indentindentEverything was crumbling, and Reyna could feel her self-confidence and heart shatter. Hearing her Mother's name didn't help either, in fact, it only made the guilt and shame start to pile on higher. Guilt she had hidden away so nobody could see or suspect it. She knew she made a wrong decision in making her family think she had died, but what else was she to do? If she wrote a letter telling them why she ran away she would've been branded as crazy or written off as being ungrateful, and she didn't want to sever that trust she had built. It didn't help that Danny was going to ruin that as well potentially. One wrong word and suddenly her family had the impression she was alive. If he brought them back, no, not if, when he brought them back she was going to bring so much danger to her family. Her... real, and.. fake? Family?

indentindentShe felt her throat close as her mind started to doubt itself. Who was her real family? It had to be the shifters, right? But Danny was here and he was once a part of her family. So was he the real or fake family? Or... a middleman?

indentindentReyna wanted to grab her hair and pull it out as her body started to adjust to what was truly going on. Her past had finally caught up to her, and now she was going to have to tell the truth. To everyone. She felt sick, and in one quick motion she turned away from the group and let herself cough and nearly throw up, but it was to no avail. The food in her stomach refused to come up, and instead, she was left with this nauseating feeling in her gut. Like she could throw up, but the relief of actually doing so would never occur. Her whole body felt cold, but sweat sat on the back of her neck to remind her that she was caught in the crossfire.

indentindentAt least Courtney was being reasonable and not freaking out, the last thing she wanted was for more drama to follow them. Going inside, however, meant that more people would be subjected to Reyna's lies, and the last person she wanted to see was Rio. However, Courtney did have a point. Reyna was freezing, her feet were bare and she had no jacket. The warmest thing on her was the two-times-too-big plaid pajama pants from her older brother. Or was it her Dad? Shoot, everything was starting to blend together and confuse the poor girl. She didn't know what was real or not anymore.

indentindentHer eyes frantically shifted around the wilderness to try and find an outlet, anything to maybe prevent them from going inside and having more people be subjected to this chaos. "Uh, is that a good idea?" Reyna felt herself shrink in on herself at the look Courtney gave her. She could tell the older woman was pissed, or maybe just, upset with... well everything that had to do with Reyna right now. "I'm.. I'm..."

indentindentThere was no way, Reyna, who was always talking and had something to say had nothing to say right now. Her throat was dry and she was cold and everything was going wrong.

indentindent"Danny, i'm.. I'm sorry. I know... I know how hard it must've been to go to another funeral but I couldn't stay. I can't go back, and they can't know i'm alive." She took a moment to step toward Danny to reach her hand out and place it on his bicep. "I'm... I didn't run away because i'm that kind of different Danny. I'm not human. If I stayed at home I would've risked getting everyone hurt, or killed!" Her face started to heat up as the truth started to flow out. It felt, weird... wrong even, to tell someone about this. The last person she had told, who was human, was Charles' friend. They at least knew of shifters, Danny had no idea what was going on.

indentindentHer heart started to bounce up in her throat, and she felt like she couldn't breathe. It was way too much to handle right now, and she had to get away. She had to run.

indentindentAll she ever did was run, and she needed to get away from this. She knew it would only complicate things and make her seem guiltier than she was [which was a lie she was as guilty as they come by] but everything inside of her wanted to run. To remove herself from this situation and pretend it never existed. If she ran far and fast enough then maybe she could forget it all. If she left now there was no way Rio would be able to locate and catch up with her, right?

indentindentBut she was trapped with Danny, Courtney, Vic, and of course Hank. SHe had to, force once in her life, own up to what was going on. "I don't want anyone to fight, and just please can we not go inside and get others involved? I don't want things to get worse and I..." Her eyes darted to the others around, and with a quick glance at Rio she felt her throat close up farther. "I don't want Rio to yell at me right now."

indentindentShe wanted nobody to yell at her right now, but she knew if she continued to avoid and stop addressing the issue then she would have to. If she could defuse this conversation right now and get inside without Courtney dragging her away then maybe she could escape to her room and leave out the window. Then she'd at least have some time to herself in the woods without anyone hammering her about who Danny was, why she was dead, and why she [b]lied to them all.

