Julia was curious about this kid, and despite her straight-faced outward appearance, it's true that she was slightly interested into who he was. He was new - almost everyone knew the layout of the high school, but she could understand how hard it might be if you weren't from here. It was more like a maze if anything, except it didn't always change like the Labyrinth. His words were almost enough to get a smile from her lips. Almost. Her face remained straight as she let her hands fall to rest on her hips. When he noticed the book she was reading, he pointed it out and her eyes returned to the cover. Of course, she knew the book inside and out, but she wouldn't be able to tell him that. Maybe he might not join in with some of the preppies teasing. 'Freak', 'Sociopath' and other such derrogitory terms were often used against her, but over the years she had slowly grown to be incredibly apathic towards such comments, and that was probably why she seemed so guarded at the moment. Truly, she wasn't being mean, or at least she wasn't trying to seem unemotional. It was just that she had done so for so long when meeting new people, it became more and more like a bad habit.

"Athens. Julia Athens." she said simply, figuring he would give his name to her whether she asked for him to give it or not. Sighing slightly, she had looked to the so called 'useless' piece of paper earlier and memorized the poorly written directions on there. Did secretaries want the new students to get confused and lost on their first day of school? They must, otherwise they would have given him better directions. "We're going to the same place, follow me." As she did so, she began walking away from him, a bit slowly at first so he could catch up, but she picked up the pace a bit once he did so. "I'm not surprised you got lost. The school secretaries gave you horrible directions. You probably did a loop trying to get through the hallway in the science wing. They don't realize there's a quicker way around. Not like they ever go anywhere besides the front office..." she muttered, shaking her head slightly before looking back to him. Clearing her throat a bit, she decided that he was probably okay to talk to - at least for now, before he was corrupted by any popular girls who might find him cute. "As for the Silmarillion, you have to read it enough times before you can actually understand it." Or have a photographic memory. She left that part out. When leading him around a corner, they came across a group of the more 'popular kids' and Julia held back the urge to roll her eyes. They were giggling as looking their way, and she picked up the pace a bit.

'Hey Sociopath! You don't want to be late for class - might blemish your perfect record!' one called out as they passed by them, and the rest of their little clique laughed and snickered, high-giving each other as Julia clenched her fists and sped up even more. "Ignore them; they couldn't tell the difference between an english essay and a mathematic equation." she muttered, a slight growl to her voice as they approached the classroom. "They also smell fear, so careful."

The boy nodded slowly and zoned out for a couple seconds when a flop of hair would not, for the life of it, stay out of his eye. After pushing it back into place more then once, he finally got it where it needed to be and forced himself to pay attention. What was I doing again? He looked up and noticed that the girl he'd just met and neglected to pay attention to had been talking to him. Of all the times to zone out. She probably told me her name and I wasn't paying attention. There was a small sigh of annoyance that escaped his lips when she turned around, muttering for him to follow her. He gladly did so and hopped into step next to her, his mind going off on himself again. I'm pretty sure she said something like Juliet. Or maybe it was July. Julia? That sounds right... His arms were extended far behind his neck as he let her words wash over him.

The walk through the halls was uneventful enough for a high school and he laughed appropriately when she made a comment on the secretaries. Other then listening, Xander felt himself watching her and trying to read her emotions. However, all he could read was an apathetic face. Oh God, am I doing something wrong here? Maybe I'm too quiet. Which is weird... for me. But Torresi didn't say anything since the girl seemed content to talk for the both of them. He took note of the answer she gave him about the Silmarrillion and furthermore decided that he'd have it down within one read. It's just the kind of person he was. Information stuck to his brain like glue and he barely ever had to reread something to understand it. Hell, he'd finished Ulysses without hardly a trouble in the world. A smile played on his lips when he remembered trying to get Shaun to read the book. Barely an hour later, Xander recieved a very ticked off phone call from his best mate asking him whether or not the book was Xander's idea of a clever joke. Shaun had apparently burned the book not long after that and Xander was forced to pay a steep library fee. 'You're too smart for your own good, you know that? That brain of yours is going to get you into trouble one of these days.'That's what Shaun would always say.

