The sun was hot, pounding down on the sleek concrete of the skatepark. Off to the side a boy sat on the edge of a quarter-pipe watching two of his friends play a game of skate. The two were brother and sister, Mark and Shantel, Mark being the younger of the two at eighteen. Their skateboards clattered on the pavement, and their laughter and swearing filled the air as their competition intensified. A small grin played across the boy’s face. The rules of the game of skate were simple. One person would do a trick and everyone else had to copy the trick, if they succeeded they got a letter until they spelled the word ‘skate’. So far Mark was winning.
The dark haired boy leaned forwards on the edge of the quarter-pipe, watching Mark wind up for a trick. The older boy sped towards the rail, lifting up, he and his board soared into the air and just like that he was gone. His skateboard clattered lifelessly to the ground, clanging loudly against the rail that had been intended to be used for a grind. “What?” The lanky boy scrubbed at his eyes furiously. “What!?” Shantel was gone too, her skateboard rolling off the pavement and stopping in the rocks that bordered the park. He sat in stunned silence, staring at the space his friends had just been occupying. There was no way, people didn’t just vanish. That was crazy! Preposterous!
He slung his jacket over his Pearl Jam t-shirt, not bothering to zip it up. His skateboard hit the pavement and he was on top of it in one fluid movement, pushing hard with his right foot to propel himself forward. He left the abandoned skateboards behind, following the small sidewalk that led to the park until he hit the pavement of the streets. Everything seemed like it was straight out of some horror movie, cars crashed into the sides of building, kids pulling themselves from the wreckage. A sharp energy was starting to hum through him, but he blamed it on the adrenaline coursing through him, not yet aware of the true cause.
There were things that he couldn’t even fully comprehend, a girl suspending water in the air, another kid lifting a car off of a young boy, another girl who was there one moment and gone the next. What the hell was going on!? Too busy focused on the things going on around him he didn’t see the rock until it was too late. His wheel caught and dug and he and his entire skateboard flipped head over heels into a steel street light. The humming energy that was still flowing through him seemed to divert from him into the steel and light overhead flickered to life before exploding and raining glass down on him.
Now he was really starting to panic. He hadn’t done that, had he? No, there was no way. He picked himself up, wincing as he sliced open his hand on the glass but he was off again. Already that hum coursing through his body again. His breath was starting to come in shallow gasps and he really needed a smoke. It was a horrible habit, but he couldn’t quit. He pulled one from his pocket, lighting the cigarette and taking a heavy drag, being careful not to trip over anymore rocks.
It wasn’t too long before he saw them, a little girl with a teenage looking boy. The girl seemed useless, but the boy he might know what was going on. “Hey! Hey you!” He called out, his voice was slightly raspy and more than a little dreamy sounding to a young girl *wink, wink*. “Do you know what’s going on here?” The tall boy skidded to a halt, taking a last puff off of his smoke before stomping on the butt. “Please for the love of Talos tell me this is a crazy dream, I just saw a seven year old lift up a car like it was nothing!” His dark eyes were wide and concerned, no longer panicked as his smoke had helped calm him down, but even so that hum still flowed through him and he was convinced this was just a dream.

The anger was obvious in the boy and it practically seemed to spark off of him as another body slammed into his, making him stumble forwards a few steps. Metal music still blasted through his head phones and he couldn’t make out what the other guy was saying, but his face deepened into a vicious scowl and his hands balled into fists. That was the reason he was going to this stupid school. His anger management problem and his tendency to beat senseless first, ask questions later.
The other boy was still waving and gesturing and his lips still moved and Adam begrudgingly yanked one headphone out just in time to catch the words. “I got a car out back if they still held it for me.” He watched through shaded eyes as the other guy sauntered off. He loathed the thought of getting stuck with some random person, but a lift to town would be cool, he was keen on walking the whole way and it had been a long time since he’d hotwired a car. Besides, Drew and his squad seemed to have swooped in and stolen any available vehicles anyways.
Teeth grinding together and hissing curse words under his breath he crammed his earphone back in and stalked angrily after the other boy, boots thudding the ground. He found the vehicle alright and jerked the door open, nearly ripping the handle right off, and clambered into the front seat. He didn’t bother to throw a seatbelt on and sat in stony silence, studiously ignoring the other boy and only paying attention to the music flowing through his ears. This day wasn’t going to get any better.
