xxxAdelaide was silent for a few moments, her face pensive. She gave Rhianna a salute and a half smile a moment later, confirming her readiness. Nodding in response, she turned and headed forward, unaware of the thoughts of her partner. To Rhianna, betrayal and trickery came as easily as breathing, and since she did not find breathing a moral issue, neither did she her more negative traits. To her, of course, they were not negative, merely there.
xxxHearing the pad of footsteps behind her, Rhianna turned her head to see Adelaide giving her a mischievous smile, amusement in her eyes. "What are we, then? Friends? Sister? Lovers?" She rolled her eyes in response to the jest, giving the girl a playful shove, only to find her just out of reach. Amusement now in her own eyes, Rhianna nevertheless responded seriously. "I would advise against the last two, given both would be a bit extraordinary. We want to appear as extraordinary as possible, and claiming either would cause heads to turn. Unlikely friends would be best, we can say we escaped the lab together."
xxxA thought suddenly occurred to her, and she held up a hand to Adelaide in a gesture to wait, and pulled out her phone. Dialing Rick, she waited briefly for him to pick up, and then began to speak. "Rick? Yeah, it's me, you're favorite freak." She studied her nails as she spoke, holding the phone to her ear with one shoulder. "Anyway, we found the others you spoke about, and we're not sure how many there are. It might take a few days or even a week to ensure they trust us enough to get one alone, so don't expect myself are Adelaide back for a little while. I know the rest of the squad will be just heartbroken I won't be there for a while. Make sure they don't throw any parties or anything." She paused, listening as the scientist spoke, a scowl darkening her features, and frost forming on the tips of the grass around her. "Yeah, yeah, whatever." Another pause. "Yes, sir."
xxxHanging up, Rhianna held the phone in her hand, glancing at it briefly. Frost covered its surface, and the screen soon cracked, its inner workings solid ice. Throwing the now useless phone on the ground, she exhaled, collecting herself. "Apparently I need to, in Ricky's works, 'curb my attitude'. Can you believe the self-serving prick? Anyway though, we better get going."
xxxWhomever had set the warning signal in the earth already knew they were coming, so they might as well fulfill their expectations. Heck, if they only sent out one scout she and Adelaide could down them and be out of here before anyone was the wiser. Putting her argument with Rick out of her mind, Rhianna refocused on the task. She had never gotten along with the man anyway, and planned to ditch the scientists and their whole scheme as soon as it was probable to do so. Not out of any feelings of compassion for those they captured, but out of a simple desire to be free, and calling her own shots. Rhianna shot a sideways glance at Adelaide, wondering if she felt the same way.
xxxTheir walking soon gave way to a sort of clearing, and Rhianna spotted a series of stone huts up ahead, looking to have sprung from the very ground itself, from appearance as well as the traces of magic she could sense around them. Changing her expression from annoyance to anxiousness, Rhianna took a few deep breathes and rapid exhales to make herself sound breathless, knowing Adelaide would do something similar. Rhianna thought herself good at deception, but in reality Adelaide was the best - she could probably make someone believe a stone was a piece of bread, if she really tried. Stepping out into the open, Rhianna made herself seem hesitant in approaching, looking around for signs of danger, or other people.
