Ella smiled a little at the way the tone of Alastair's words turned into that of a storyteller, even while his voice went hushed and secretive. "The story began..." She once more had to focus upon maintaining a neutral expression when Hope was mentioned. Of course she had known, or apparently falsely believed, that he had been captured in Thrinton but to have him here in the Palace... Well, there would be no doubt that had they come into contact Hope would recognise her, and who knew what his time in the more brutal province could have done to his ability to keep quiet. Her entire cover could have been blown and she would be executed, or worse. A traitor so close to the heart of the royal family would have to be given some sort of special treatment, some horrible death. Perhaps they would hand her over to Thrinton, subjecting her to that ‘diversity of inhumane atrocities’ that Alastair was referring to. Would Alastair still be so disappointed in their methods if the person being tortured had betrayed him so personally?
She nodded in understanding as the Prince spoke of the Onetians calling for Hope’s execution. He talked as if it was moral to call for a life to be ended to save it from torture, rather than just calling for the torture to be stopped. Perhaps killing was kinder than torture, but it was still murder, it was still evil, and once Hope had been executed he was beyond saving. An execution would have meant Arrietta had no chance of getting her father back and Sam would have lost a son. It would have protected the rebels though, and she supposed the Onetians had no choice but to condemn the traitor or become one themselves.

As Alastair described how he had essentially tricked the Emperor, Ella couldn't help but forget her horror at the fact they were discussing someone so close to her role as a rebel and instead feel impressed and then, of course, guilty once more. She reminded herself carefully that she couldn’t show either of those emotions. His efforts made sense to her as a rebel, but to the law-abiding seamstress turned princess they could not. She had to stick to her role for just a short while more.
”That seems very chivalrous, and I’m truly glad that I don’t have to watch an execution today.” She didn’t have to disguise how horrible she found executions, it was reasonable for anyone to dislike watching someone lose their head. ”But I don’t understand. He was a traitor. Why not just let him get executed? Why save this specific one?”
She was desperately snatching at anything, trying to suss out the Prince’s motivation. It wouldn’t be long until she was freed from the palace, she’d return home and be able to see her family and her friends for more than a quick status report and that was all she had wanted from the moment she stepped into the Palace of Swords. But she’d lose her chance to figure out this unfathomable Prince, to work out whether she should feel guilty for this betrayal.

As she asked these questions they reached the waterfall, a beautiful feat of nature that served as the Prince’s sanctuary and would hopefully also serve to drown out the footsteps of her rebel friends approaching. Carefully Ella shook out the fabric at the top of the basket and laid it on the ground in front of where Alastair had already sat on the grass. She sat on the picnic blanket with her legs tucked beneath her, this would probably be her last taste of Onetian finery for a while and even with her thoughts taken up with worry over the next few hours there was no way she was getting it grass-stained and ruined. As she laid the food out in front of them she glanced round at the trees surrounding the clearing where, all going well, the Phoenix squad would eventually be hidden. She gave herself just a moment to worry about the safety of Lanette and the other young rebels before turning and smiling at Alastair. ”The food’s all ready!” And with that her wait began.

⋯⋯⋯⋯❄️⋯⋯⋯⋯
After a good night’s sleep and a great number of hugs from Onyx, Brenn had mostly recovered from the ordeal of their first mission. Now he could worry about the mission they were heading to now. It had been a fair shock to him to find out that the ‘important mission’ Atlanta had referred to was capturing the Prince of Delra. It wasn’t exactly what the ice-wielder had expected from his second ever mission but he supposed the rebels living underground had waited 18 years for the Phoenix Squad to be ready to free Delra, Brenn could hardly expect them to wait until he was no longer terrified.

