Grassleap's body lay in the center of camp, Foxstar watching with cold yet distant eyes. He had let his clan become so destructive- so destructed, and it feel like he was losing control. With each glare he received he knew he was no longer being trusted, and his ears folded down when he heard Swiftfoot's quiet words.
"It all makes sense. First, Reedstar leaves him, then he grows cold. It's a good motive.."
He shook his head, clearing his mind. His clan was slowly turning against him, or at least half of the clan was. Fadewhisker watched him, the tom's eyes full of anger. Foxstar met his gaze with resentment, his ear flicking as though it didn't bother him. Hadn't they been family once? It felt like Fadewhisker didn't believe him to be family anymore.
Foxstar leapt onto the high rock, his eyes glazing over his clan.
"Before I fill this clan with dread, I would like to honor one of our fellow clanmates." A few cats murmured things under their breath, wondering if it was an appropriate time to do such things.
"Actually, I would like to honor two of them. Nightpaw, step forward. Silverpaw, step forward as well."
Foxstar drifted his gaze to the two apprentices who stood before him. Nightpaw, who was older than a normal apprentice, and Silverpaw.
"Nightpaw, Tanglebelly informed me that you have exceptional hunting abilities, and that he taught you to take your time. Your keen eye is what helped you with this, according to your mentor. I, Foxstar, Leader of Riverclan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look upon this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of our noble code, and I commend her as a warrior in return. Nightpaw, do you swear to uphold the code, and to protect your clan, even for the cost of your life?"
"I do, Foxstar."
"Then by the powers of Starclan, I give you your new warrior name. From this moment forward Nightpaw, you will be known as Nightowl for your exceptional hunting abilities. We welcome you as a full warrior to Riverclan."
The clan called her new name, but many stayed silent.
Foxstar looked to Silverpaw, who stood anxiously and obviously distraught.
"Silverpaw, as your mentor is no longer with us, I will be leading you to the Moonpool for you to gain your new name."
Fadewhisker glared at Foxstar, but shifted his gaze to his paws soon after.
"Now, we will exile someone from the clan. Does anyone have any evidence to who the killer might be?"
Instantly after his words, cats shot up and began throwing accusations towards the leader.
"You have a motive Foxstar! You were the closest to Reedstar, you could've killed hi-"
"ENOUGH!" Foxstar snapped, his fur standing on end. "How DARE you accuse me of such horrors! I will not listen to baseless accusations! What I asked for is evidence, not your opinions!"
The clan began to settle down, some with their heads drooped. Burnetwing pushed past her fellow clanmates, her eyes locked on to the leader above her.
"I have evidence, Foxstar. I saw the killer. their pelt was dark, much darker then yours. I believe it was black."
Fadewhisker stood to his paws, his mew hinted with ferocity. "Why didn't you say this before? This makes you a suspect for-"
Foxstar cut in quickly. "No, Fadewhisker. This makes you a suspect. My deputy is reliable, and I trust her word. If she saw the killer, the only reason she didn't say was for her own safety."
The clan turned to Fadewhisker, and he hissed.
"Why would I kill my own brother? My last family?" His words made Shiverpaw and Silverpaw look at each other. Fadewhisker began to growl, claws unsheathing. His clanmates began to give him space, and he stepped forward to face Foxstar.
Foxstar watched him, and his mew was calm. "Reedstar told me how he didn't trust you. He wasn't your brother, and you knew that. He was half kitty-pet, but was saved by your mother as he was abandoned. Your family is those who have your blood, isn't that right? You cared for Reedstar as much as your cared about Silverpaw and Shiverpaw. You acted like you did, but in truth you would sacrifice them for your own life." His tail curled, and he watched as Fadewhisker grew anxious. His words were true, and his clan could see it.
"So what if he wasn't my blood relative? I wouldn't kill him!"
"You blamed him for your parents death. The only reason they stayed behind was to save him. They didn't give you a second glance, did they? I remember seeing you look jealous when Reedstar was made deputy. Even more so when he accepted his nine lives. You always disliked me, and you used me as an excuse to hate Reedstar. You tried to frame me by slashing his eyes, but no one fell for it. Look to your clanmates, Fadewhisker. No one trusts you anymore."
Fadewhisker whipped around, feeling small. Foxstar made his way down the highrock, claws unsheathed. He stood tall over Fadewhisker, and he let fury take over.
He slashed Fadewhisker's eyes with ease, and Fadewhisker fell backwards in panic. He had been found out. The tom who always seemed so powerful was truly weak.
Foxstar's words rang loud among the screams of anger from the clan. "I, Foxstar, Leader of Riverclan, exile Fadewhisker by the power of Starclan. If he ever decides to come back to our territory, let it be known that we will attack on site."
Fadewhisker began backing up, tripping over the paws of his clanmates. Foxstar edged forward, pushing Fadewhisker out through the entrance.
"Leave and never return!"
Fadewhisker stumbled through the forest, a familiar scent catching his senses. He stood on a flat surface, possibly a rock, yet all he could see was darkness. The bushes rustled nearby, and his ears perked. Someone launched out of the bushes, slashing Fadewhisker's throat as if he had been prey. As Fadewhisker began to lose his life, the cat whispered something in his ear.
"This was for Reedstar."
Congrats Riverclan! you caught your killer!
