(Falconpaw)

the patrol returned to camp bearing rosypaw's body, laying her in the
center of the clearing. moving with a grim stiffness, her clanmates
delicately interspersed her pale fur with stalks of thyme and rosemary,
which served its purpose of masking the sour stench of death with a
more pleasant aroma. her closest clanmates settled around her, sitting
stiffly and silently mourning her loss.
as more and more cats arose from their slumber, alarm and shock spread
through the camp like a crackling wildfire. the apprentice's untimely death
and the mysterious circumstances surrounding it struck fear and anxiety in
the hearts of every riverclanner. rumors were murmured with hushed whispers
of how the poor apprentice had succumbed to her demise. had a dog or a rogue
chased her over the edge? had she really just been so careless as to slip into the
gorge? had she jumped in on purpose?
otterstar led a patrol to the area where her body had been recovered, searching
every nook and cranny for any clues that could shed some light on the matter.
they quickly tracked down a trace of her scent along the edge of the cliffside,
and along with it, that of another riverclan cat. the scent had long gone stale and
it would be impossible to pinpoint whose it was. however, one thing was clear: one
of their clanmates had been involved in her death.
striding into camp with heavy steps, otterstar called a meeting and reported their findings.
the knowledge that rosypaw had fallen at the hands of one of their own sparked dissent
and distrust. close friends shifted away uneasily from each other, kin shot each other
nervous looks, mates couldn't bear to make eye contact.
after a round of fretful discussion and with no clear evidence pointing to the identity of
the perpetrator, the clan came to an agreement that they were to vote who they thought
was responsible. whoever was unlucky enough to garner the most votes would be deemed
the killer, and would then have to leave the clan for good. they refused to linger on the
possibility of exiling an innocent clanmate, and instead focused on racking their minds on
who it could possibly be.
when the sun had dipped below the horizon and the moon had risen to take its place in the
sky, each cat cast their vote. a handful refused to accuse anyone, one had thrown a vote in
yewbriar's direction, but in the end, it was a clear who the clan had collectively agreed on.
"me?" falconpaw spluttered, eyes wide.
his face morphed into an expression of horror as his clanmate's accusing gazes all landed
on him.
otterstar, rigid with a grim tension, said quietly,
"falconpaw, i deeply regret having to do this, but the clan believes that-"
"no, it wasn't me, i'm telling you!" snapping with a ferocity that swiftly sprung up
and planted deep within him. consumed in a sudden surge of rage, falconpaw's teeth glinted in
the moonlight as he bared his fangs in a snarl. his tail lashed as he glared venomously at his accusers.
"i didn't kill rosypaw! why - how - i've served this clan for moons! i've worked hard,
i've trained, i've fought, i've been bled and beaten for the sake of you, you," he spat
his words directly at the individuals around him, all of you, and you think, you think
that i, i would just go off and murder one of my denmates?!" falconpaw hissed venomously,
his back curving into a spiny arch as he raised his haunches. a hint of shakiness in his voice made
his bubbling fear evident.
breathing heavily, his claws unsheathed and buried themselves into the ground. the riverclan cats
backed away from him, unwilling to be anywhere near the volatile tom.
"this isn't, this isn't right, doveroot, has starclan said a word about any of this? tell me."
falconpaw turned sharply to face the medicine cat, who looked alarmed when he began dashing straight
towards her. before he could reach her, shadewave and yewbriar ducked in front of her protectively,
stopping him from getting any closer.
"you...you too, yewbriar?" falconpaw's face fell, the anger in his words melting to disbelief.
his mentor said nothing, her expression remaining harsh and unmoving.
feeling his clanmates's stares piercing into him from all around, falconpaw turned around to face
them, his anger recurring once more when faced with their mistrust.
lip curling, he yowled, "you're all fishbrains, all of you! you-"
"enough, falconpaw." otterstar cut him off sharply, gaze hardening.
falconpaw met his leader's gaze, fury burning bright in his piercing yellow eyes. "otterstar-"
"jadeeye, shadewave, yewbriar, escort him to the border."
moving swiftly, the trio of warriors surrounded the young tom, whose aggressive posture
faded to a fearful one.
falconpaw spluttered, "you can't really be doing this, i-"
"move. now." shadewave's growl was gruff and devoid of any emotion other than
cold, simmering hostility.
head drooping and eyes going blank, falconpaw moved along with the patrol out of the camp,
the clearing falling dead silent as they disappeared into the shadowed underbrush.
the air was thick with tension, and the clan remained in silence for a few moments.
