Johanna was born and raised in Stockholm with three older brothers. Over protected her entire life, she sought adventure, and shortly after her eighteenth birthday, she stowed away on one of the large ships that docked into her local port. After being discovered, she was harassed and abused as she learned to pull her own weight and help around the ship, or the crew had threatened to throw her over and let her swim till kingdom come. She took the former option. Although she worked well on a ship, she was left at a port in the Caribbean, where she met a group of ladies in a tavern who patched her up and cut her hair, at her request, in an attempt to appear more masculine and get a job on another ship. She enjoyed the sea, and she couldn't dream of making a life for herself on land after being out on the ocean. She took a few small local jobs for a couple years, disguising herself as a man known as Jo, discovering bits about herself only life experience could have made her question. She learned she had an affinity for other women rather than her male counterparts when exploring taverns in small ports, with her own room where she could be herself for a night. She made due with this life until she was recruited to a real crew, on a real ship. The deal was sketchy, but honest in its money, and accepted her as the woman she was. She immediately knew she was about to get involved with piracy, but the adrenaline junkie in her soul urged her to accept the offer and sail away from a life of lies and stale ale.
