Avaloni wrote:Shaylee paused. "He'll hire you for random help here and there regardless. The being a cook is dependent on how much he likes your cooking. But, you can give it a shot." She opened the door, and waited for Tabitha to follow. After she'd closed the door and hidden the key she walked through the little hall and up to the bar. "Rusty." The man swivled his head around, tearing away from talking to Amber, one of the waitresses. "Huh?" He asked her, his stubble becoming prevalent. "I'm letting Tabitha try her hand at cooking. Said you'd hire her if you liked it." Rusty frowned thoughtfully, eyeing Tabitha as if he was extracting her culinary knowledge by simply looking at her. "Okay." He said after a moment of consideration, and then resumed his conversation with Amber, which although Shaylee wasn't paying too much attention, sounded like they were talking about the layout of the chairs and where to put the grumpy people. "C'mon." Shaylee said, leading Tabitha into the kitchen. It was cool and white, with industrial appliances. "You can't ever take your jacket off here, because there's always health inspectors coming in here trying to bust us. I'm sure you're used to keeping it on, anyway, though." Shaylee walked over to the fridge door, which lead to a room instead of a compartment. "Well, you can prepare a dish of your own or look through our recipes. Make sure to do your best, since you're aiming to impress Rusty."

Tabitha smiled faintly, going through her mental store of recipes. She'd read about ten french cookbooks cover to cover. She couldn't make all of the recipes in them, but she thought of zucchini. There was a delicious zucchini recipe in Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Tabitha quickly washed her hands, then pulled out six of the bumpy emerald squashes and grated them finely into a strainer. Tabs paused, running through instructions in her head again, then started back up. She rolled her jacket sleeves up to her elbow, then took a dry tea-towel and squeezed out the moisture from the zucchini. Quickly, she put two tablespoons of butter in a skillet with some shallots, and then briefly sauteed them. The smell of the cooking shallots filled the room with warmth. Tabs loved cooking, and thought just so as she gently dumped the zucchini in the pan.

Tabs finished up the scrumptious squash's preparation, and then chose a medium square plate to serve it on. Placing a small mound of the zucchini prettily at an angle on the side, she took a bit of black pepper and sprinkled it lightly over the top. She found a dried basil leaf and a larger cherry tomato and delicately set just so on the plate. Tabitha walked to the club soda and pour just a few drops of grenadine, a pomegranate syrup, in, along with some actual pomegranate juice. She picked up the tongs, struggled to grip the slippery ice with them, but managing to get a few ice cubes for her glass. Tabs placed the glass on a nice wooden serving tray, along with the plate and table settings. "I'm done.Do I take it to him?'

((just realized something. tabs is twelve. Do goldhawks have child laborlaws?!? That could pose a problem with the inspectors.))

((Due to many lives being lost in the numerous wars over the short span of time the city has had to endure, the labor laws have dropped to age 13, but of course she can always lie about her age. 1 year's different really isn't too much one way or the other, right? But, her shift has to be significantly less than that of an adult. 5 hours 5 days a week max. {Of course this can always be exceeded, but on paper that's the most you can say she works.} She also can't do any dangerous job, or anything in a high-risk environment. Generally she wouldn't be trusted with expensive equipment either. But just a cook should be safe enough to Goldhawk regulations. They created these regulations to seem more like a goverment to the people, instead of the guerrilla group that they really are. Yes, I've thought about this.. :) ))

Shaylee smiled as she watched Tabitha make herself at home in the industrial-grade kitchen. She knew she should probably be outside working. Bossing around the waitresses and telling them the specials for the day. Cleaning up tables and acting friendly for customers. But she didn't, because she wanted to watch Tabitha work. She stared with her hands clasped in front of her silently until the young girl was done. She walked over, smelling the dish the girl had prepared. "It smells lovely, and although I generally don't like zucchini, I think you picked one of Rusty's favorite veggies. Come on, bring your dish." Shaylee walked through the kitchen door and into the bar. Rusty was there, serving root beer to a boy sitting on the barstool. He looked about seventeen, but his air of carelessness but still alertness and the relaxed set of his shoulders told her he was used to being alone - and he was happy about it. He didn't make eye contact though - a contradictory nervous habit. His shaggy hair the color of dark honey rested at his eyebrows, light danced off of his light hazel eyes. Shaylee ignored him for the most part though. It wasn't unusual for teenagers to come here alone... Still... something about him made her suspicious. He had a certain way of talking, or maybe it was just how he carried himself, but it reminded her of a tendit. He was wearing a dark, concrete gray hoodie. She walked past him directly up to Rusty, and tapped him on the shoulder. "Rusty." She said. He turned around, holding a glass of either grape juice or wine. She hoped it was juice. 8:00 AM was way too early to start drinking. "Yes?" He asked her expectantly. She stepped aside for Tabitha to present her dish."Tabitha is done preparing her first dish here. See if you like it." She turned to Tabitha and whispered something in the girl's ear before stepping away and giving them both some space. "Don't get too high hopes, he's a pretty harsh critic."

