Zach carefully picked his way down the jagged, steep slope, his sure-footed hooves finding tenuous purchase in the grey stone walls of the canyon. His snow-white coat contrasts sharply with the dull granite and deep green evergreens that surround him, a beacon announcing his presence to equids and predators alike. It is only the promise of winter, the smell of snow and cold even now tickled his nostrils, that offers to bring any peace for the albino equid. Needless to say, his journey has not been an easy one. Zach has been the target of countless attacks by coyotes and even a mountain lion. He would like to believe it is his skillful mastery of the mountains that has ensured his perseverance, but there is more than a little luck involved as well.
Finally though, Zach is nearing his destination, and as all four hooves reach flat ground for the first time in months, he stops to take in the view. A wide valley filled with ponderosa and aspen stretches before him, and snow white peaks wink down from a saphire sky on all sides. A picturesque study in seclusion, the only sound that greets him is the steady bubbling of the little stream as it enters the ravine. Nothing more than a brook here at its heaswaters, the river had been his constant companion as it gathered strength and carved a path through the mountains.
Ears tipped forward in caution, Zach lifts his nose up into the air and takes in the scent of this new place, searching for any hint of the tantalizing aroma that had lead him here. At first it seems as though he will be disappointed, and his tail droops behind him. He stands still as a statue as he sorts through the breeze. Just as his efforts are starting to seem futile, Zach finally finds what he was searching for, and a wave of excitement ripples over his body: there are other equids here.
"So, we are no longer alone, my dear river," Zach says, speaking softly to himself. Impatient to meet whoever it is that lives here, he abandons the safety of the chasam's mouth qnd trots off into the trees.
