"thanks." Sam said as he drank the water she gave him. in response to her question he answered, "well i can't just survive entirely on a meal of fruit and berries, thanks for leaving some by the way, so i though i might try to catch some fish for lunch. though the only way i'm going to get a fishing line here is to make one myself." he offered her some of the other fruit he brought down and continued his work.

I ate the fruit he offered. "Can I help with anything? I've never fished like that before. Usually we just swim after them, since they, you know, live kinda with us." I watched fascinated as he worked.

Sam gave a small chuckle. "yeah humans aren't that fast or graceful in the water. i was taught how to swim by getting tossed off the boat." he thought for a minute. "well...i'll need bait. so if you don't mind looking for worms..." she was a girl, and Sam knew all the girls he'd met hated worms. so she might not want to do that. "if you don't want to i think i can figure out something else for you to do."

I nodded and stood up. "I can get worms. There should be plenty in the damp soil here." I made a face. "I never got why fish would like to eat them." I shrugged and started digging through the dirt near some of the undergrowth. "I suppose when your only other options are bugs and whatever other muck you'd find near water, a worm might sound pretty good." I cocked a half grin at Sam "Thank goodness for berries."

Sam blinked for a moment, suprised she actually didn't mind. "yeah i guess so. i don't think i could eat worms even if i was starving." he replied as he continued with his vine. it was down to the soft, bendable center now and looked just right for an improvision of string. "you know, you're the first girl i've ever met that didn't squeal at the thought of touching worms." he said with a smile.

I gave him a confused smile. "Really? I guess maybe since I'm also a siren...I don't know we live in the water and there's a bunch of gross stuff in there..." I dropped another worm onto the leaf that already held a few others.

"i guess but still." Sam shrugged and set his vine down. he stood up and started looking around the tree roots. "now i read in a book once that Native Americans used to make their own hooks out of tree roots. i just hope i can." he said and picked up a sharp looking rock. it would have to do in place of a knife for now. he found a surdy looking tree root and used the rock to start cutting it off.

I half watched him curiously and half watched the dirt I was digging through. "What are Native Americans? Are they a different species?" I'd never heard another human mention them.

"well, i come from a place called America and before all the settlers from another place called Europe came the land was inhabited by other people we now call 'Native Americans', because they were the first in America." Sam explained. "they were really good at living off the land using only things they could make by hand in the forests and grasslands." now that the root was cut off he started to slowly shape it into a hook.

Athenos gave a light laugh. "no it's quite alright. i like talking to people." he replied. he always found it a little amusing that everyone made such a fuss about him when they realized he was a prince. listening to her words a bit he smiled and replied, "well i think that's as good a reason to travel as any. i've only visited a few places off the indian ocean. how long have you been traveling?"

As the white silkie's tail casually drifted down, the white pearls twinkled pleasantly. Well, if he wanted to be treated a little less than royalty, okay. But she still had to try to be formal, right? "Thank you... Well," Her thick white tail swayed slightly as she thought. "A good while now. A good full moon's pass, I think. It's hard to keep track, the daylight and moonlight hours change the further I came down." She blushed as she realized her babbling, and stuck her skinny arms down and twitched her fingers, playing with her rings to distract herself from speaking further.