As they journeyed towards Oneta on the train, the squad organised themselves into groups. Alpha to attack, Beta to capture and Omega to help smuggle the Prince away. Fear of this royal with some unknown power guided him towards Team Omega but, as usual, his mother’s lessons rang in his mind as if she were next to him. “A true and honourable rebel can always be found at the front lines. You must never hide away behind your comrades. Be happy to face danger, my little fireballs, knowing that you’ll be helping to save Delra.” Brenn sighed and steeled himself to join team Alpha before recalling something else from his lesson that day. His father was a Fivanian, but though happy to talk non-stop Aiden Lucasta shied away from conflict. Though it was always clear that he disapproved of Ceri teaching their two young children the way of ‘a true and honourable rebel’ he rarely spoke up against it, but that lesson he had disagreed. ”They’re not going to be saving anyone if they go where they’re not helpful.” He’d told their mother, sounding frustrated. Turning to Brenn and Seren he continued to speak, more gently. ”Don’t go charging in without thinking, find the place you can be of most use and stay there. If you know your strengths and your limits you can help no matter how far from the danger you are.”
It was a lesson his mother never did learn. Had she listened perhaps she wouldn’t have ended with her head on the chopping block, but now it brought Brenn to think carefully. He was pitiful at melee fighting and hardly very intimidating but his ice-powers would be able to do much to help smuggle the Prince onto a train. No, it would have to be Team Beta. Gavotte had chosen the same, and though they weren't neccessarily friends their complementary powers certainly made them into excellent fighting companions. He was pleased to find that Onyx would also be joining them, where they could have each others backs. Brenn trusted his friend and roommate with his life, and would unthinkingly defend them with it too.

They arrived at the station, and once again Brenn was in awe. Oneta was starkly different from Fivana, all white marble and peace where he’d previously stepped into bright neon light and excitement. It was no less beautiful, if perhaps a little more boring. When Atlanta offered out the walkie-talkies after leading them into a dense forest, Brenn shrugged his shoulders. ”I can take it if nobody else wants to.” He said, glancing round at the rest of Team Beta. ”But I’ll probably be better off if I don’t have to worry about fiddling around with it.” He knew that if he used his ability for more than a short period of time he’d probably end up with numb hands and using a walkie-talkie when he couldn’t feel his fingers didn’t sound like the easiest of tasks. He listened carefully as Atlanta gave them a refresher as to each Team’s role. Brenn’s pair of power cancelling handcuffs hung from his belt and he once again wondered what the Prince’s powers actually were. It was odd that the intelligence department hadn't even found a single clue, surely the royal family’s abilities would be even stronger than normal, or at least what would be normal, and they'd flaunt them to show their strength. But no, no one truly had any idea just how dangerous this mission could be.

A quick glance at the map Atlanta brought out was enough to remind him of the sequence of steps he’d managed to memorise, after studying it over and over with everyone else on the train. When both Sonata and Gavotte came up with extra methods of navigation Brenn nodded earnestly, looking impressed.
”That’ll be way easier than just trying to remember which direction we’re facing.” He was looking at Sonata’s little sunflower as he spoke before turning to Gavotte. The water-wielder had only mumbled his idea, but since Brenn was standing with the majority of Team Beta he had heard it. ”And that means we’ll be able to make sure we’re on the right track.” Though nervous himself, Brenn wanted to encourage his squad mates. Especially Gavotte, who seemed to have dipped in confidence, the complete opposite of Sonata. Onyx rapidly spotted the first marker on their path, allowing their walk to begin, and Brenn moved over to intentionally bump into them. "Quick eyes there, Onyx!"

xxxxxxxxxxxcujo y.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ^ alpha & beta
xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ^ medic

The male blinked a little bit, eyes skimming across the others in the group for a brief moment before looking at himself. He hadn't been able to assist with anything in a while and it was just now that he was able to return from his home. His younger sibling had been sick, and he needed to be home to help with them, or at least to keep them company in more trying times. He could feel his usual smile starting to pull down at the corners but he mentally shook it off a little bit, instead listening to the others in the group while examining the forest scenery. Seeing all of the beautiful greens mottling together along with the thought of finally getting to help his team fixed his previously souring mood into something a little better.

Though, he took a moment to properly examine the plant life surrounding them, looking for different herbs and such that could prove as natural remedies for infections and such (despite his bag of supplies that he carried about). Feeling a twinge in his leg though, he scrunched his nose up at the familiar feeling before glancing towards Naevys. (Cujo could merely hope that his roommate would be doing alright.) Of course, he'd be going along with team Alpha in order to give support on the frontlines rather than simple support in the backlines. After all, scuffles could definitely ensue from a task of such a large caliber. Knowing that he needed to give medical support to those most prone to danger, he followed along with those whom were joining the Alpha group. If he got into a fight as well, as long as it were merely physical rather than a contest of abilities, he surely wouldn't be at too much of a disadvantage.

