frizzpaw lie in the apprentice den, overcome with grief and horror. he had done nothing to save his other clanmates. nothing had changed. there were still cats dying, cats whom he shared tongues with, cats he called friends. he had exiled one of them. an innocent cat. but he wouldn't make that mistake this time. something had to be done.

When he'd finished hesitating in front of the apprentices' den entrance, he nosed his way into the opening to see Frizzpaw a little bit away. "Get up, would you," he puffed, shouldering his way through and into the den. "Come on. You've fallen behind on your training, and I want to get you ready for your warrior assessments sooner rather than later."

There had been another murder.

Though this time, a cover up was attempted. But after an inspection by Foxfoot and Turtlepaw, they concluded it had been murder.

Ocelotstep was buried with the highest respect a deputy could receive, and Willowstar made her choice for a new deputy. After the clan cheered for Avocetwhisker, a bittersweet mixture of excitement and sorrow, willowstar knew there was something else she had to do.

“We have deep sadness in our hearts tonight, even as we congratulate Avocetwhisker. Ocelotstep, was murdered, and you have come to the decision that we must exile another cat. As your leader, I strive to bring the Clan together, but it remains impossible with a murderer amongst us. Minnowpaw, my apprentice, I’m so sorry. But you have received the most votes, and so, you are henceforth exiled from ThunderClan.”

“But I’m not the killer!” Minnowpaw cried, “Willowstar, I wouldn’t ever break the warrior code like that!’

“I know you wouldn’t, Minnowpaw,” Willowstar started, bowing her head. “Being a warrior meant so much to you. I’m so sorry. You must leave,”

“Not without my warrior name, please, Willowstar, let me have this,” Minnowpaw was almost hysterical now. “How could you exile me?”

“Avocetwhisker and Onyxstorm, please, escort Minnowpaw to the border.” Willowstar turned around then, not wanting to see Minnowpaw any longer. She wasn’t strong enough. She knew her apprentice hadn’t killed any cat, but what kind of leader would she be if she broke her own rules?

Turtlepaw watched as his sister left the clan, an unfamiliar feeling in his chest. Was this guilt? He had voted his own sister, he certainly didn’t trust her, but did that mean she was a killer? Foxfoot wrapped her tail around her apprentice, in an attempt to comfort him, and he leaned into his mentor’s touch.
“You’ll be okay,” Foxfoot assured him. “You’ve got me.”

Skyheart turned to Hollowflame, nuzzling him before standing up. “Come on, I can’t bear this sadness. Hunt with me?”

Frostbelly watched as his kits wandered back into the nursery, a look of disdain on his face. Would he be upset if they were murdered? Perhaps that’s a thought for another time.

The killers watched as Clan life returned to normal, silently vowing to each other that they were doing the right thing. They would be rewarded for their hard work.

ThunderClan, unfortunately, you exiled another innocent cat.

It had been only a quarter moon since the death of Ocelotstep and the exile of Minnowpaw, when the starry cat appeared to the killers again.
“Welcome, the both of you,” she spoke, a little trill in her mew.
The killers turned to each other, seemingly noticing the other for the first time. The first killer nodded to the second killer, who flicked their ears in response before turning back to the she-cat.
“Are we to be working together?” the second killer mewed, narrowing their eyes.
“Oh, don’t act so cross,” the she-cat replied, “I have another mission for you two, though if you prefer, only one is needed to perform this kill.”
The she-cat turned around and led the pair to a pool of water, and gestured for the pair to look into it.
“A kit? How could killing a kit save the clans?” the second killer asked, scowling.
“I’ll do it, no questions asked,” this was the first killer, who avoided looking at the second killer, eyes intently glued on the starclan cat.
“Good,” she stated, matter-of-factly.

This kill was simple, it was a kit and though the first killer agreed to do it, they still didn’t want to kill a kit.
But it had to be done.
And so, the first killer woke up early, earlier than the sun, and slunk out of camp. Tracking down a mouse, they killed it swiftly. First part, done.
Now for the berries.
Carrying their prey, the killer wandered around the forest, before locating the deadly red berries. They opened up the mouse’s belly, and stuffed a few berries inside the mouse using a small stick. The killer proceeded to wrap up the mouse in a leaf, and trotted back to camp.

“Psst! Cherrykit! I have a special treat for you!”

Cherrykit lifted his head, and smiled at the cat at the nursery entrance. “A treat? For me?”
“Yes, but you have to be quiet,” the killer whispered sweetly.
Cherrykit followed the killer out to the clearing, not noticing that no one else was awake.
“What’s the surprise?”
“I caught this mouse for you to try,” the killer mewed, pushing forward the poisoned mouse.
“Wow! Thank you,” Cherrykit exclaimed, digging into the mouse.
And instantly, Cherrykit coughed, “It’s bitter,” he mewed.
“Chew and swallow,” the killer ordered.
Cherrykit did as he was told, and then lay down, claiming he was tired.
The killer picked up the kit by the scruff, laid him down next to his mother, cleaned up the evidence and returned to their nest as dawn broke.

I want to teach you a lesson in the worst kind of way, ThunderClan. Are you listening?

Pineshadow awoke in her nest, stretching out her front paws in front of her. She immediately noticed something cold beside her. When she turned, she noticed Cherrykit still asleep. She licked his forehead to awaken him, but the small tom gave no response. Pineshadow froze up. Could her son be... dead? No, it wasn't possible. The killer may kill cats within the clan, but never a kit. The queen let out a wail of despair, cowering over the tiny black-furred kit.

Hollowflame felt warm and cozy pressed against the beautiful molly, as if he belonged.. and definitely as if he was meant to be there for much longer than he was, his head jerking up in utter alarm at the sound of a blood-curdling wail. He licked Skyheart's head comfortingly, but rushed out of the nest to see what was wrong. Following his perked ears towards the sounds of muffled sobs, he, his stomach lurching, made his way into the nursery. The sight of Pineshadow made him want to curl up like a kit himself and go to sleep, to not have to look at the limp, cold body of Cherrykit any longer, "Pineshadow..." was all he could manage without getting choked up himself.
