"starclan has lost faith in us. we are what remains of a broken clan." the three cats around her had their heads hung low. salmonblaze had eyes filled with sorrow. little crane-eye, too young for her name, looked ready to wail endlessly at the sun and the stars. apricotbreeze was trembling, clearly devastated by the seasons of loss.
there was hardly anything left. four young mollies left to survive with a killer in their midst and a pitiful if not non-existent source of food. "i will not bother to appoint a new deputy. for now, thunderclan must rest. we will not regain our numbers by looking shiftily at our paws and avoiding each other. tomorrow, we hunt."
thunderclan was silent for a long while. halfstar, her back turned, swished her tail impatiently from side to side. when she was finally brave enough to speak up, salmonblaze lifted her head and choked out, "my father. we must do something to honor his--"
"that's quite enough out of you!" halfstar spat, stumbling in an attempt to whirl around and slash a claw at the young warrior. when she was finished panting and hissing, she finally met salmonblaze's grieving eyes with a cold green scowl. "for all we know, this could be your doing. you never joined the rest of the clan when we voted. never assisted in investigations. even when you had become a warrior, you hardly patrolled!"
"i-i didn't mean to, i wanted to help, i've been terrified of what might come if i let my guard down!' salmonblaze begged, dropping her chin once more. "please, halfstar, don't..."
"get out of my clan, traitor!"
crane-eye and apricotbreeze clearly didn't want to encourage the yelling match, rising to their feet in what salmonblaze decided was either a defensive position or an attack pose, ready to chase her out at halfstar's next command.
they didn't need to. sobbing and practically mewling like a kitten from the pain in both her heart and her paw pads, she raced away. away from camp, away from thunderclan territory, away from the place she dared to call a home. turned out that rogues outside of clan territories aren't always friendly.
in the warriors' den, the killer watched over her sleeping clanmates and waited.
your killer still lurks. the next kill will decide thunderclan's fate.

it was odd. it felt to apricotbreeze like the reason she'd started all this in the first place hardly mattered anymore. but why AM i still doing this, then? she'd often ask herself, but the thought was always shaken off. maybe she didn't need a reason anymore. emptying the dens just felt freeing in a way. perhaps it really didn't matter that rooksea and the other painfully restricting higher-ups were already gone. apricotbreeze could do something fun just to feel nice. it wasn't like anyone could stop her now.
"starling, rabbit, squirrel, and crow," she muttered under her breath, eyes flitting back and forth between the two dozing she-cats. "snag fox mother by the toe. if she hollers, let her go."
"starling." halfstar.
"rabbit." crane-eye.
"squirrel." halfstar.
"and crow." crane-eye.
she hummed, nose hovering just above the young warrior's twitching whiskers. "what a shame," apricotbreeze rumbled as she bared her teeth. "i suppose the next generation of thunderclan warriors will have to wait a little while. maybe the kittypets who spawned you can hold a vigil for you. it's not like thunderclan will care much for you when i'm through."
well, even if the majority of thunderclan were still alive, she was certain they still wouldn't do much about crane-eye's demise. in fact, during the several seasons it had been since the very first death, apricotbreeze couldn't recall even one vigil that was held. poor crowstar must be slacking. oh, wait.
as the sky grew pale with the light of dawn, apricotbreeze grew impatient. "goodnight, cranekit. it's too bad toadface isn't here to bore you to sleep." without another moment of waiting, she sank her teeth into crane-eye's throat. just another sacrifice i'll have to make. all that blood will just ruin her pretty, white fur.
when the white cat finally stopped struggling to breathe, apricotbreeze released her grip. a cat that young wouldn't survive for long, especially not after she was rid of the other she-cat.

halfstar's eyes popped open. in front of her, a dry, crusted patch of blood staining the moss below. on her neck, a sore scar. just beneath her muzzle, a corpse.
she hauled herself to her feet and out of the den. it was more like a hole now, empty and hollow. in the center of the camp was a familiar patched white and orange pelt. looking over apricotbreeze's shoulder were vacant blue eyes.
"good morning, halfstar," the murderer greeted. "sleep well?"
"like a kitten."
"in other words, like you were buried alive?"
halfstar hobbled forward on her three legs. her eyes were narrowed and set on apricot. ears were pointing outward. whiskers were flat.
apricotbreeze just clicked her teeth at her. "just give up, halfstar. not even your nine-- sorry, eight lives can save you now. you can't boss me around anymore."
she smirked. "no, but i'm willing to bet they can."
waterviper descended from the top of the quarry with a mighty leap. paws first, she barrelled the killer straight into the ground. behind her, cats were following, hopping precariously from ledge to ledge before reaching the very center of camp. while waterviper had apricotbreeze pinned, rosefeather silently ordered the rest of the survivors into a formation, effectively surrounding them.
rosefeather stared down at apricotbreeze in blatant disapproval. at her sides stood sorrelwhisper and ravenwillow. behind waterviper, creekrose guarded the other exits.
"any last words?" hissed waterviper, her tail tip violently flicking from side to side like a snake tongue.
"just a few," she answered with a chuckle. "at least i'm not silent anymore."
a snarl erupted from the blue she-cat's throat. "this is for salmonblaze."
thunderclan was clean once more.
halfstar gazed over her new clan with pride. "thank you," she croaked as she tipped her head back to allow the stars that were slowly fading into sight to reflect in her eyes.
"now it is time to name a deputy."
apricotbreeze, the murderer, has been defeated at the paws of the witness. thunderclan wins!