Listening to the girl mention the concept of a flower compass, the brunet nodded along, looking over at the map with mild curiosity before eyeing everyone around him once more. He couldn't think of any input for the time being, but he could certainly sit there, be mentally present, and occasionally look at the plant-life for anything of possible use to himself personally.

Apollo Torres ♦ Pan ♦ Fire Manipulation
Location: Oneta ♦ Tags: Team Omega

Apollo huffed when the Commander told his group they were "free to explore." He didn't want to be the backup. It felt like a waist of his talents. He was only on Team Omega because this was part of his punishment for his temper backstage. It hadn't been like he enjoyed threatening Caleb, just that the animal kid had been in his way. He was a little glad to be with Ardai. Apollo wasn't about to admit he'd missed the trickster, though. He hadn't. He was just jealous- No. He was angry that he hadn't been able to go with the squad on their first mission. Based on how he heard it went, Apollo thought he could've helped. Maybe kept Ardai from loosing his sight, or Jen from...

He shook the thought away. Sure, Jen was just as firey as he was but the idea of her doing that seemed...unreal. He watched Ardai almost skip forward towards Lanette and couldn't help but smile. Apollo was glad someone enjoyed the skirt. It just reminded him of painful things. Adjusting his teal suit jacket, before finally just leaving it unbuttoned, he considered burning or tearing the skirt shorter.

"Food first," He grumbled, putting his hands in his pockets. "I ain't wandering this place on an empty stomach. 'Specially if Beta screws up and we need to cover for them." Apollo gently set a hand on Ardai as he stepped up next to him, wanting the trickster to know where he was.

Sonata Thornwood
Plant manipulation
Tags: Teams Alpha/Beta

-----Sonata was pleasantly surprised when Jen, and then Brenn, both approved of her suggestion. Cujo had nodded at her too. They liked her idea and wanted to use it! A red blush spread across her freckled face as she managed an awkward, "Thank you!"
-----Although she felt closer with Brenn considering their mission together, it was the first time she'd successfully said anything to Jennifer. Ironic, considering the timid brunette had heard about the situation at the Sanctuary. Brutal as it was, Sonata couldn't exactly blame the fire-wielder. The thought of James, that awful traitor who'd murdered Caleb and laughed, made her think Jen's victim probably deserved it. Sonata had little compassion for horrible, traitorous killers.
-----Being terrible with reading social situations, she didn't realize Naevys was talking to her at first. Some part of her (definitely the part with low self-esteem) believed he was too smart to initiate a conversation with a bumbling klutz. He was probably talking to someone behind her.
-----Only when Jade shot back with an irritated tone did Sonata figure it out. "Oh, um! I guess I'm a bit nervous? But it's a lot less than last time, haha, and..." She wrapped an arm around Jade, hoping the show of affection would placate her small wolverine of a friend. "I have my personal bodyguard with me now!"

Gavotte Lane
Water manipulation
Tags: Teams Alpha/Beta

-----The water-manipulator hadn't even noticed the sunflower until Jen pointed it out, along with her idea of how to combine powers for navigation. He hadn't thought of pulling water from the surroundings, but that was a good idea. "Sounds good," He told the blonde, and immediately focused on his surroundings to scout for water.
-----His wariness of her was beginning to wear off, along with the shock of the incident as a whole. After a sleepless night spent replaying the scene in his head, he came to the realization that maybe, just maybe, she overreacted to protect him. It was an optimistic assumption and he wasn't quite an optimist, but it made the brutal murder at the Sanctuary a little more palatable. Just a little.
-----He nodded at Brenn in agreement, then narrowed his eyes as Onyx immediately called dibs on arresting the prince, but his expression shifted to one of approval as they explained why. Good reasoning. "I'll keep him distracted. It won't be difficult considering all the water I'll have available," He offered.
-----Onyx began approaching an intersection of entangled branches, which Gavotte keenly recalled from the shakily redrawn map. The brunette hadn't noticed the landmark at first, although it seemed painfully obvious now.
-----"Looks like we're off to a good start, then," He told Onyx, a smile beginning to appear on his face.

