upon her lips, masking her emotions almost entirely. it was as if the whole scene hadn't happened, her face wiped clean of any traces of worry. but, inside, the younger girl felt as if she might explode, her body tense, head spinning suddenly. oh, how the girl wished she could lie down at that very moment. noticing micah's comment, she laughed lightly, but her eyes darted toward's jackson once again, flickering with hope. "it's alright.. we all get a little uneasy sometimes." she smiled softly, her eyes resting upon micah's once again. he and jackson shared similar qualities, what with being brothers and all. but their personalities were so different, so contrasting and clashing that it made ophi dizzy just contemplating it.
xoxmicah had then turned to gaze elsewhere, and ophi followed. upon the great doors resided the king and queen, both looking superior to everyone in the room. they both smiled and waved, but ophi could see that they held much more emotion than they had dhosen to show. the thought made her heart ache, and she longed to see her mother and father again. but, her real mother was never allowed near her father again, and ophi had been banished from seeing the maid. the girl had curtsied when the couple had walked by, smiling gently before standing once again. the action had meant nothing, and she always knew it would mean nothing, but it was a form of politeness. it was only then that ophi noticed the small glass in micah's hand, the smell of alcohol wafting towards her nose. opheli had never been particularly attracted to it, and she was underage, so she had never tried it in the first place. just the scent had repulsed her enough already, but she remained stoic, watching as micah quickly finished the glass. he had then asked her for a dance, and ophi opened her mouth to respond, but was interrupted by her sister. talya had started to stall, her voice sly and cat-like, something that ophi had never quite learned to do. the younger princess thanked her silently in her head, but knew that she wouldn't be able to keep it up for long. micah had not asked to dance for the fun of it, ophi had known that for sure. he wanted something from her, whether it be the title of being king or secrets to her kingdom, the girl could not tell. but once talya had been unable to talk any longer, ophi nodded softly in her direction, her eyes flashing with gratitude, before she turned towards micah once again. "yes, my lord... but not for too long. my feet have been aching, and i do not wish to hold you back from dancing with the other princesses."
xoxand so, ophi slipped her hand into his, and began to dance, closing her eyes gently as the sound of music fueled each of her steps. the younger princess had taken classes when she was younger, but they had not been very successful, for she was not the best dancer. however, she managed to remain opposite of him, miming his footsteps, smiling gently in his direction. her gaze was still frozen to jackson, however, and she longed to dance with him, more than anything in the world. but how could she, when she felt as if she had been left behind by him? each time they had gotten close to him, she could feel her heart pumping faster, head pounding with grief, struggling to keep her gaze locked on micah's. she was tense, anxious, her body stiff in his grasp, but still smiled, her eyes flickering with fear. what was going on with her?