indentindentA promise that she didn't mean to could only go so far. Not everyone would accept it, and then she'd be in a deeper grave.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxAndi balled the fabric of Rio’s shirt in her fists, her hands gripping onto his back as she held herself there. He didn’t return the hug, not properly, and she could just barely feel the weight of his jaw as he rested it on her head. Displays of tactile affection weren’t exactly his forte, but the lack of his arms around her made her stiffen slightly in unfamiliarity. Maybe it was because of their audience. The second thing she noticed was the absence of his overcoat and the way his sleeves were bunched at the elbows. That was even more unlike him, her brother practically lived in those damned things. A few moments of silence passed, and when Rio still didn’t return the hug properly, she turned her cheek against his chest to glance at his arms. He held them awkwardly—bent at the elbow and suspended in the air, the same way she did when she got flour all over her hands trying to bake with Neil. There was a dark substance dried onto them, the exact same colour that Mercer’s skin had been covered in. It cracked around the knuckles and there were a few meandering pink trails that cut paths through the otherwise rich crimson, areas where the blood had been mixed and diluted with water droplets—or something similar. Andi swallowed, gently releasing her hold and taking a small step backwards so she could see his eyes. “Josie’s?” She asked, her voice a quiet whisper.

There was the subtlest nod from the raven, and Andi sighed soundlessly in relief. She didn’t want it to be Josie’s, but at least it wasn’t his, or Coby’s, or Reyna’s—or well, anyone’s really. She was struggling to truly wrap her head around the fact that Josie was gone, and she was sure that come sunrise the gravity would hit her like a freight train, but right now she was just relieved that no one else seemed to be seriously injured.

Soren had begun to speak, and Andi felt her entire body stiffen at his words. she curled her nails into her palm, hiding the tiny pinpricks of blood that stained the tips. Her brother was many things, but unobservant wasn’t one of them, and she winced guiltily as he turned from glaring at Soren to look at her with narrowed eyes. Oh, yeah she was in trouble. And, judging by the way Rio moved to try and step around her, so was Soren. “It was a misunderstanding!” She tried, mirroring his half-step so she remained between him and the poor man she had almost mauled. Rio hesitated, and for a moment Andi had the audacity to slump her shoulders in relief.

Your man’s been doing hardly anything about it,

She whipped her head around to look at Soren, her mouth opening in poorly concealed shock. The blonde gestured to Salem, and Andi could practically hear Rio’s seething. She threw her palms up in surrender, “Soren that’s not very kind!” She glanced at Salem, who’s bloodshot eyes made her heart lurch painfully. In any other situation she’d have tackled him into a hug, but the looming threat of a fight breaking out forced her to stay rooted in place. Instead she offered the blonde a pitifully downturned smile, her eyebrows knitting together as her lips quivered. “I’m sure, I’m sure he’s doing his best—we’re all just upset,” She tried, her words barely mollifying Rio if his darkened expression was anything to go by. Her eyes flickered over her brother’s face, the sheer effort it was taking him to remain somewhat stoic evident in the tension set in his jaw. She was thankful he was making the effort though—even if it was just for her sake.

Either let us go, or offer some damn help,

Andi was stunned into silence. It just kept going. Soren wanted to leave? To wander through the woods at this hour with his forehead crusted in blood and Briar as injured as he was? How long would it take for them to make it to the town? If they followed the road it would surely take at least three days—and that was for someone who was uninjured. Cars were few and far between, and Andi personally knew she’d be skeptical of picking up someone who was of Soren’s stature and state in the middle of nowhere. It was practically a death sentence, they’d somehow stand a better chance of living if they insulted Court in front of Vic. Not that their precarious situation mattered to Rio, she could pray to the gods that he grew more sympathetic to humanity’s plight as much as she wanted, but it would be to no avail. The tension in his face ebbed just slightly and she realised he was genuinely considering the proposition—probably imagining the many ways Soren and Briar would lose their lives. Surely Soren wasn’t being serious about being let go! Rio tilted his head slightly, a faint look of satisfaction in his expression. She knew exactly what the raven was thinking before he even opened his mouth, and she could only stifle a strained whine as he spoke.