collectively, everyone ushered themselves into their dens, only a handful remaining to
sit vigil with rosypaw's body. not a single soul dared to break the silence.
the silence still hung heavy over the clan the following morning. nobody was in the mood to speak,
words being conveyed through body language instead. nobody wanted to relive the chaos of the
preceding day, so they went along with the usual motions of daily life trying to forget about it all.
it almost seemed to work, until a few days later traces of blood stains and chunks of russet fur were
found along the border, the area stinking of dog. a horrible fate to have befallen him...
still, the clan reassured themselves that it was by starclan's will that the murderer be vanquished
this way, and it was difficult for anyone to feel true pity for a heartless criminal.
and so, a week slipped by with riverclan being at peace with themselves. the crime had been
solved, and everything would go back to normal again.
unbeknownst to them, however, the murderer had escaped rosypaw's trial unpunished, and still walked
among them. this fact would soon be clear to them in the coming days...
two apprentices down, riverclan, two innocent souls whose paws now walk the path of stars.
who will join them next, i wonder?

we have enough poppy seeds for now, and comfrey...
chervil, chervil, where's the chervil- oh, there it is.
really shouldn't mix it up with the chickweed again.
speaking of chickweed, we really need to stock up.
maybe at sunningrocks? no-
"shiverpaw?"
the hushed call shook the medicine cat apprentice out of her
focused trance. her dull, half-lidded eyes blinked in recognition
at the cat who stood at the entrance of the medicine den. she
nodded a greeting as they approached and settled down to sit
beside her. they carried a plump trout in their jaws, which they
set on the ground, nudging it towards her. the fish's black, beady
eyes stared up at her, dead and unseeing.
despite having worked up an appetite from toiling away in the den
for several hours, shiverpaw turned her head away from the tempting
meal. she felt a wave of embarrassment that she had to have her prey
delivered to her, when she was perfectly capable of getting it herself.
taking note of her exhausted state, the cat said gently,
"you really shouldn't stay up all night sorting herbs. get some rest."
shiverpaw glumly shook her head, responding,
"with what happened with rosypaw and," she hesitated before
saying their name, "falconpaw, i want to be ready the next time an
incident comes up, and not just mosey around in camp not being
useful."
”do you blame yourself?”
falling silent for a moment, she murmured,
”a little. it’s my job to help save the lives of others...
what’s the point of learning all this if cats are still dying left and
right anyway?”
lightly resting their tail comfortingly on hers, they replied,
”it’s not your fault, alright? it was their time to go. don't dwell
too long on ghosts - they don’t walk the earth anymore. on the other
hand, you still do, but that’ll change if you don’t eat this fish. look at
you - you’re starving.”
giving in to their insistence and her own grumbling belly, shiverpaw dug into
the trout without another second of hesitation. the flesh felt unpleasantly
cold in her mouth, and there was an unusual tang to it that she couldn’t quite
place. ignoring it, she continued tearing at the fish and blinked gratefully at
the cat for the meal.
"tell me the effects of eating deathberries."
used to being quizzed out of the blue, shiverpaw mechanically replied
in between bites, "mmph, drooling, vomiting - mmph - rapid breathing -
mmph - heart beats a lot faster, pupils dilate - mmph - and of course,
death."
licking her lips, which were dripping with bright red juices, she said,
"thanks for the fish."
the cat shook their head, forcing up a purr. "no need to thank me.
now get some sleep."
shiverpaw's jaws opened up into a yawn as she settled in her nest.
only after a few seconds, her eyelids were beginning to droop lazily.
her relaxed muscles suddenly tensed up as something unpleasant
stirred within her.
gasping at the sudden rush of nausea that assaulted her, her paws scrabbled
at the ground as she began to retch, the rank scent of vomit clogging up the
den. bolts of pain alighted from her stomach, spreading to the rest of her body
as she writhed in agony. it was like she'd been possessed by a demon - she'd
never experienced pain as stark and cutting as this before.
unable to call out for help, the she-cat was flailing about helplessly, eyes
wild and unseeing as she fought a losing battle. her chest rose and fell
rapidly until it went still. the life in her dark brown eyes drained, leaving
the orbs blank and hollow.
her final sight before her death was of a figure at the entrance of the den,
towering and unmoving. not lifting a paw to help the struggling apprentice.
they had turned tail and slipped silently outside.
a dark shadow disappearing into the night from which it came, invisible,
almost as if it had never been there in the first place.
one, two, three. another soul fallen, another soul free.
