Although the alpha's imprint may b
e human or shifter, they are consi
dered a part of the pack due to th
e importance of genetic alphas. A
newly phased shifter has also join
ed the pack in the days succeedin
g Quin's death, and a subordinate
has assumed the position of third.
The pack has always had close tie
s to the local rangers, going back
over a century, and some of the p
ack are rangers. Ward Dearborn is
the current chief ranger, and a ca
rrier of the dormant shifter gene.

HUMANS are the most numerous s
pecies in all of Elk Creek. In the h
ands of a vampire, or even a shap
e-shifter with poor control, they c
an be frighteningly fragile. If a hu
man is injected with vampire ven
om, their transformation lasts se
veral days, and results in indescri
bable pain. Newborns are unusual
ly strong due to the blood lingeri
ng in their tissues, and retain th
eir bright red eyes for a year, reg
ardless of their diet. Their thirst
for blood is overwhelming and pa
inful, and few newborns are capa
ble of immediately resisting the s
mell of human blood, which often
leaves them violent and uncontro
llable. Not only can humans be tu
rned into vampires, but infected
with a bite or scratch from a CHI

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Werewolves co
uld be considered an even greate
r enemy to a vampire if it were n
ot for their rarity, as they are im
mune to vampire venom yet poss
ess even deadlier strength than s
hape-shifters. Werewolves are in
capable of controlling their trans
formations, which happen at nigh
t and during full moons. Their on
e weakness is the loss of human
consciousness and resulting feral

be born, only created through inf

SHAPE-SHIFTERS are as fast and s
trong as vampires, although on th
eir own, they are not capable of k
illing one and require the number
s of a pack. All shape-shifters tra
nsform into massive wolves, som
etimes described as the height of
a horse, although size varies bet
ween individuals alongside with c
oloration, the latter of which is o
ccasionally thought to reflect a wo
lf's "truest self". Vampire venom i
s fatal to shape-shifters, as it hin
ders their rapid regenerative hea
ling and causes smaller injuries t
o become deadly. In wolf form, a
pack shares a telepathic bond tha
t is indiscriminate. One's deepest
feeelings and most private thoug
hts cannot be hidden from it. Sha
pe-shifters burn hot, and while co
zy to humans, it feels like touchin
g an open flame to vampires. The
claws and teeth of a shape-shifter
are among the few things capable
of piercing a vampire's skin. As p
hases are easily triggered by emo
tions such as anger or fear, many
shape-shifters have initial difficu
lties controlling them, and some c
ontinue to struggle with controlli
ng their emotions even after. The
se same emotions can prevent a
wolf from phasing back, and thus
they must calm down if they wish
to do so. Vampires smell unpleas
ant, even painful, to them. xxxxx

VAMPIRES have skin that is freezi
ng cold to the touch and hard as g
ranite. They can walk in sunlight,
but as direct exposure causes the
m to shimmer like an opalescent
fire, they avoid it. One of their gr
eatest weaknesses is fire, which
causes them to burst into flame li
ke bone dry wood soaked in petrol.
Besides fire, vampires could be ca
lled indestructible by human stand
ards. Only the strength or teeth o
f a shape-shifter or fellow vampir
e are enough to inflict damage on
their stony skin. Vampires that ha
ve been feeding on humans for ye
ars have golden eyes, but non-veg
etarians have crimson eyes, and t
hose making the switch show a gr
adual transition between the two.
Regardless of their chosen diet, a
fter a vampire has tasted human
blood, it requires an immense am
ount of self control to stop mid-fe
ed, and most vampires experienc
e something known as a feeding
frenzy. Only vastly strong vampir
es are capable of turning humans
without killing them. A vampire
must drink blood, or they will we
aken physically and mentally. Thi
rst can be felt as a burning pain.
As each human's blood differs in
taste and smell, the blood of a p
articular human may be unusuall