There’s an idea,” The words were low and gravelly, and Andi shook her head immediately in protest, glancing at Salem as if he had any chance of backing her up. “Go then, you may leave.” The tiger noticed how her brother refused to look at her, instead obstinately set on pinning his attention on Soren. She’d bet her favourite set of bangles on the fact he was most likely contemplating how long he’d have to trail them for before ensuring they never made it out of the forest. The thought made her a lump thicken in her throat, a faint nausea settling in her stomach.

No, no!” She retaliated almost instantly, bleating her plea at him. Andi took a second to inhale deeply, composing herself as she waved her hands in the air between the four men. Turning to face Soren and Briar, her expression contorted into something akin to exasperated desperation. “Just please, stay the night? We can look at getting you someplace else tomorrow when it’s light out, wild animals live out there, and it’s impossibly cold—gods the nearest town is a three hour drive!” She could feel the weight of Rio’s stare, and she recoiled just slightly as she glanced at him sheepishly. “Please?

There was a moment of silence before he sighed through gritted teeth, and Andi brightened internally as she recognised the reluctant admission of defeat. She might not have the same sway that Reyna very clearly held, but he was still softer on her than most and gods she was willing to capitalise on it.

Thank you!” She chirped, already making a move to head to the cabin before he had a chance to redact his offer. “C’mon love,” she gestured with her head at Briar, “It’s warmer in there and you can sit down, I’ll make food for you both,”. There was the colourful flickering of lights through the curtains in the lounge, “I think someone’s put a film on too, maybe your other friends might be there, it’s just for one night!

Vic spent the next few moments disassociating as she tried to process her emotions. It felt like the second she took a step out of the cabin she kept getting hit with emotional gut punch after emotional gut punch. She was already emotionally reeling from the death of Josie. Now Vic had to deal with her pissed girlfriend currently appearing as if she was about to stomp the strange man named Danny, Reyna who looked like she was under a lot of stress, and apparently faked her death, the strange man named Danny who knew Reyna, and had no clue that she had run off to the Canadian wilderness to be with a bunch of strangers. Not that she blamed him for being concerned, but from the outside looking in she could definitely see why they came across as a cult of some kind. Most of the people in the nearby town probably thought that way, but they were too polite, or possibly too scared of Rio to say anything.

With a sigh Vic looked down at Hank, seated at her feet, watching what was going on with his head slightly tilted. Hank then stared up at her like "Yeah mom, I can't believe this s*** either". Vic rubbed his ears and took a few deep breaths trying to steady herself before looking around to see if there was anyone more qualified to deal with the situation, like maybe Rio. No bad idea Rio seeing Reyna upset would make things so much worse, and Vic did not need to be an accessory to murder on top of everything else. Coby maybe, Coby was good at diffusing situations and not murdering people. Sadly it seemed it was just the four of them including Hank <3.

Vic took another deep breath, thankfully things had maybe started to calm down, at least a little. Court had turned back into a human, although she did do it right in front of a human but that was a problem for later. And Court was still pissed at Danny understandably so, if Vic wasn't so emotionally exhausted she would have some choice words for Danny right now as well. "I also vote we go inside and wait to talk things out until morning" Vic said, agreeing with Reyna "It's way too late, or I guess early to be dealing with all of this" Vic motioned vaguely into the air, there had far too much trauma this evening and she was too physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted to watch anymore drama play out.

Vic then took a moment and walked over to Reyna and pulled her into a slightly awkward side hug, she wasn't sure how much physical contact Reyna wanted, if any at this point but she at least wanted Reyna to know she was gonna be there for her. "Reyna, listen we're not mad at you okay, you made the choice you thought would be best for you" Vic murmured softly trying her best to comfort Reyna. "I don't know everything that happened between you and your family but I know you, and I know you would never try to upset the people you care about" Vic knew more than anyone how being a shifter was dangerous for the people you were close too she was reminded anytime she looked at the scar on her palm. Vic gave Reyna a small squeeze "I'm not gonna say anything about this to anyone else, but if you need to talk my door is always open". Vic didn't know much about Reyna's past but she knew what it was like to have complicated feelings about your bio family, Vic wasn't sure how much help she could provide Reyna but at least for right now she hoped her words helped sooth Reyna at least a little bit.
