Her body stiffened, alert, as the stranger abandoned her submissive posture. Then, the question she'd hoped wouldn't come up did come up. Can we at least have her body? It made Nightfire feel sick to her stomach, knowing that the skittish apprentice was probably safe and sound back at camp. However, she wouldn't let that stop her from doing what needed to be done. "Not cruel - just savvy," she replied, voice as calm as ever. "I'm sorry, but even you must understand that I can't simply let two outsiders into my territory with no questions asked. Frankly, I don't trust you." She went quiet, still staring awkwardly at the outsiders while she waited for them to take the hint and leave. She still felt horrible, but why? It didn't matter to her where she or her own packmates would be buried. What was the logic in fussing about it when it didn't affect anything but where dirt was thrown over their corpses? Thinking this, she added, "You don't need to worry about her anymore. It isn't as if she'll know where she's been buried."

Reedpaw watched the interaction, eyes wide with shock. Dead? No. But it all made sense. Of course the bear had gotten Foxpaw too, she alone never could've escaped. He felt a stab of outrage, however, at Nightfire's refusal to give them the dead medicine apprentice's body. What? That's totally unfair, would they even bury her? And she's a medicine dog, she's in Starpack, I bet she does know- Oh. He looked down suddenly. They had no use for her body, especially with Bramblestream's bad leg. They'd have to bind it in something or other to staunch the blood, and keep walking. There was no way they'd carry Foxpaw all the way up that cliff alone.

Bramblestream hid her inner frustration over a calm expression as she turned to face the husky. Her bright honey eyes gleamed with her irritation as she spoke. "She may not know where she is buried but her family will. The last thing River Pack would want is one of their kin to be buried in the territory of such inhospitable dogs," she said coolly. The spaniel stood tall despite only being on three legs. She didn't know Foxpaw all that well but her pack was her family and she wouldn't leave without the medicine dog apprentice. "Frankly, I don't trust you, either," she replied softly, stifling her temper. She was in position for a fight but she would not back down. "You bring us the body so we can be sure she's dead and we won't go anywhere near Sky Pack territory ever again," she bargained, taking a seat with her bad leg splayed out. "I won't be going anywhere until you get back," she added with a nod to her gnarled leg. She could feel her pulse in the muscles of her leg but she hid her pain well in the darkness.

"I still don't understand why it matters," she replied, dryer than a bone. "And that 'inhospitality' to which you refer is basic caution that you're actively choosing to take personally." Despite her words, the other she-dog continued. Her brow began to furrow as they reacted differently than she'd anticipated, sending an icy chill through her veins. She decided to be as logical as possible so they wouldn't try to argue back. "I am not doing anything that requires you to trust me. I cannot and will not risk you two doing anything stupid just to fish a corpse from my Pack's own sacred memorial for the sake of yours, especially when you're unlikely to be capable of scaling the cliff alone, never mind with an additional body." In the heat of her argument, she said before she could consider the connotation, "Besides, I have no assurance that you'll take better care of the poor thing now than you did while she was alive. If it's any consolation, I can describe the pup to you: Red-furred, bushy-tailed, scrawny, looked terrified and lonesome even in death. Satisfied yet?" For some reason, to her own ears, those last remarks she made really...stung. More so than her others. Regardless, they still weren't moving, and the beta was beginning to lose her patience. She stalked forward on stiff legs, close enough to reach the outsiders. With a swift jerk of her head, she snapped at Bramblestream's face. Her teeth didn't close around any skin or flesh, but the firm, loud click they made as they slammed back together with considerable force was certainly startling if nothing else. More importantly, though, it was a very clear warning. Eyes locked on the older intruder's, she growled softly, "Leave. I won't say it again." Her elegant muscles tensed as she waited for either retaliation or compliance.