(The boy in the gray hoodie will become a character for me. I'm currently in the process of making a form.)

⚜ Devon Lucas Jones • Vespertilio • Lucas ⚜

Postby Avaloni » Fri Mar 28, 2014 3:13 pm

Image
Name: Devon Lucas Jones, codenamed Vespertilio ("Bat" in Latin). Devon goes by the name "Hawke" in mocking memory of his past at the facility.
Height: 5'11"
Eye Color: Hazel brown.
Hair Color: Light brown, or in certain light a very, very dark honey.
Age: Seventeen
History: Devon lived with scientists ever since he was three. He had no idea what happened to his mother, but only assumed she was killed after being exposed to a chemical during a rebel attack on the base which made her unable to conceive children and therefore became useless to the Goldhawks. He was jostled between instructors and handlers, but none could seem to get through to him. He was a quick learner but never obedient. He was always more willing to be punished than to obey. He had a huge amount of anger toward the Goldhawks for killing his mother (or so he'd assumed) and for treating him poorly. He learned especially well the art of swordplay, although he had shaky hands so aim with guns wasn't his strongsuit. The nickname "Vespertilio" meaning "Bat" in Latin came from the saying about him "Bat out of hell" which described his ferocity and agility. The scientists generally didn't like him because he was very untrustworthy and almost beat one to death on two occasions. He was a friend of Farin's, and escaped with Farin.
Personality: Hawke grew up angry. He was always a fighter at heart and not one to give up easily for the sake of others.. For his own sake, that was a different story. His own wellbeing never seemed a cause worth fighting for until he'd met Fairn. He had the tenacity to stick to his resolve and refused to be taught otherwise during training. Although he does have a strong opinions about the goldhawks, that doesn't mean he doesn't have his soft spots. Although never willing to trust a human too easily, Hawke is always willing to help a fellow tendit in need. He despises those who stayed in the facility to work for the goldhawks. He is overall generally a very pleasant person, although violent if brought to anger. He can be brought into bouts of sadness if his mind lingers on his mother too long. He never talks about his past or his mother.
Other: Hawke has one very big secret; he's a tendit hiding in plain sight. He did something so nobody would ever know who he really was. To hide his identity and secure freedom forever. Also to reject his past life no matte the consequence of pain. (You'll find out exactly what this is later on).

HAWKE

Hawke sipped on his root beer through a black straw, the sunlight shining on his light brown hair through a grimy window. He finished the drink and help the glass up to his lips, tilting it so that the ice would slide into his mouth. He put the glass down empty, having chewed all the ice. He slid his money onto the wooden bar counter and left. He would've said goodbye, but the bartender that he'd been talking to was engaged in a conversation with a twelve year old girl and a blonde waitress. He shrugged on the hood of his hooded jacket and walked down the street. Hawke didn't have a car, but he knew the bus schedule by heart, and that was close enough for now. He boarded the bus and flashed his six-month pass at the driver. The driver was a burly, overweight and smelly fellow with a blue baseball cap on. The cap featured a fraying decal of the American Flag, and a grease stain by the visor area. Must be a rebel. The driver grunted acknowledgement and Hawke took a seat with his back to a window and about two feet away from a door. The bus wasn't crowded, and he was alone but for an old woman clearly nor paying attention to anything, and a young man of about 30, both on the opposite side of him. The man had a gold bracelet, which instantly made Hawke tense. Gold bracelets generally symbolized Goldhawk workers. But why would a Goldhawk take public transportation? Especially at this hour. Maybe he was on a mission. That didn't help settle Hawke's nerves. The man in front of him had dark brown hair. So dark it was almost black. He also had the start of a beard, but it was still in the in between stages of an actual short beard and long stubble. He lifted his head, staring at Hawke for a moment. "Hey." Hawke looked up, a sense of unease spreading through him, mixed with an adrenaline rush. Both told him to get up. To rush the man. He was a Goldhawk worker. The bus driver wouldn't tell. The old woman was probably too out of it to notice. And, Hawke had a hunting knife. But, he pushed down the primal urge and stared back with a calm expression. "Hey." He replied. His tone was easy, and nonthreatening. The potential Goldhawk pulled down his leather jacket sleeves, covering the gold band. "What's your name?" He asked. Hawke debated if telling the man his alias would be alright or not. But why not? "Hawke." he replied slowly. The stranger's eyebrows shot up. "Hawke, huh? Why such a bold name. You some Goldie supporter?" Hawke smirked. This was how all Goldhawks tried to reel in rebels. Pretending to be one."I'm no supporter, not a rebel either. Just a guy with an unfortunate name." The stranger was not convinced. "Then why'd you name yourself Hawke? Are you mocking them?" Hawke almost sneered. Is this guy baiting me?? Hawke frowned at the man, allowing a sliver of his frustration show. "Naw, man. I told ya. I have an unfortunate name. My mom, she was a rebel. She got hurt during the crossfire and died when I was very young, though. Happy now?" Hawke glared at the man. The man glared back. "Yes." Hawke made a growl-like sound in his throat. Hawke shoved his hands into his hoodie's pockets. "What about you, with that gold bracelet?" He spoke in a cool tone, although the question was suggestive. The stranger seemed to relax. "This? This ain't anything..." He pulled down his jacket sleeve further. "Don't worry about it. I'm not Goldhawk, okay?" Hawke ignored the man for the rest of the bus ride, although his mind kept slipping to the knife in his boot. The bus lurched to a stop. Hawke got up without looking out of the window. He knew the bus route by heart, and knew it was his stop. He got off the bus and strode down the tree-lined sidewalk. The trees here were old enough to survive the pollution and poor environment. Their roots could stretch down deep enough to the good soil. Hawke walked down the sidewalk a little ways before breaking into the forest, following no in particular path except the one he'd created a long time ago.