His mind snapped back into the present like a sorry case of whiplash when from the side he heard the unpleasant drone of wannabe celebrities. Their comments however seemed to be directed at none other then the girl beside him. He snuck a look at her and saw her clenching her fists, noticing the small increase in speed. And he had opened his mouth to say something when she beat him to it. With a carefree grin he shoved his hands into pockets, "Well, they won't be smelling any fear on this guy any time soon. I'm pretty sure either one of us could climb up their ego and jump down to their IQ. However, the sheer distance between the two would probably kill us so it's probably best if we just give them a good riddle to keep 'em preoccupied for a while." Their voices soon faded into nothing more then an obnoxious blur as they distanced themselves from the social hierarchy and stepped into the classroom. His lopsided grin turned into a small blank stare as he looked around at the peers he'd be stuck in class with. A lot of them seemed to know each other already and he was reminded of just how isolated he was from the rest of this school. After all, the place he'd come from had about only 800 students, k-12, and his small group of friends made up about half of his grade.

So he ran a hand through his hair and let it rest on the back of his neck, rubbing it awkwardly. Everything about him seemed to seem very awkward all of a sudden. From the way he stood to the fact that he was literally starting to shake just a tad. With a deep breath, he shook out the nerves, forced that stupid smile back onto his face, and turned to look at Julia, "Well, this should be fun. So, I'm fairly certain that you've got better people to go hang out with than this socially useless heap of wet towel, so I'm gonna go find a seat somewhere. Oh, I'm Alexander by the way. But - everybody just called me Xander at my old school. Don't know why. But they did, and it stuck. I mean, you don't have to call me Xander if you don't want to. I guess you could go with Alex. The world is full of possibilities. Think of me like a blank canva... And I'm rambling. Wow... Sorry. Going now." He looked around the room and took note of some promising seats before shoving his hands back into his jean pockets and aiming for the desk in the front , both desks next to him empty. It didn't take long for the foster kid to bring out the pen in his pocket, spinning it around in his fingers as a nervous habit. The pen spinning was certainly a universal constant when everything else failed him. He was thankful for that, at least.

"Oh cool, where did you move from?" He asked, absent-mindedly as he moved forward to begin fiddling
with her locker. She hadn't given him the number code to the dial... but he knew how to open a locker
without one anyway. You just had to listen closely. Focusing on the little dial, he listened to the ticks it
made each time he passed over a certain number. Then he would dial it backwards a couple of rounds and
try again. It took a him a few tries, but he popped it open and turned to give her a big grin. "There ya go,
I suggest learning the code to it maybe... or you're gonna need help again,"
he laughed. The code was in
his head however and he figured he would be able to help her again if she needed it, seeing how he was
only two lockers down from her. He hadn't paid attention to her answer, if she had answered his question
from when he was trying to crack the code, so he was about to ask again, when she took off. Shrugging,
he watched her leave, he had to say... wherever she was from, they had some cute girls. He smirked
and turned to give his locker some attention when he heard his name. Turning, his mind erased all
thoughts about the odd foreign girl and his locker. He gave his good friend, Jordan, a huge smile and
walked over to join her and what looked like a new guy.
"Hey Jordy," he called as he neared the two, standing tall next to her and looking the new guy up
and down. "Hey... guy I've never seen before," he greeted. "Yep, that's my job," he answered her,
"Doddling." He absent-mindedly became distracted by some of the popular girls and other groups
that were passing them, watching the number in the hallways dwindle. He was near his next class,
so being late wasn't concern... then again, when was it ever? But he was pretty sure it would be a
concern for that new guy that Jordan was keeping around.
He was about to mention the time when the bell rang, interrupting his words. He smirked when Jordan
mentioned they should get moving, "Yeah... because trouble is my job, I'm the only one
who can doddle and be late,"
he teased, nudging her as they headed into the classroom. New and
familiar faces greeted him all at once. Most he recognized, others he didn't. He did recognize the
girl he had just helped with her locker... and Dane. He also recognized Pheonix and his old buddies
from last year that he and Jordan got in plenty of trouble with last year. He smiled, finding some seats
near two of those buddies and nudged Jordan again. "Found us some seats," he pointed out, moving
towards them and high fiving a friend.

