"No. It's fine," Brooke assured the tom. She was curious about the hawk attack but didn't want to ask about it. Instead she parted her jaw and sniffed the air for prey.

Brooke looked at the tom in surprise. She didn't realize he had gone through that. "I'm sorry," she said quietly. She couldn't imagine watching a sibling die. She also couldn't imagine killing her parents either.
