RUNNING

- Two rival wolf packs had always been in a state of perpetual turmoil since their formation. They utterly despised the opposition for various reasons, and even the most trivial and diminutive things could initiate a fight. The Pack of Rising Dawn hated the Pack of Fallen Dusk for its somewhat cruel practices to toughen their pups, and the Pack of Fallen Dusk denounced the Pack of Rising Dawn as useless, pathetic weaklings. The battles were not usually fatal, however, which was quite fortunate.
But soon, that all changed. The time of plentiful prey was drawing to a close, and resources were dreadfully scarce for both packs. War immediately broke out, and at first, the Pack of Fallen Dusk was winning. Eventually, the Pack of Rising Dawn began to develop gifts, drawing powers from the elements; fire, air, water, and earth. They enjoyed a short and fleeting glimpse of victory before the Pack of Fallen Dusk also obtained gifts, but they were different, more like enhancements of normal wolf skills. The war lasted for four generations - both packs were almost completely obliterated, with the exception of about twelve wolves in the Pack of Rising Dawn and six in the Pack of Fallen Dusk.
The Pack of Fallen Dusk held a strong belief that it was unfair for the Pack of Rising Dawn to have twice as many wolves, and they retaliated in an attempt to seek justice. The last battle was a bloodbath, and the Pack of Rising Dawn was triumphant; they retained all their members, while the Pack of Fallen Dusk was left with merely four.
A peace treaty was announced, and both packs were given time to recover, although the gifts were all lost over time. The Pack of Fallen Dusk refined its ruthless and often violent training techniques, and they became increasingly stronger, until they had miraculously expanded to double the size of the Pack of Rising Dawn. Terrified that the heartless members of the Pack of Fallen Dusk would attack, the Pack of Rising Dawn decided to strike, in an attempt to reduce their adversaries' population.
The second great war was longer than the first, with no gifts to help either side. There were no survivors, apart from a few newborn pups still in the den. Five in the Pack of Rising Dawn, and three in the Pack of Fallen Dusk. Whilst the pups from the Pack of Rising Dawn received elemental gifts the instant they opened their eyes for the first time, daily survival was a struggle for the young pups of the Pack of Fallen Dusk.
Fortunately, were partially adopted by a mysterious wolf who called himself Mentor; he taught the youngsters their heritage and history, and made sure they neither lived a soft life nor perished. Mentor never took sides, and told the pups only facts, not opinionated half-truths. Still, the young wolves began to feel anger and resentment towards the Pack of Rising Dawn, and planned to murder every single one of them for what their ancestors did. As their desire for vengeance developed, Mentor told them to follow their heart's desires. Obviously, the three decided to kill the Pack of Rising Dawn, and they took Mentor along.
The Pack of Rising Dawn was completely bewildered when the first attack was launched; they were being blamed for their ancestors' actions. They fled, after one of them accidentally struck Mentor with lightning, killing him instantly. The three were devastated by their surrogate father's death and vowed to avenge him and the rest of their slain packmates by hunting down the five members of the Pack of Rising Dawn, and murdering all of them.
The five elemental survivors knew it was purely accidental, but there was no reasoning with the Pack of Fallen Dusk now. The chase, which takes place in Canada, has continued for a year now and shows no sign of stopping. Will peace ever come?
