Caroline took the menu, and flipped through the pages consciously. "Quite a few, since... Yeah... We always worked together with a lot of activities. You may be surprised, but I was actually always more popular with the boys than the girls. It was just always easier for me to befriend them than it was with the girls. They were always just so friendly, no matter the situation." She silently read all of the word. The descriptions made everything sound better than they looked, and she wanted to try everything, but she knew she could only get one thing. "How did you pull a muscle?" Caroline asked, really wanting to know. And she was wanting to start more conversation. She was about to start through the desert menu again, until she saw the most delectable food she had seen in there. "I want the Pumpkin Pie," Caroline said, delight sparkling in her eyes.

((Ugh so sorry - I could have sworn I posted this earlier!))

HAWKE

Hawke paused. "I pulled it when I tried to pick up something that was too heavy for me... hehe, I guess I'm no match for a fallen tree. It was on an old lady's car... you know, trees are heavier than they look?"
A waiter, as if summoned by the words "pie" came into view. "Pumpkin pie? Excellent choice, my dear!" And then promptly vanished. Hawke chuckled. "That was.... weird. But, pumpkin pie does sound good. I haven't had any of that since..... thanksgiving. Heh... not many people celebrate that anymore, you know? Did you know it's actually illegal? The Goldhawks don't like us to think of ourselves as American anymore."

Caroline looked at him, eyebrows squished toward the middle of her head. Her head cocked, and she looked at him with a poker face. "Thanksgiving...? What is that?" Caroline watched the waiter walk back with a tray in his hand. He set down their deserts right in front of them, and Caroline went bug-eyed when she saw the piece of pie. It looked delicious, and it was huge. She grabbed her fork, about to take a bite, but waited until Hawke ate a bit of his.

HAWKE

Hawke shook his head. "Nevermind. We probably shouldn't be talking about it... here... anyway." Hawke took up a forkful of the pie, bringing it near his pale lips, the scent slowly wafting up to his nose, almost teasing his senses. "This color is familiar... like.. fall, isn't it?" He said slowly, observing the piece of pie on his fork. The color reminded him of fall. Not the modern fall which was marked by minimal leaf litter, and decaying leaves in mud puddles, and chilly breezes; the fall of history, where the horizon was turned to fire. "The fall from picture books," he corrected himself, then took a bite. He was about to say something else but thought was swept away in the delightful, yet somehow nostalgic taste of pumpkin pie. "Mmmm.... try it!"

Caroline happily dove right into the pumpkin pie. She inhaled deaply in delight, and took another bite. "This IS delicious! I am so glad we got this! We should get some to take home! Better yet, we should get a lifetime supply!" Caroline took one more bite, but stopped to let Hawke have some more. She didn't want to hog the food!

HAWKE

Hawke nodded. "Yeah, that sounds great! You know I think they must use some sort of secret ingredient. Possibly unicorn tears.." Hawke took another couple bites. They would probably be packing immediately after going home. They would have to move out within the day, but that really wouldn't be hard. There wasn't much in the house. However, the destination once they moved out was unsure. There were two possibilities. One was that things wouldn't work out like he had hoped (which was the most logical option) and he would have to move to another temporary house, in which the owner was unaware of his existence. The other option, which was much more of a longshot was that a cheap apartment would make an exception for him, and they would get to move into a place that was legally his. Of course that would be much better, but he didn't even bother telling Caroline that he had applied to get the apartment because it was so unlikely. Just then, his phone in his pocket sprang to life, ringing. Ring, ring, riiing. Hawke gave Caroline a confused look, and then answered his phone. "Hello?" There was a pause on the other end and then a woman's voice. "Hello... Is this Hawke Seika? This is Gale Malkin, from the Clearwater Brook apartments." Seika was the last-minute surname Hawke had given himself. His surprise was plainly displayed on his face. "Y-yes... that's me..." Hawke said slowly, almost not believing that they had called. He was sure she was calling simply to say he didn't meet standards. After all, they must be crazy to rent an apartment to him. No real credit to speak of, shady history, and odd jobs while being currently unemployed. It was almost impossible. "Alright.. so everything checks out, and if you would like the apartment, it's yours. Would you like to go through on the transaction? Also you would have to notify the water company. Electric, as advertised is already on and always paid for by the apartment." Hawke figured the surprise on his face must have made Caroline curious, but he was too shocked to tell her anything. There was a pause. "Hello...?" "Oh, oh, yes, sorry. Yes I would like to go through with that. Thank you. Um.. so when is it available?""Great. You can pay online over a secured network, and once it's paid for just come by to pick up the keys and it's yours. So can I expect to see you today?" "Yes.""Great! See you soon. Bye.." the phone made a beep as Gale hung up. Hawke looked at Caroline. "Guess who that was."

Caroline looked at him, confused. What was the look on his face about? Who was he talking to? And why did he seemed so startled? She thewn got lost in thought about his cell phone. She had never had a cell phone, and she wondered how they worked. Being in a concentration camp her whole life, she never really had anything except clothes, and things supplied by them, of course. Hawke suddenly clicked the phone shut, and Caroline snapped back into reality. "Hmm? Oh, um, who was it? I am not a very good guesser, so..."

HAWKE

Hawke chuckled, seeing her fascination with his cell phone. It was a cheap, primitive one compared to others, but was still it's own tiny marvel. He tossed it to her over the table, for her to inspect at her own leisure. "The call, dear Caroline, was from a lady by the name of Gale Malkin. She works at Clearwater Brook Apartments... she just told me that I'm approved for renting an apartment!! We're gonna have an apartment!" Hawke playfully kicked her under the table.

Caroline successfully caught the phone, and opened it up. She pressed buttons, but gently and slowly so she wouldn't break it. Her eyes brightened when he said they were getting the apartment. "That is awesome! I am so glad you got it! When are we going to move in?" Caroline tried to make sure that she made it clear that she knew it was his, and she was just... staying there... She just didn't want him to think that she thought it was permenent. She hated to be in people's way like that. Caroline just wanted to be a help, and get out as fast as she could, for his benefit.

HAWKE

Hawke beamed at her enthusiasm, and slowly realized that he had never, not once in his life, actually beamed. He had never smiled as widely or as sincerely, either, and realized he was probably growing a little too attached to his new roommate. That's really... all she was, a roommate. He told himself that he should keep that in mind. The smile gradually slid off his face, and he looked back to his normal state of apathy. "Hopefully today. You'll have to help me pack once we get back... don't worry though, I don't have too much."
