For centuries, the land called 'Aya' has been hidden from human influence. Though surrounded by harsh, rugged mountains, this valley is a peaceful place with a rather stable climate, full of beautiful forests and fields. While humans haven't lived here for countless years, the valley of Aya is not uninhabited. Alongside the prolific animal life, there is a native race of creatures who look very much like humans - but are not quite the same.

Aya's native beings are kemonomimi, though some humans simply call them 'nekos', despite the fact that they are not all cats. Kemonomimi very closely resemble humans, but have the ears and tails of animals. In Aya, there are eight distinct races or tribes of kemonomimi - Neko (Cat), Inu (Dog), Usagi (Rabbit), Kitsune (Fox), Okami (Wolf), Tora (Tiger), Kuma (Bear), and Shika (Deer). All eight types live amongst each other in the towns and small villages of Aya, though some villages house more of one type than others.

The relatively idyllic life led by the kemonomimi within the shelter of their valley has only recently been disrupted. A group of humans has been driven from their homeland by drought, famine, and destruction, and have been travelling for months looking for uninhabited land to settle in. Having finally scaled the treacherous mountains, they've come upon Aya. Now, humans and kemonomimi alike are each facing down a group of strangers, of a race alien to them - and one way or another, things are about to change forever.

time period - Roughly medieval
landscape - A journey from the north edge to the south edge of the valley of Aya takes roughly five days on foot, while from the west edge to the east edge is only about three days. While the mountains are cold, Aya has fairly moderate temperatures and little extreme weather. It holds both woodlands and open plains. Several streams and a few small rivers flow into the valley from the surrounding mountains.
rule - Aya as a whole is ruled over by a king and queen, though each town/village has an appointed 'guardian' who acts as a leader for that settlement and reports back to the king and queen.

Magic does exist in this world, though it is generally an uncommon skill, rarer among humans. Some are more gifted with magic and can use it at a young age, but most have to learn it, and it often takes a long time to hone. There are three types of magic - Life, Movement, and Ignition.

Life magic is based on the transfer of energy between living things. It is most often used for healing, to transfer positive energy from the healer to someone who is injured or ill. It can also be used to draw energy from one's surroundings, which may strengthen magic ability. However, it can also be used to pull energy from others and weaken them, but is only dangerous if it is very powerful.
Movement magic is sort of like telekinesis, and is used to move or alter objects without touching them. Naturally, moving larger and heavier objects is more difficult. It is used for a wide variety of purposes.
Ignition magic is used to generate fire or bolts of electricity similar to lightning. It is most often used for offense, both inside and outside of combat. However, it can be very difficult to control.

At the east edge of the valley lies a large, if somewhat crude, camp, which is the current residence of Aya's only humans. They have been traveling for a long time, and therefore the group's structure is fairly loose. Their views towards the kemonomimi are highly mixed - some are afraid of them, some are simply curious, some think they are no more than animals, and some simply don't care.

The largest settlement in Aya, located near the center of the valley. It houses the royal palace of Aya's king and queen. It has a number of residents of every race.

In the west of Aya, the valley's largest river forks and comes back together, forming a fairly large island in the center. This island is home to the town of Miokawa. Its residents are mostly Inu and Neko.
