Lex grunted from the impact and smiled. He then ushered her to a table near the window and pulled out a chair for her. He pulled a few sugar cubes from a jar and put one in his mouth, letting the crystals dissolve over his tongue before deciding to talk. He was still a bit drowsy. Lex let his bright amber eyes pierce the grey-blue ones of Corie's before he looked away. "What brings you out to get coffee near noon today? You usually get it around eight or nine. Never mind that question." he waved his hand and looked back up at her. "Have you heard the buzz lately?" he asked, wondering if she was one of those people that thought of the 'kingdom' as a physical place.

airy gripped the edge of the smooth counter as the boy spoke, not answering his question for seconds on end until she realized with a jolt that he had actually responded to her, unlike many other people who saw her as an outcast with her boring looks and purple strands of hair and all. "oh!" the same style of surprise was shown in her words, and she pressed her lips together to clear her throat before continuing in a more even tone, "no thank you, sir. just the iced coffee, please." she didn't know the boy personally, so she went with her usual choice of words- the ones mannerly people used- and shot him another of her smiles, though this one was more on the real side than the fake. he seemed kind enough, with his sunny looks (literally: light skinned, platinum-blonde hair, warm eyes) and kind words. even though he worked here and that was his job, she still internally thanked him for not being snobby, like some baristas. who knew he could be a shifter, just a few communities away from her own? she, of course, did not. waiting patiently to be handed her sweating cup of cold coffee, airy rummaged through her back pocket before pulling loose a wad of cash, expertly flattening the correct amount on the edge of the counter before storing the rest back in her pocket. normally, she liked to be ready to hand the cashier her money so he or she did not have to stand there and wait as an awkwardness stretched between them when she reached to her behind to collect the payment. most especially when that person looked appealing enough as this boy, and around her age.

Basil finished up her drink and wiped his hands on his apron, which were wet from the drink. He pushed the drink towards her, making sure it didn't fall from the counter as he pulled back his hand. "That would be $5.06, please." The boy returned her smile and opened the cash register, holding out his hand for the bill and coins. It seemed like not many people were working today, as it was Saturday and typical employees got the day off. Except for Basil, who needed the extra money after having to work such a short shift because of the curfews. Today, it looked like he would be taking a lot of orders, along with shelving a lot of books. The coffeeshop recieved shipments of books every Friday, and the boxes waited on the counter in the back room for Basil to take out the books, dusting each one off with his palm to read the title. When he shelved books, he liked to think up a story to match the title, and sometimes coordinate it with the image on the front. Perhaps his next story idea would be about a girl with a familiar melancholy smile and pink streaks in her hair. His fingers tapped against the cash register, not out of impatience, but he tapped along to a song of his favorite on the playlist that was usually played to set a nice mood for the coffee shop. It was High Hopes, by Kodaline, and he hummed along to the lyrics as he watched the customer pull out her money.

with a nod and a quick scan of the dollar bills and coins in her palm, airy held out her hand towards the boy, offering payment and a tip of five dollars for him. anyone in this town would be glad to be given a tip, so of course she thought he would as well. he deserved it, too. her chocolate brown gaze shifted from the money to his fingers as she heard them drum against a smooth surface. what beat was that? she bit her bottom lip, trying hard to switch through all of the songs she knew that sounded like that. and... ah-hah! there it was: high hopes. unfortunately, she knew the beat but nothing else of the song, so she couldn't sing along with his fingers or quiet humming. instead, with her free hand, she began to tap the same tune as he was, giggling softly as their fingers rose and fell in unison. by now, airy thought, he probably thought she was super-weird... but it didn't bother her. if she were to show the people around her any side of her, she would definitely show this one loud and proud. it was better to be weird than shy, in her opinion. you could make friends by speaking, and you couldn't while hanging back and watching other people laugh and talk and run and fly-- oh, flying. it seemed she could branch every word she said off to finally come to the word 'fly' or 'flying'. such a beautiful word... snapping out of her wandering thoughts, airy glanced up at the boy, hoping it hadn't been five minutes of her standing there absentmindedly as she thought and made a beat that replayed with her fingers. just hoping this hadnt happened made her cheeks lightly flush with color.

