The Final Exile wrote: Mossypaw flicked his tail in anger. He couldn't help but feel like Stealthvixen's death was his fault. If he had been with her .. listening to a story, grooming her fur .. he growled and got to his feet, padding outside of the now empty apprentice's den.
"Kestrelstar?"
The she-cat looked up, seeing the tom now standing beside her, "Yes, Mossypaw?"
He looked down at his paws, frowning profusely, "Would it be alright if I buried Stealthvixen myself? I feel like I owe it to her."
Kestrelstar eyed Mossypaw, her gaze softening the longer she looked, "You may," she nodded her head, and as he started to turn away, she added. "And I'm very sorry .. I know how much she meant to the apprentices."
Mossypaw stopped and nodded, teeth clenched, "Yeah."
Stealthvixen's now cold body fastened into his teeth, Mossypaw lugged her out of camp to bury her. He muttered something under his breath about how heavy she was, though it was muffled by the dark orange fur in his mouth.
"Alright," Mossypaw meowed, breathing heavy as he let go of Stealthvixen. "It's ti- oh."
He looked at the sharp stick that protruded out of her bloody neck, wincing, "Let me take that out for you," he decided, delicately taking the tip of the stick in his teeth and pulling.
Panic filled Mossypaw's eyes as blood spurted out of the now open wound, trying to cover it with his paws. He lost his balance as blood made its way into his eyes, falling backwards and blindly fumbling around until ... splash! The now blood covered tom fell into the stream between ThunderClan and WindClan, head dunking underwater as he fought for his life; vision completely obscured, Mossypaw refused to give up, kicking and twisting in the cold water. Not knowing how to swim, Mossypaw eventually stopped as the cold soaked into his bones, freezing his muscles. A gurgle escaped his mouth, forming small bubbles at the surface .. and no more.
--
Concern and rising dread filled Kestrelstar's mind the longer Mossypaw stayed away from camp, "Harrierheart," she called, seeing the tom pass by.
"Yes?" he meowed, turning to his sister.
"I - I know it sounds silly, but I think Mossypaw may be in trouble. He went out to bury Stealthvixen awhile ago and isn't back .."
Harrierheart frowned, placing his tail comfortingly on his sister's shoulder, "I could take a search party."
"Please."
Harrierheart, followed by Ebonyrose and Minnowfur, padded through the forest in search for the apprentice
"Mossypaw! Mossypaw!" the group called out, both Ebonyrose and Minnowfur looking especially worried for their kin.
"No!" Minnowfur suddenly gasped, calling attention to the rest of the group. As the two looked over, they saw Minnowfur hunched over her brother's washed up, dead body.
Ebonyrose's mouth fell open, body tensing up, "Not my baby ..." she joined her daughter beside the body, comforting her with her tail as she whimpered.
"I'm so sorry ..." Harrierheart whispered, glancing around the area for any evidence of how the tom could have fallen in the stream. He walked around in confusion, until he came across bloody footprints. "Guys, this may be important."
The two slowly looked up, sadly making their way over to him, "What?" Ebonyrose sighed.
"Footprints," Minnowfur finished, beginning to follow them immediately. "Stealthvixen ..." she meowed after awhile.
Harrierheart, at her tail, frowned, "There's blood. Everywhere."
"And the stick is on the ground," Ebonyrose added, confusion filling her gaze. "But how did Mossypaw ..."
"Shock, from the blood, I'd imagine," Harrierheart made his guess, placing his tail on Stealthvixen's body. "I'm very sorry," he meowed as if he was speaking to her, and in turn, Mossypaw. "Let's bury them and return to camp."
--
"Mossypaw has, while attempting to bury Stealthvixen, passed away," Kestrelstar announced to the Clan, still shaken from the tale the search party had told her. "As a gift for his honor, we shall give him his warrior name, and allow him to enter StarClan as Mossyleaf. May Stealthvixen help you find your way."
Meows from the few cats left echoed what everyone was thinking: who had killed Stealthvixen?
"Of course," Kestrelstar sighed, regret in her tone. She hated this part of every recent meeting, an exile, "Who?"
Wigeonpaw.
"Wigeonpaw?" Kestrelstar looked confused, after all, he was only an apprentice. And a medicine cat apprentice at that.
A look of pure anger came over the apprentice's face, "NO! Don't ruin StarClan's plans!"
Kestrelstar looked now even more confused, "Excuse me?"
"You CAN'T ruin StarClan's plans!"
The sky became dark ...
"You can't!! They sent me to do this! They told me so, in a vision!"
"Are you sure .." Hollyhop meowed cautiously.
Wigeonpaw turned to glare at her, "I'm sure. Just because you're older doesn't mean you know better. That's probably why they didn't tell you, in fact. They knew you couldn't do it. But I'M superior. And I WILL finish their plans!"
A loud rumble echoed through camp ...
"Wigeonpaw .." Twistedthorn began. "Are you sure?" he gestured toward the sky, a look of concern in his eyes.
"I'm su-!"
A flash of light blinded everyone ...
"Where'd Wigeonpaw go?" Hollyhop looked around in fear, moving close to Twistedthorn.
"There," Harrierheart pointed at a pile of burnt mess. "He's there."
Kestrelstar brought everycat together, her gaze narrowed on the mess, "I don't believe he will be finishing anyone's plans .."
StarClan has smitten the murderer. You win, ThunderClan!