Atlanta Hunter
Phoenix Commander
Tags: Teams Alpha/Beta

-----Fair to say, the commander was incredibly proud of the team for making so many suggestions. Even Jen was pitching in with her ideas. It seemed the others were happy about that - hopefully this would spark the beginning of some true friendships for the lonesome archer.
-----Naevys was the one from Team Alpha who took the walkie-talkie, and Atlanta gave him an approving smile. "Of course I trust you. You've proven yourself more than enough, Naevys." For what little he lacked in physical ability, he more than made up for it with determination, wit, and overall being a good teammate.
-----She pretended not to notice Onyx's gulp of unease. The team would do just fine. Even as the thought passed her mind, the black-haired acrobat was already scouting out an unusual branch formation. A glance at the map confirmed that, yes, these were the first markers to point their way forward.
-----Atlanta didn't say a word, but smiled and began following behind Onyx. Sonata, who was standing nearby with Jade and Naevys, seemed to get the hint that they were moving on. The sunflower closed its petals and shriveled back into a regular vine as the plant manipulator covered her tracks.

Lanette Lane
Pacifism
Tags: Team Omega

-----The thought of studying hadn't entered Lanette's mind, but dutiful Caleb brought it up. Her expression lit up at the suggestion. Learning was both a fun experience and crucial to their future missions. The more they knew, the better they would handle what Delra threw at them. Plus, Caleb was right. It was only fair they gathered some 'intelligence' while their teammates were off fighting royalty.
-----"That's a brilliant idea. We could head to the library after we pick up some food," She suggested. "Unless there's a better option than the library? If it's royal secrets we're after, a public library might not have them."
-----Apollo reaffirmed that food was their first priority, and Lanette nodded in agreement as her own stomach emitted a growl. Despite the excitement of an unfamiliar province, first things first. They wouldn't learn anything if their minds were preoccupied with hunger.
-----"I think the street is this way." Lanette led the way through the rising hallway of the station. Her eyes were drawn to the elegant spires of white marble, intertwining at the intricately painted ceiling. The mural appeared to show a wounded Onetian swordsperson, their elegant cape having fallen over them to hide the worst of their injuries. A towering, broad-shouldered spearwoman - a Twodorian - stood protectively between the hurt Onetian and the looming army ahead.
-----A monument to the friendship between the two provinces, maybe?

Ardai Fairchild
Invisibility
Tags: Team Omega

-----A deeper voice spoke up, proposing ideas that made the redheaded prankster grimace in disgust. Caleb was suggesting something downright nasty and truly evil. Education.
-----But wait. He could escape this! Thanks to his good friend, Leroy the Traitor doing him a favor, he had the perfect excuse to get away from studying. Blind people couldn't read, and Ardai in particular had never learned Braille. (Of course not. He never expected to go blind, did he?)
-----"I don't see the fun in that," He said with a huge grin, which only widened as he felt a familiar strong hand on his arm. It was Apollo, who agreed with him that food came before boring ol' studying. Finally, someone reasonable on this mission!
-----"Thanks, man. Yeah, does this place have chicken? I want to taste some real meat," He said in a surprisingly quiet tone for a loudmouth. What if Onetians were all vegan and took offense? Better safe than sorry.
-----Ardai followed in the direction of Lanette's voice, noticing how their footsteps echoed in the hall. Must be a big hall. The reverberating sound of every step made him aware of the creepy silence that otherwise blanketed this place. A shiver went down his back - hopefully the streets were a little more homely than this.
-----He was a little too excited to leave the station, however, and walked right into something. "Ow, rude," Ardai scolded the pillar he'd just smashed facefirst into. He rubbed his aching nose, then attempted to feel his way around the pillar with his hands. Hopefully no Onetians saw him making a fool of himself.

(I'll post for Alastair tomorrow!)