Basil smiled shyly, and ceased the finger-tapping when the song ended. He took the money and placed the extra five dollars to the side of the cash register, placing the bills and coins in the correct slots. The boy pushed the drawer closed and shoved the extra bill in his apron pocket, trying not to make him seem too greedy. "Thank you, for the tip, er..." Basil remembered that he didn't know her name, and looked her to her as if asking what it was, wanting to give her a respective thanks. It really did mean a lot to him, too, because his salary was lower then most, and he could use the extra bills, if only for the bus ride home, back to the community which was out of town. His specific community was too far away for him to walk to work and get there as early as he possibly could, so he walked a mile every morning to the nearest bus stop and took the bus to work.

airy took his shy smile gleefully, happy that she hadn't stood there like a boulder and scared the crap out of him with her inhumane stillness as she thought and thought and thought. "airy." she replied naturally, not helping but grinning again as his own happy look still hung on his lips, "but you can call me airy." she seemed unaware that she had messed up her official greeting with the boy until she thought over her words. if not for her hands making their way to flatten themselves on the counter, she would have facepalmed. "i mean... i'm airyanna, but you can call me airy. sorry, uhmm...?" now it was airy's turn to ask for his name, and she arched a brow as she met his light gaze. waiting for his reply so she'd know a new person's name, the girl reached over to grab her heavily-sweating medium-sized cup of vanilla iced coffee. this simple action caused her shirt to lift inches from where it was settled, revealing her uncomfortable vest to basil.

Basil's smile slowly dissapeared from his face as he noticed the vest. "I'm Basil..." His voice drifted off, and he was at first trying to pretend that he didn't see the vest that trapped Airy from flight, but then decided against it. After all, he'd met another shifter! He'd known there was something off about her, from the way her eyes told a story of longing for freedom, the same story that Basil saw in his own eyes when he looked into a mirror. He leaned across the counter, so that his face was close to her's, keeping his voice hushed so that nobody could hear what he was about to say next. "You're a shifter." The boy looked at her face, suddenly blushing when he noticed his face was so close to her's that their noses almost touched. He knew he wasn't supposed to risk talking about shifters outside of the communities, but he felt compelled to sympathize with Airy. Basil looked down at the counter, also noticing that his remark wasn't so clever as he thought. Good job, captain obvious. Really nailed it this time! He cursed his own stupidity, and hoped he wasn't blushing any more feriously.

airy, as always, was confused and honestly quite flustered when she first heard the boy's (oops i lied, she and i know his name) voice so close to her ear, and comprehended what he'd said in seconds flat before she turned to see his face not even an inch away. but for some reason, she only stood there, eyes wide as she tried to figure out how he knew this about her and how he'd gotten so close in such little time she had given him to while she grabbed her ordered drink. "i-i am." the words erupted from her lips without a second thought, and seeing as neither of them were thinking straight right then anyways, she lifted her hand to gently grab his chin and bring it up so she could look him in the eyes. she wanted to see the honesty in his eyes when he answered her next question, and didn't bother to step back and put some space between them. "basil, are you?" her own eyes were just slightly squinted as she looked him dead in the eye, her soft hand still caressing his chin as she held it up at just the right level. she knew no customers were looking this way anyway, so she was safe to remain in this position and not feel awkward about it. her drink sat in her other hand, dripping it's coldness onto her.

At first, Basil was a bit shocked to find his shin caught in the hand of a pretty girl, as he leaned over a counter in quite an uncomfortable way as he stood half on his tip-toes to do so, with his forearms supporting his weight on the counter, and his apron getting all wrinkled caught on the edge of the counter in the way it was. He was looking into her eyes, too. But, then he got serious and remembered her question, slowly gulping to answer. "Y-yes. I'm a bobcat." He tried to keep his voice as low and steady as possible, eyes staring dead-straight into her deep brown orbs. The boy couldn't help but continue to blush, hoping to god that the manager didn't decide to check up on him at that moment. He held his breath, not wanting to awkwardly breath onto her face, not because his breath smelt bad (in fact he had a mint in the corner of his cheek), but because he didn't want to break his seriousness. It wasn't a light subject to prod on, either.

(I just realized my replies are getting a bit short, sorry about that, dear.)

nodding quickly, airy removed his chin from her light grasp and set her hand on the top of her cup, swirling the straw around. she'd hoped he was at least one of her neighboring communities... but then again, maybe it was for the better he was farther away. it kept her from wanting to disobey the government and sneak over to chat with him, now that'd she'd, well, officially met him. basil. the bobcat. more than twice the size as she in shifted form. "alright. mmm, you already know i've got to be some type of bird." giving him a sheepish grin, airy pointed to her vest before going back to stirring her coffee, even though it was perfectly mixed together already. "i'm a purple-crowned fairywren. that's where my first and last name come from. airyanna crowns. and the reason i dyed the purple streaks in my hair." she had no idea why she was telling basil these things about her that she'd usually never tell a stranger, no matter if he or she was a shifter or not. but, actually... she did have an idea of why. it was because, other than the flyers she'd lived with most of her life, she'd met no other shifters, and especially ones so kind. it seemed she could vent or tell this bobcat anything she wanted to and trust him to keep it a secret. and she liked that about him very much, right from the start.
