The Kill wrote:"Hey, Clovermask!"
The warrior turned his head, startled when his name was called. He looked up to see a black she-cat, the medicine cat's apprentice, standing before him, shuffling her paws.
"I, uh, know it's getting dark and all, but I was planning on going out and collecting some herbs," she mewed sheepishly, looking up at her with her shining, blue-green eyes. "Since there's a lot of stuff out in the forest that could hurt me, I was wondering if a good warrior like yourself could come and protect me."
He nodded with a purr, getting to his paws and scraping up a small hole to bury the remains of his fresh-kill. "Sure," he meowed, pawing the pile of dirt over the bones.
Watching the exchange, the murderer grinned. Two birds with one stone.
Putting on a more cheery and joyful expression, they padded up happily. "Hello! I heard you were going out. Can I come? Who knows, you might need an extra set of paws."
Breezefire looked hesitant, but beckoned them closer with a brief dip of her head. "Alright. Come on, we're leaving now. If that's alright with you." Turning around, she padded off, Clovermask quickly following behind her.
The killer took a moment to think before going after the two. Yes, this would be easy.
And so the three set off from the camp, paddling across the stream that separated the island from the mainland.T The murderer's eyes gleamed as they passed several useful spots-- they could toss them in the river, or smash their heads against a rock, or... There was so many possibilities.
"Here's a good spot for watermint," the cat announced, stopping beside a clump of a bushy plant beside a stream. "I can already see some leaves."
Breezefire hummed, stepping up to examine the plant. Sniffing it warily, she nodded and began plucking the stems. "I heard Eaglepaw's caught a bellyache. This'll be--"
She was cut off when she heard two cats growling at one another. Turning, she stared at the two cats-- she hadn't even realized the other was there!
"I won't let you hurt them," the newcomer spat, tail lashing and fur bristling. The other spitting cat chuckled, though their ears were flat.
"You don't need to let me," they chortled, soon before whipping around. Seeing Breezefire wide-eyed and horrified, they growled, charging at her and shoving her into the icy water.
Being paralyzed with fear, Breezefire was unable to protest as she was tossed into the river. The water chilled her pelt and flooded her mouth as she finally mustered enough strength to try and call for help. Feeling the water fill her lungs, she fell limp and blacked out, the only feeling being a numb pain as her head hit against a rock.
Back up on the shore, the defending cat yowled at the other, racing to the bank to try and save the she-cat. They had to! This was what they were planning all along, wasn't it?
They spun around to face the murderer, who was laughing hysterically. "I'd hate to be rude, but your face... it's hilarious!"
They hissed, neck fur rising as they raced to save the other cat, who was staring at the two through the whole thing. Unfortunately, the killer was faster, reaching the tom while the protector was fox-lengths behind. Pinning the quaking warrior to the ground, they slowly dragged their claws across his neck.
I have to save him.
Managing to flatten their fur, they sped up their pace, only to see the killer was speeding up their scratch.
When they had finally reached the killer's side, they had already finished with another slash. It was over. Clovermask was lying on the ground, dark blood seeming even more eerie in the dim light. The sun had just finished setting, casting a blanket of night over the forest.
As though nothing had happened, the killer padded up to the stream and dipped their paws in it, cleansing their claws of the blood.
There was only one thing that they said to finish when they stalked off, back into the trees.
"You'll be spared. For now."
The guard could only sit and stare as the murderer strolled casually into the forest, their pelt cold.
