~Serena~
A gentle swirl of wind drifted over the sand, blowing a handful of the microscopic rocks over Serena’s cheek. She was laying sprawled out on her back, one arm resting over her stomach and the other outstretched in the sand, as if reaching for something that wasn’t there. Her breathing shuttered for a moment, the gills on her neck writhing. The extreme heat and dryness of the desert and sand was irritating her gills for Serena was much better off in cooler, or at least wetter climates.
Her lips were dried and cracking, the elegant paleness of her cheek already reddening with sunburn. Little bits of sand settled among her long dark eyelashes and tiny droplets of sweat formed above her eyebrows.
The purple haired girl slowly opened her eyes, immediately squinting from the bright sun. The world seemed to spin around her and she slowly sat up, blinking a few times and taking in her surroundings. The faint form of a boy was visible in the distance and Serena leaned a bit forward, looking towards the hazy image. In that moment, everything came rushing back to her. The dome, her friends, everything. The last thing she remembered was removing Alisa’s baby, and then it all went blank.
Where was she? Was she freed somehow? Serena squinted a bit harder looking to the figure in the distance, and she recognized those adorable bobcat ears atop the boy’s head. “Alex!” she cried out, her heartbeat speeding up as a wide smile spread across her lips. Stumbling to her feet, Serena ran towards the distant shadow, but did not seem to get any closer. She stopped after a minute, leaning over to catch her breath and rub her eyes. They were sore from the sun, and her head was still pounding.
When she looked back up, the figure was gone. Was it just a hallucination? Serena looked all around and cupped her hands around her mouth. “ALEX!” she cried out, hearing nothing in response. She spun around, looking left and right, pushing her hair back and looking again. There was nothing, absolutely nothing. Where was everyone? What happened?
Serena dropped to her knees and clutched her forehead, rubbing her temples. She felt a familiar lump in the bottom of her throat, but she had no tears to cry for she had already begun to dehydrate. “Alex..” she whispered to the sand. Was she released? Why would the scientists just let her go? What about Alex, and all the other hybrids? If she truly had been set free, she would have to go back and save them. Her breathing quickened as the thought crossed her mind, what if the war had begun and she wasn’t ready, so they let her out but sent the others to fight? Her stomach churned at this thought. Now Blake she didn’t give a worry about. Serena was confident he could fight for himself and survive. But Alex, sweet, gentle Alex, he gave in too easily to the scientists. He didn’t seem to have much confidence in himself, and Serena worried he would too easily lose hope during battle.
Serena pressed her palms to her eyelids, trying to keep her eyes from drying out. Alex had been injured when she last left him, so there was no way he could go to war. But..how long ago had that been? Had it been long enough for him to heal? The thought of Alex being thrown into a battlefield with all sorts of fighting..it made Serena want to puke. She clutched her stomach and leaned over, trying to steady her shaky breathing as the world around her spun in circles. Her head continued to throb, more thoughts and worries producing themselves. What of Alisa? Would they make her fight, after she had just lost her baby? More than that, what of the baby? Had it even survived? It didn’t make sense, why would Serena be released when she was the best hybrid doctor the scientists ever had? If anything, wouldn’t they have taken her to war to use her to tend the injured soldiers? Surely her medical skills held value.
Serena took a deep breath, steadying herself and trying to keep calm. She needed to find out what was going on, and more importantly she needed to get to Alex. That poor boy had seemed so miserable before Serena arrived, there was no way she would let him return to that if he was still trapped in the dome. And if they really had gone to war without her, well Serena would show up and bring hell with her to save Alex and the others.
Standing to her feet, Serena licked her lips, trying to wet them. She picked a random direction and her pupils narrowed to her catlike features, her legs rippling as she prepared to run. It would be dangerous to use so much energy into her speed, especially when she had no known sources of water, but at this point she didn’t really care. She knew she was panicking, she didn’t even want to know how Alex probably felt right now. Serena would rather dehydrate than allow Alex to suffer any longer. Who knew how long she had been unconscious? She had to get back to the dome and find out where he was.
And with that, Serena was gone, a cloud of dust and sand blown up into the air from where she once stood as she ran through the desert with her cheetah speed. She was definitely a lot slower than her usual fastest ability, slowed by the sand and strain on her body. “Alex!” she called out, her voice a bit weak as she ran through the desert. As she rounded a sizable hill, she saw a figure in the distance. Reverting to her usual self, Serena made sure her gills were closed up as she jogged towards the person. Even if it wasn’t Alex, perhaps whoever it was could help her figure out what was going on.