Joey ➜ three

The sound of a voice coming from beside her caused Joey to jump half way out of her skin. Usually she was rather hard to scare. That was unless, mom course, she was too focused on something or everything else other than her surroundings. At the moment, not only was her attention situated on the new boy before her, but it was also and mainly situated on his eyes and the abnormal color they held as well as the girl who had walked off with yet another oddity. It was a strange mystery that had her mind rapt in the very idea, trying as many things as she possibly could to figure out how to place it in an experience she had had before. But try as she might, she could not come up with anything. All for a quiet nagging feeling she had in the back of her mind that she would never have noticed if she wasn't looking for it. The mysteries were causing her to zone out so much so that she hadn't even realized her best friend strolling up beside her.

"Jordy?" she said with a slight distasteful look as she glanced up at him. "That's a new one." her voice was leveled as she turned away and gave it a shrug at the thought of the nickname. Not often did she hear her actual name or okay many nicknames relating to it besides 'Joey' and 'Jo' and it was likely because she had become so used to hearing those two nicknames that it was almost unnatural for her to be called anything but. The only exceptions she really made without getting too mad were her siblings who could care less what she preferred and her close friends whom she felt she needed to give a right to do something that she didn't often let anyone else do around her. She shrugged once more, almost in an odd acceptance of the name and looked back up at Trevor and followed his gaze to Dallas as he said an odd hello to him. She elbowed her friend and gave a playful glare. "Don't be so rude. This is Dallas. Dallas, this is my idiot of a friend, Trevor."

Joey looked back up at her friend as he continued to speak in reply to what she had called out to him before, but noticed his halfheartedness in the reply. She followed his gaze once again to a group of girls, sent a slight glare their way and then rolled her eyes at her friend's behavior and elbowed him yet again to alert his attention back to the conversation. She wasn't sure if he was actually looking at the group of girls, or noticing the dwindling number of people, but either way he was distracting himself impolitely. "Hey, if you're busy gawking, we can leave you be." she said in a teasing manner. As he reentered the conversation and continued his response; Joey looked at him and laughed, but rubbed her arm after he nudged her. "You're not the only one, punk. But I guess I can say that you're the reason I get into trouble more times than I can count. Though I can't say I blame you... this school is pretty lame." She said looking around and the dullness of everything. It wasn't just the scenery, but the people and their zombie like attitudes toward everything around them. Everyone seemed to drift aimlessly from class to class with no purpose but to hear the lectures from the teachers. It was rather sad if one were to actually think about it.

Noticing she had a frown on her face, Joey wiped it off quickly and replaced it with a refreshing smile and looked back up at Dallas. His fascinating green eyes reminded her to wake up and head to class. She walked calmly the rest of the way to the classroom, which was saying a lot for her since she was rarely quiet or patient; even on her way down the hall. As she stepped in, she nearly stopped in her tracks. Having a couple of new kids around school wasn't uncommon as a new set of freshmen came through ever year. But seeing that many new faces in one class was one of the strangest things yet. They weren't exactly a small town, but even still. Looking around at the many faces, Joey tried to memorize them for later in case she ever got the chance to speak to or run into any of them. Glancing at the girl with the oddity in her eyes, Joey remembered her from the run in not five minutes ago. She made a mental note of speaking to her later. "Looks like you're not the only new kid on the block." She said in a low voice toward Dallas after giving him a slight nudge. She glanced around at the rest of them, recognizing quite a few like Dane who she hardly had spoken to, but she seemed rather nice. Then there was Xander and Julia. While Xander was a neat kid and Joey liked to hang out with him sometimes, Julia tended to get on her nerves. She wasn't entirely certain if it was intentional or not, but either way Joey couldn't seem to stand her.