(Hawke is near the house where Caroline & Sherry are).

~Caroline~

Caroline decided to get out of the car, due to the fact that she couldn't sleep. She opened and closed the car door soundlessly. Caroline started heading towards the front of the woods, but didn't even realize she was going towards the front. She was just wondering in a random direction. She was going straight, so that she could find her way back easily. Caroline knew exactly why she couldn't sleep. It was because she knew that there were people out there looking for her. Caroline just couldn't put it through her head that they couldn't find her now. She couldn't believe herself when she said it. She was just to... All of a sudden, Caroline ran into something, losing her train of thought. She looked up to see what it was, and it turned out to be a person. She almost started running, but she realized that it was a perfectly normal "odd one," like her. She stood up slowly, and looked the boy in the eyes, not saying a word.

HAWKE

Postby Avaloni » Sat Mar 29, 2014 1:44 pm

((What do you mean by "Odd one"?))
HAWKE

Hawke heard her before he saw her. It was in the rustling of the underbrush, and in the quieting of the birds. He lifted his hazel eyes to meet hers; she was skittish, and reminded him of a young doe spooking at every new sound. He gave his best comforting smile. He could tell what she was. It was in the way she walked, and in the bulge at her back. He didn't say anything about it, though. That'd probably make her even more unsure of him. He wondered how long she'd been on her own. The world was a tough one to start anew in as a teenager without any credibility, any money, and no place to stay. He wondered how she'd managed it. Some did well.. Others couldn't handle it. Most did okay. He didn't have the chance to talk to that many, though. Most avoided each other like the plague. "Hey". He greeted her in a soft tone, as if not to disturb the peace of the tranquil forest.

~Caroline~

Caroline heard the boy's voice greet her, and was a bit surprised. She was surprised that he had even looked at her. "H-Hi..." She stuttered in a quiet voice. She noticed the boy had brown, shaggy hair, and quite big, hazel eyes. He was a few inches taller than her, but she could still look into his eyes without standing on her toes. Caroline looked down at her bare, scared arms. She really liked the scars, though. But she always felt self conscious about others seeing them. Like they would judge her for something she didn't do. She just wanted to tell everyone why she had these, but she couldn't. They would find out she was a run away. Then again, they would probably be able to tell by the fact she had little wings growing out of her back.

HAWKE

Hawke followed the girl's eyes down to her scarred arms. She either cuts herself or they were inflicted upon her. Either way, he felt a bit sorry for. Of course, he could completely understood her pain. He did something he considered similar, anyway. She looked a little younger than him, about sixteen, maybe. "What's your name?" He asked as she just stood there in front of him. Frightened as she seemed to be, she didn't walk past him like some sort of indifferent stranger. That was always one thing that annoyed him about typical humans. They were all mostly busybodies too caught up in their own little trials to do so much as acknowledge the existence of someone right next to them. And he knew that nobody ignored him because they thought he was a tendit. He was perfectly disguised as a normal human being. There was no tell-tale bulge at his back for wings. Nobody could tell just by looking at him that he was a tendit. But people were normally so caught up that they were either afraid to take a chance on conversation with a stranger, or simply didn't care enough to admit that there was another living being next to them. That's why Hawke was always partial to fellow tendits over humans. Call it racist, but that was what it was.

Caroline took her focus off of her arms, and looked at the boy again. "Oh. I, uh... My name is Caroline. Nice to meet you." Caroline held her hand out for him to shake. Most people ignored her hand, due to the fact that she was a tendit. But, that didn't matter. At least this boy was one like her. At least she has found another one of her kind after the flee. Caroline never got out. She tried, but was one of the few people that got stopped. Caroline looked at the boy's face, but it was to dark to see his exact features. Yes, she could see the color of his hair and eyes, but not much more was as clear. So, Caroline decided to stop trying, and get to know this boy. It could turn out that they would be best friends, maybe even more. But they would never find out if they didn't talk to each other.