A growl escaped from under her breath as the husky snapped at her. Instinctively her hackles rose and she felt the tips of her ears grow hot. Something didn't sit right with Bramblestream but there was no fighting with this dog and obviously no getting through to her. "Okay," Bramblestream said, her eyes furious and body rigid. She turned her back to the other dog, tail straight out and walked past Reedpaw toward home. She expected the apprentice to follow and didn't say another word. She limped slowly out of Sky Pack territory until she was near the edge of the forest and the cliff face loomed above them. The husky mix only fueled the fire in Bramblestream and although she was in no shape to fight, she would give her life to protect her family. She had just the slightest suspicion that Foxpaw was still alive and that was enough for her. The spaniel grit her teeth as she began limping around the arc of the forest edge farther north. The scent of Sky Pack was strong and as long as she could keep the smell on her right side, she knew she was going the right way. If they could take a roundabout way to sneak into the territory, the two river pack dogs could perhaps weasel into the territory undetected. Bramblestream, however, didn't put it past that husky to follow them to ensure they were trully leaving. So as a last measure, she whined softly and slowly lowered herself to the ground. "My leg, Reedpaw. It's my leg" she whimpered, loudly and high-pitched. Her leg did hurt and the pain only grew the longer it dangled while she walked. However it didn't bleed or hurt enough to kill her. Yet. Still, she lay as still as she could, taking small labored breaths to ensure that if the husky was watching, she would be satisfied to see Bramblestream practically dead.

She remained unimpressed as the she-dog adopted a furious posture, rigid and practically radiating fury, though Nightfire still couldn't fully imagine why she was taking it this seriously. She watched the shapes grow smaller on the horizon, and then it hit her. She wouldn't dare try to sneak in another way...would she? With no backup, they still wouldn't stand a chance. They'd have to be completely stupid to try to...

Nightfire sighed and began to follow them. She traveled on their left, downwind of them, keeping the injured pair within her sight. She didn't see a need to hurt them just to encourage them. Instead, she'd just make sure that they made it up the cliff and past the bear territory; at that point, it would be foolish, dangerous, and counterproductive to turn back, even for dogs as adamant as them. Abruptly, as she stepped over a familiar log to avoid making sound in her pursuit of the outsiders, Bramblestream slowly collapsed to the ground. Nightfire blinked and recoiled, stunned. Did she just die? Her paws began moving on their own accord, towards the body, before the beta forced herself to become still to preserve her stealth. She couldn't believe it. The injury hadn't seemed that grave. Regardless, Nightfire started to feel nauseous again, revolted, for some peculiar reason, at the idea that another dog had died when capable medicine dogs were so close by. Narrowing her eyes in disbelief, she remained rooted to the spot, waiting for any sign of movement. They had no reason to suspect she was there - she'd been perfectly quiet while following in her complete familiarity with the terrain - beyond, perhaps, their own personal distrust of her, so she could remain there indefinitely and they wouldn't know when, or if, she left.

Reedpaw stopped, and stooped over Bramblestream, but immediately realized she was faking. He could clearly see her breathing though she tried to hide it. Nevertheless, he played along, frantically licking her, and speaking without moving his lips. "What's wrong?" Reedpaw, however, had a pretty good feeling he knew why. Bramblestream was determined to get Foxpaw's body. He dreaded thinking it, but the retriever knew: there was no, no way they could bring Foxpaw back.

Despite herself, her ears began to flatten. She really couldn't tell if they were faking it or not. She was tempted to go check, but she feared that they'd set this up; perhaps an ambush would catch her if she went out into the open. Then again, though, they'd already had her alone and she'd been left unharmed. There didn't seem like much reason to kill her out here instead of near SkyPack land; it wasn't as if her Pack would be less likely to retaliate in the case that she went missing instead of becoming the obvious victim of murder. She took a cautious whiff of the air. She didn't smell any other dogs. Of course, that could be a result of them hiding, as she'd suspected, but it also indicated that there was enough room in between her and them to get away if this backfired. She was confident she'd be faster than any RiverPack dog. She took a deep breath and squared her shoulders as she exited her hiding place in the shrubbery and approached the downed dog. As she got closer, alerting them of her presence with light, determined footfalls, it occurred to her that they more than likely knew nothing of SkyPack culture. She could say anything and it would be perfectly believable to them. So, hoping to call their bluff, she said, "I wouldn't want to disrespect this honorable warrior by leaving her body here. Stand back, apprentice; I must make the customary slash in her throat and bury her where she lay." If this didn't rouse the she-dog, Nightfire was prepared to investigate for a pulse, but, if Bramblestream was alive, bending down and pressing the side of her head into her throat was rendering herself vulnerable to a free attack; she wanted to avoid it if she could.

She flicked his ears lightly "You did? I see I guess I didn't hear it" she said looking at her "so What are you going to do now? are you planning to get back to your...um pack? If you even know where that is?" she said to her.

Reedpaw nearly jumped out of his fur, and backed up several spaces. "Wait, what!?" His eyes wide, Reedpaw watched in horror as the strange dog approached his mentor, clearly gauging the best moment to strike. "Please don't!" Reedpaw yelped, stepping forward slightly, unsure of what to do.