She looked around at the rest of the class, sneering at a few and laughing in a joking manner, and cautiously steering away from others. There were a quite a few kids she hadn't gotten along with the year before, but yet again that wasn't saying much as she and Trevor tended to get into trouble with a bunch of people. She herself didn't often play well with others. Hearing Trevor call out letting them know he found a couple open seats, she scurried over to take one, feeling relieved she could take her bag over her head, off of her shoulder, was a huge relief. Enough so that she let out a quiet relaxed and annoyed sigh as she slumped down in her chair, waiting for the second bell to ring to begin the class. "Hey Dallas." She waved at the kid she had ran into in the hallway and signaled him over. "You should come sit over here." She said, patting the desk beside her and slumped back in her chair as if she didn't care whether he actually came or not. Waiting rather impatiently, she watched the blackboard absent-minded and listened to Trevor speaking to his buddies. She sat bolt upright when she realized something and began slapping Trevor's leg in a fast patting kind of way to get his attention. "This feels so unnatural..." Her eyes were as wide as saucers as she looked up at him. "I think this is the first time i've actually been early to class in at least... four years."

Yet again she slumped back in her chair as if the rest of the world didn't exist around her, but got bored ten seconds later and decided she needed to do something or her mind would burst. Unable to sit still, she would either tap her foot, fiddle with her hands or something on the desk, and every once in a while; she would re-position herself in her chair. "I hate this." she mumbled to herself, unable to imagine sitting still for the next couple hours until lunch where she could run around all the heck she wanted outside. "Hey Tre, how's your head?" She asked Trevor halfheartedly, remembering the fall he took a week or two before. She often bugged him about it every day since then, but that day she was feeling particularly numb to the idea of bothering anyone. Her mind just continued to wander back to all the odd things she had seen that day and she began to feel like she was going to burst if she couldn't speak to anyone about it.

At his joke pertaining to the celebrity wannabes, Julia couldn't keep the smallest hint of a smile from forming over her lips, and she looked down and away, being able to hold back a laugh. "Yes, it does appear to seem that way." was all she managed to say. Why was it so easily cracked, that wall that she had built up around herself? It was the first day of school, and already she's shown more emotion to a complete stranger than she has to anyone (except maybe her mother) the entire summer! Of course, Julia spent most of her summer in her room, in the forest, or at the library, so she could have as little human contact as possible. Looking back to the 'new kid', she silently wondered what his story was. He didn't seem to shy away from her, so maybe... Maybe she would be able to talk to him more. She knew in the back of her mind somewhere, that friends were an essential part of 'having a life', but her apathetic happenstance just seemed to get in the way of everything, and she no longer knew whether or not to be grateful for that fact.

When they were in the classroom and the new kid started to talking again, the gray haired girl blinked a few times in mild surprise at his constant mutterings. She? Having better people to hang out with? That was new. He really wasn't from around here (not like she didn't know that, but his phraseology and words only further confirmed the facts). As he rambled on, she rose a delicate eyebrow. So his name was Alexander? She heard and processed his nicknames, but she'd probably just stick to the full thing. It was easier that way, since she never particularly liked nicknames. She's been called everything from Jules, to Juliet, Spanish jokes like José and everything in between - she didn't enjoy nicknames. It wasn't long before his speech seemed to be slowing down, but Julia silently wondered where all this sudden energy came from. Maybe this was how he really was? She wouldn't be surprised. He was just a bit lost this morning, so he was silent while listening to her directions. When Alexander finished and said he was going, Julia opened her mouth to call after him, but closed it just as quickly. Why should he care what or who she hung out with? And... why should she feel like he should? Those questions confused her. The bookworm mentally shook her head as one depressing thought floated through it. "I don't exactly... have any friends." that singular thought floated through her mind as she stood there awkwardly. Looks like another chance to be normal has passed her by her again! Sighing and moving over to one of the last clusters in the back, Julia took a seat all by herself in the very back row, as far away from everyone else as possible. Having nothing better to do at the moment, she went back to doing what she always seemed to be doing - reading her books.

