chapter one
MARKING DAY
-----Today marks a monumental event in the Uprising's history. On this day, we light the torch for the first squadron of rebels born in freedom; the Phoenix Squad.-----Today is the Marking Day ceremony. The day our sparks of hope caught aflame. The beginning of the end.----- Marking Day had come at last. Since the Uprising first began, this day had been a long-anticipated dream. Now, eighteen years after Headquarters came to be, the dream was about to become reality. The first generation of children born in freedom would spread its wings today.
----- The cafetorium was packed tight - standing room only. Rebels from all over Headquarters had left their jobs to attend the ceremony. Some had even returned from field-intelligence missions in Delra.
----- Mutters of excitement rippled through the crowd as hundreds of glances flickered between one another and the stage. All five members of the Uprising Council stood onstage, along with a younger woman. They appeared to be waiting for the new recruits to arrive. However, the backstage door behind them was shut.
----- In the back room behind the stage, where the recruits had arrived, trouble was brewing. The door was locked and seemed completely broken. A note had been scrawled across it with dark permanent marker. It was an obnoxious dark blue color and still smelled of Sharpie fumes. Below it, a smaller addition was written in fine green print.
This was my splendid idea. Thank me later!
I wanted you to make a spectacular entrance.
You can pick the lock, but where's the fun in that?
Smash the door! Burn it down! Kick it in!!
Get creative, and make yourselves unforgettable.
We're waiting on the other side!
- Councillor Watson
The stage is carved out of stone, but the curtains are flammable. Let Gavotte know.
Also, please be responsible. You can show off your power, just don't harm the audience.
- Councillor Evelina
████【♟】████Lanette LaneFemale ♟ Pansexual ♟ Pacifism
Tags: A little ant -----Lanette read the note and concluded she wasn't needed for this task. Destruction was not the pacifist's forte, nor did she remotely enjoy it. She was content to retreat to the back of the room, out of the way of her classmates with more violent abilities. She sat down on an old crate that was haphazardly lying in the corner. It creaked under the tiny girl's weight.
-----A red ant scurried out from underneath the crate and began crawling around her feet angrily. Lanette focused on the small creature, and her eyes began to glow violet as her ability took effect. The ant's antennae drooped as it crawled back under the crate, not wanting any more trouble.
████【♫】████Gavotte LaneMale ♫ Heterosexual ♫ Hydrokinesis
Tags: Bad teenagers -----Gavotte knelt in front of the door, reviewing the fine print one last time before stepping back. The Councillor of Intelligence seemed to be
expecting the curtains to catch fire. Gavotte trusted her judgement, meaning, of course, he'd have to prepare himself. He unstrapped the water canteen they'd given him and screwed open the cap. As he raised his free hand in a 'stand up' gesture, the water inside flowed out until it hovered in midair, a clear blob suspended above his hand.
-----"Just in case," He explained, looking at his fellow recruits. He looked and sounded like an exasperated father who'd seen too much teenage misbehavior.
████【➹】████Ardai FairchildMale ➹ Heterosexual ➹ Invisibility
Tags: Apollo -----Ardai didn't bother with the fine print. It was clearly someone else's handwriting, someone much more boring than Watson. None of the other Councillors measured up to that guy.
-----"Get creative? I like how he thinks," Ardai snickered as he cracked his knuckles. He could feel a prank coming on. Maybe today was the day he pranked the High Councillor herself. She'd be standing on the stage, the All-Mother Senegal in all her glory, and he'd launch the biggest spitball ever...
-----Nah. Today was not the day. He was going onstage for goodness sakes, there was no chance he'd get away with his schemes. He'd have to prank the All-Mother some other day.
-----As for the moment, the important thing was busting through this door. Ardai nudged his fire-manipulator roommate with a wry smile.
"Hey Apollo, now's your time to shine. Literally."Edit;
