Rain grasped the thorn-sharp barb with her tiny teeth, and pulled it out the wrong way. The barb ripped her flank, and she spat it out with long-lasting yelp.

Skye twitched her ears at the yelp and looked at Juno. "If it is.. I want you to run back to camp as fast as you can, okay?"

Rain flopped onto her side, whimpering with pain. She was cold, hungry, and hurt. When's mother coming back..? She thought, beginning to get discouraged. She didn't know Ivyspeckle was her mother, because she hadn't opened her eyes to see her before Ivy was killed.

Skye heard the rustle of leaves and crouched low, signaling Juno to do the same. She peered through some bushes and saw a pup with a significant gash in her flank. She checked and they were close to the border but not quite enough to cross.

Juno got down, pressing her belly to the cool Earth, and nose her way through the bush. "A pup? But it's across our border." She whispered.

Rain's hearing wasn't strong enough to hear them yet. She rolled to her other side, making leaves crunch beneath her, and still whimpering with pain.