The Silmarillion was good company, after all. It didn't complain to her about who liked who or what shop had the cutest clothes, or anything superficial like that. No, it was so much more important than that or any other shallow conversation she could ever have! Who needs friends when you have books? Julia has been trying to tell herself that for years. It was alright, though. A book was a place - an entire world where she could slip away and into and pretend to be someone else. To be someone whom she was not. It was easy to put herself in the protagonists shoes, and just pretend to have her own adventure. Maybe she was the protagonist in a story after - the one about a lonely girl and her books. To be fair to anyone else though, it wasn't as though Julia went out of her way to try and make friends. Quite the contrary, which was why she didn't exactly expect anything from them in return. She was okay with that, because after all, who would want to be friends with a sociopath? "My life is fine the way it is."

ALEXANDER
✣ xander | male | nerd | seventeen | crush: --- | tagged; class ✣
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

With the pencil twirling through his fingers, he tried sitting still for as long as possible. The problem with being him though was the simple fact that someting like that was absolutely impossible. He began tapping his free hand on the table until the kid let out a strained groan. "When is this stupid class gonna start?" he muttered under his breath and let out a breathy sigh. With nothing better to do, he leaned far back on his chair an propped his legs up on the surface of his desk. There was nothing or noone to stop him from doing so. So, in a more carefree mannerism, he finally let his eyes wander around the classroom. It seemed that Julia had taken to a seat in the back by herself. This discovery had him inwardly cursing at himself as he realized that maybe she didn't actually have anybody better to hang out with. Would it be socially awkward to move my desk now? Toressi rolled his eyes and continued glancing around at all the other faces in the class.

It almost seemed like everybody moved around in some giant cliche which was absolutely a thrilling revelation to him. He just loved having to break his back to wedge himself into a group of people that he hardly belonged with. Sarcasm aside, he began to take note of a group of three behind him. Upon first glance they seemed to be friends and he was able to catch their names. Trevor, Dallas, and - Jordy? - That was probably a nickname. From their conversation, he could tell that these three, or at least the the two who seemed uber buddy buddy with each other were apparent troublemakers. Whether that named them desirable to hang out with was yet to be decided.

The Trevor kid reminded him all too much of Shaun for it to be even the slightest bit legal however. From the confident face and way of speaking to the fact that he seemed like sort of a dolt. And this fact only made Xander groan in resentment that he had to leave his old school behind only to me stuck with such mock imitations of his old life. Hell, even his current foster sister seemed harder to get along with then his older one. And that sis had been a pain til the day he left. With his easygoing expression, he simply rolled his eyes and turned back to his own desk, pencil still spinning through his fingers. Out of his backpack, he pulled out a notebook and began flipping through it when he was sure nobody was looking. There were notes and findings of his search for an answer to his private investigation.

Everybody around him looked so normal and here he was, chasing after some crazy conspiracy that he and Shaun cooked up together before Xander left. There were a couple listings of books that he remembered mentioned the word 'color' at least once. However, whenever he tried looking that word up in a dictionary, nothing ever showed up. "I'm telling you, man. It's the government. I'm sure of it this time." Conversations of days stuck up in Xander's attic with Shaun played back in Xander's head clear as day. It sounded crazy and Toressi never would have bought into it if he hadn't had such a weird feeling in his gut whenever that word was brought up. Even still, he had absolutely no idea what it meant. Just that somewhere and somewhere and somehow, it existed.
