it was not long before the clan realized that cranepaw was missing. as the small clan woke up, the young she-cat made no appearance, immediately sending panic and fear throughout the clan. with only 5 cats remaining, jadedstar send mistbreeze and ottersnap out to search for the apprentice while she, minnowshade, and blazingsun remained behind. they followed her scent trail to the falls, and were horrified to discover her crushed under a rock. the duo was unsure how to bring her back to camp and sorrowfully left the she-cat behind to return the news to camp. they made their way quickly, knowing that one of riverclan's members was about to be booted next. the murderers were going unsolved for too long.
when they returned empty-pawed, it created confusion. mistbreeze broke the news to jadedstar, who immediately turned on mistbreeze. "cranepaw was your apprentice, and now she's dead!" she snarled, flexing her claws as she immediately became hostile. the air quickly became tense, and the small group's demeanor fell awkward. mistbreeze felt a deep pit drop in her stomach, knowing once she was accused, that was about it. she turned to her mate and daughter, both of whom looked away and shrugged. minnowshade stepped forward, guilty for casting her vote but felt it necessary nonetheless, saying, "i know this is hard decision for us to make, but... we're running out of options. cranepaw would've trusted you. it's all the evidence we have."
mistbreeze sighed and nodded, anguish filling her as she realized she had to leave her home. "i didn't do this, i just need to say my peace on that," she said as she padded out, looking over her shoulder in hopes that someone would do something. all she was met with was a mix of glares and looks of pity. she dropped her head and continued her way out, deciding to take refuge in another clan. she tried thunderclan first, but when mentioned she was thrown out for the accusation of murder, they turned her down. she had better luck with shadowclan, becoming a rather lonely warrior of the clan, missing the river greatly.
you have one chance to catch the killer.
ottersnap has been promoted to deputy.

nightfall fell over the somber riverclan, with its remaining four members begrudgingly returning to their empty dens. minnowshade and ottersnap curled together as the only two warriors, blazingsun settled in his quiet den, while jadedstar lay awake in her nest. her mind was terrorized by the slaughters of each of her clanmates, having begun with the murder of her own daughter. she tossed and turned, sighing with frustration as more stress than sleep filled her mind. she curled up, burying her face in her paws. nothing. she stood, figuring perhaps a midnight stroll would ease her mind and tire her body. as she began to make her way out of the den, a heavy force knocked her to the ground, hitting her head sharply against the ground. her ears began to ring, muffling the voice of her attacker.
"jadedstar," they spoke, clearly but quiet enough to not alert the rest of the clan, "i know your dirty little secret." they padded forward, pressing a paw down on jadedstar's head. too dazed to move, jadedstar could only let out a small groan. "you're a half clan cat leading riverclan! how disgraceful," they snarled into her ear, flexing their claws. jadedstar winced in pain, straining to better hear her attacker. though she could not see them, she hoped she could rely on her sense of hearing to pin down who it was. her nose gave no indication, only picking up on riverclan's general scent.
as her attack spoke, another voice chimed in from the entrance of the den. "hey! you!" they cried, galloping towards jadedstar and the mystery cat. the weight was lifted from jadedstar as she heard the two tumble, wrestling with each other. she stood to her paws, swaying as her head still spun. she felt one of them rush past her and out of the den, running faster than she had ever heard a cat go before. her savior pursued, pausing for a moment to assess that jadedstar was not in immediate need of care. after a quick glance, they took off, chasing the murderer through riverclan. they soon lost the trail, frustrated yet relieved at the same time. it had felt like each night, they had a sense of who was going to be attacked and closely guarded that cat, but never faced off with an attacker. instead, they would die the following night. finally, they had guarded the right cat at the right time. they returned to camp and slunk into their den, with a nagging thought about who the killer was.
the killer had treed themselves in the chase and waited long and hard before descending. anger and frustration coursed through them, knowing it was too late now to try to kill jadedstar. they made their way back to camp and into their den, but sleep seemed impossible to come.
thank starclan your guard was on point tonight, but are you smart enough to catch the killer?
