Their mother was sleeping in the nursery. A morning of play-fighting with the kits had worn her out. "Let's sneak out!" Hawkkit hissed. "I want to see the forest!" All three of the kits crept out the camp through the dirtplace tunnel.

They were pouncing on several beetles when Whitekit spotted a mouse. She stalked it, but it saw her at the last second. It ran down a tunnel. Whitekit followed it, the other kits close behind. Further down the tunnel they heard a snap. Surprised, the kits whirled around. A badger stood there, one paw on the dead mouse. The three kits froze in fright.

She woke up with a jolt. "Where are my kits?" She called frantically. "They're gone!"

Lion carries the mouse in his mouth while looking for a good spot to eat. *Now where was that one spot at* he thinks to him as he finally settles down in a mess of roots, to eat his mouse.

"Run!" Rosekit squeaks. The kits sped in a random direction.
"No! Stick together!" Whitekit wails. "Follow Hawkkit!"
The kits run as fast as their little legs can take them and then they realize that the badger is not following them.
