Nightstripe stares at the hot flames. He couldn't move. The crackling of the fire echoed in his hears, and each breath was full of smoke. He needed to get out... But he couldn't. Nightstripe was scared. He looks around, ears pinned back and eyes wide with fear.
He turns around quickly, and tries to head back. It was hard--he could barely see through all the black smoke. He jumps over the fallen trees, dodging the debris that fell from the canopy. Finally he could see light. He jumps, but suddenly a branch falls. It burns his fur, cutting into his flesh. He yowls, scrambling to get out of the way. Hissing, he ran out of the smothering forest and back to camp.

Willowstep heard Nightstripe's yowl from camp and sprinted towards it repeating the same thing over and over, "he can't be dead! He can't be dead!" She hissed as her through was flooded with smoke and she ha don't to struggle to get a breath in. She could see him, and he was injured. "Nightstripe! What have you done?!" She screeched louder than a hawk. Willowstep ran over to examine his wounds.

Nightstripe was coughing and gasping, dragging his tail along the dusty ground. There was a deep gash across his haunches that bled.
His fur was singed from the flames, but at least he was alive. Nightstripe sits, pinning his ears back. "Don't worry, I'm okay..." He coughs, looking away. Would she see me as weak now? He hisses under his breath. Why do I even care?

"You are NOT OK Nightstripe! Look at you!" Willowstep licked hopefully at his wound trying to cease the bleeding. The blood was hot on her tongue. "Lie down." She ordered. Willowstep didn't care if she seemed bossy, she never did, but right now, she was just worried sick.

Nightstripe flinches against her touch on his wound, but he doesn't say anything. The last thing he wanted to do was sound like a winging kit. He lies down slowly, stretching his paws out. His muscles ached, and his wound stung. But he felt a lot better with Willowstep at his side. Nightstripe lifts his head. "You're right, I am a mouse-brain..." He mews sadly, looking down at his paws.
"I shouldn't have gone towards the smoke, I should've stayed with you." He felt terrible. He hadn't been deputy for long, and already he endangered himself and ScarClan. He didn't have to spend that time investigating, instead he could have warned them.

Willowstep looked appalled. She had meant it as a joke, she didn't thing Nightstripe was a mouse brain at all. She loved him. Didn't he know that? "No. You are the bravest, funniest, most caring deputy- cat I have ever met." She purred. Sitting down next to him. They were on the other side of the river now. They were safe.

Nightstripe blinks his eyes a few times. "Really?" He mews, looking at her. Nightstripe looked at her with wide pale green eyes. Am I staring? He looks away quickly, and shuffles his paws uncomfortably. "Thank you, Willowstep." He manages to say, holding back a purr. He felt safer than ever with her, and felt good knowing she was safe with him on the bank.

Willowstep felt safe with Nightstripe. Especially since he wasn't bleeding as badly anymore. "I feel like we should stay here until the wildfire stops." She sighs as a perfectly good hunting trip was troubled by this wildfire. "Why was it you who had to get hurt? I should have gone..." Willowstep felt crushed inside. She had let him go, only to find him breeding from a massive gash on his back, scorched by the fire.

Nightstripe lifts himself up slowly. The gash was aching, and stung a little. But Willowstep had helped with the bleeding. He looks at the sweet she-cat and laughs softly. "Don't say that! You would've thought twice." Nightstripe purrs, licking his forepaw and drawing it over his ear, then carefully smoothing the fur on his chest. "I'm glad I was the cat who went, not you. Anyway, I'm the deputy,
I would get into trouble for sending a warrior to do such a dangerous job." He leans forward, giving her a lick between the ears.

Willowstep shook all over when Nightstripe licked her. She looked down at her ash-stained feet and mumbled softly, "I wish it could always be like this, I mean without the fire, and the wound. But I wish we could always be close like this." She felt comfortable lying next to him, feeling the warmth of his pelt.
