xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxWe did it, we had made it out of the tunnels alive, yet I was still sad. The creature had come chasing after us, and this could
only mean one thing, my parents had fallen. It was evident that everyone had realized this fact, everyone but the second
youngest, my sister, Natalie.
I feel my sister's warm embrace and gently wrap my arms around her, silently, casting my gaze to the starry night sky. There,
I saw two stars shining brighter than all the others. The spirits were toying with me once again, for those were the stars that
my parents had an affinity to, Ede and Draemlir. The star of the royals, the king and queen star. I think back to the time that
mother and father had told me their story.
Origins nowhere near similar, yet tied together by a fate even the Gods could not deny, together forever in the sky, fallen
heroes of the land.
Suddenly, I get pulled out of my thoughts by my younger sister who had called my name. I tear my gaze away from the stars
and down to my sister gently taking her up in my arms, my little moonbeam, as I liked to call her. Just as I was about to open
my mouth to ask her what she needed she asks a question.
“Where’s Mommy and Daddy?”
I feel my heart constrict in my chest as tears blur my vision my entire body tensing. My moonbeam, so innocent, I couldn’t
bring myself to tell her. I tried to keep silent as the little girl, not a day older than ten wiped the tears from my eyes, but
per usual, she was persistent calling my name once again before asking, “Allan what’s wrong? All of you, you all look so
sad...”
I turn to look around at all of my siblings shaking my head in a plea begging them not to tell her, and when her eyes finally
come to rest on me I quietly say, “Mother and Father are sleeping Natalie… just sleeping…”
With those words, I set my sister down turning to my family, “Please watch her.” I say in a bit of a broken voice before
wandering off. I needed some time to myself, I needed to control these emotions raging inside me.
I feel the tears falling slowly down my face. The world had forever lost two great leaders, heroes. I approach the side
of the tunnel the remainder of my family now out of sight, nearly out of earshot. I would be quiet, they wouldn’t hear
anything.
“I’m sorry…” I whisper slamming my fist into the stone wall. I felt warm blood trickle down my fist, I had cut it on a
jagged piece of stone sticking out of the wall.
Little did I know that the scent of my blood would attract the monster chasing us. I fell to my knees and started to really
cry, full out sobbing, it was not a pretty sight, I was a mess.
A few moments later, a chill ran up my spine, it suddenly got cold and… dark. I look up to see the monster who had killed
my parents standing before me right in front of my face.
“Oh you poor child. Mourning the loss of your Mummy and Daddy?” it says in a mocking tone.
Anger and rage started to fill me as I aimed a kick at the foul creature. Unfortunately, the kick only struck open air as
the demon jumped back landing atop the lowest branches of the nearby tree. It grinned at me shaking it’s head as if
disappointed.
“Allan, Allan, Allan... you can do better. Do you not know to control the power that lays deep within you?” It asks with
its face twisted into a foul grimace as it hops down from the tree cutting it’s wrist, beginning to circle me as if I were its
prey. I feel my fingertips begin to glow with a soft light calling forth the air spirits. I was going to borrow them to enchant
my sword, but before I could even draw the weapon, the creature was standing before me it’s claws bared aiming for my
heart.
Unable to react in time the creature’s claws strike me across the chest, but much to my surprise I felt nothing, yet
blood was trickling down my skin. It was the demon’s, it was merging with my blood and forming the shape of the animus.
It took merely a few seconds before the mark was complete. Carefully I run my fingers over it and find that it was purely
scar tissue.
“What did you do to me?” I ask the creature getting defensive, and getting mad. I felt my whole body tingling, but thought
that it was just the rage I was feeling.
Now drawing my sword and successfully enchanting it with the spirits of the air, I dash towards the devil with the sword in
hand, moving significantly faster.
My feet tread lightly on the ground as I aim my sword at the devil’s heart, only to have him catch and stop it with his bare
hand.
“Nothing Allan Masdurett. I merely unlocked your untapped potential.” explains the demon snapping off the tip of my
sword. Immediately, my eyes widened, vision going red with rage. I had never been this wrathful before, in fact, before this
moment I had never known anger. I try to grasp control of my emotions, but it was too late for that. The rage took me over
forcing me to recklessly attack the foul beast that had killed my parents, and making me unable to feel all the damage I had
taken.
Eventually, I collapse to the ground light headed having lost a lot of blood. The normally green grass was stained red under
the light of the cold, unforgiving moon.
“Allan Masdurett, I request that you cooperate with me. I want you to become my vessel.” the creature explains in its ever
soft, and alluring voice. I find myself starting to shake my head.
“If you accept I will spare the rest of your family the burden of becoming my vessel. I want you… but, I suppose if you should
refuse, I could most likely convince your younger sister, the lovely Miss Natalie Masdurett to take your place.”
The devil grins looking down on me covering my body with its shadow. My mind was muddled, yet I had never been so sure of
anything in my life. Looking up to meet the green eyed creature’s eyes, I quietly whisper to it, “Stay away from my brothers
and sisters. Take me and leave them be.”
In that moment, time seemed to stop as the devil whispered into my ear, “You already know my name… now say it….”
An indefinite amount of time passes…
I blink open my eyes and find my family surrounding me. My head was pounding and I couldn’t remember anything that had
just happened. Natalie was… Natalie was crying…
I move to reach my hand up to her, but wince as I do. With a frown Elle gently placed the back of her hand against my
forehead saying, “Do not move, you’ll strain your injuries.”
I feel someone place their hand over mine softly, casting my gaze over to see Estelle.
“It’s alright Elle.” I say whilst raising a hand to pat Natalie’s head softly, she was laying on my chest crying, I had worried
her…
Just as I’m about to speak words of apologies Amelia pipes up, “Allan, what happened to you? We heard your scream and
ran over, but wha-”
My sister’s sentence falls short when I interrupt her, but it wasn’t me talking. I couldn’t move and yet I was sitting up on
my own.
“The demon attacked me. Did something to me, I can’t remember… I’m sorry.” I say in a tone of voice that was slightly
off from my usual. It sounded sharper, more alert. I try to call out but my words equal to nothing, my mouth not even
working leaving them to remain thoughts. Despite the silence, a voice responds to my call, the voice of the devil in me.
“Your body, and soul now belong to me, but I will allow you to keep your mind.” states the demon.
“Let me go!” I exclaim trying to take control of my body, but my efforts were futile. The demon had me in it’s grasp
and it wasn’t letting me go. I wouldn’t give up though, and eventually, I felt something wrap around me causing me to
quiet down. The familiar sound of chains clinked as they wrapped around me causing my conscious to drift into a dream
like state. I didn’t know what was happening, but I didn’t particularly care anymore.
I just watched as my siblings helped me up and took me into the woods. We were camping out until the guards came to
tell us it was safe to return home, but that wouldn’t be for at least three months time.
It was all a waiting game now.
At the camp several things happened, and by the end of the first month the demon had full control over me. I could no
longer do anything without it’s permission, only watch my siblings as they worried for me. During our fights, my powers
would start to get out of control and I would have episodes of violence attacking anything nearby.
Eventually, the constant struggles had forced my siblings to tie me up in fear of me hurting myself. Last time, I had nearly
fallen off a cliff into the river. If Drake hadn’t caught me, I would have died, and all in due course we returned to the
palace where later in the future, a war would take place between the demon in me, and my family, bringing calamity and
sorrows to the kingdom.
It was impossible to know who would win The Devil’s War, but I prayed that it would be my family, and that peace would be
restored to all the lands.
