acornpaw was comfortable at first - the votes seemed to be gathered towards newtmak, who she suspected as the murder. but then a cat turned their gaze on her, and suddenly the focus was shifted. her and newtmask quarreled, but in the end, she was considered more guilty by a single cat. "it's not me, i would never do such a thing," she yowled above the mob. with no true leader, the clan was quick to close in on her. magpienose moved to defend her and let her leave peacefully, but vixentail leaped in front of her. "leave my daughter alone!" she yowled, snapping at a cat that moved towards them. "we don't need any of you. my kits don't deserve to be raised here," she snapped, placing a protective paw across her belly. she licked burningkit's head regretfully as she turned and left with acornpaw, her eldest daughter. "i'll miss you," she meowed to her, but before burningkit could respond, the clan chased acornpaw and vixentail away. they ended up becoming loners, and vixentail had four kits, three toms and a she-cat. unable to give up the -kit suffix, she named the she-cat burningkit after the adopted daughter she left behind and the three toms squirrelkit, avocetkit, and berrykit after some of the murderer's victims.

burningkit awoke from a nightmare with a cry. as she felt fur brushing up against her, she relaxed - it was all just a dream. vixentail was right next to her! there was no murderer. she closed her eyes as the cat began to lick her head comfortingly, and she purred softly to show her approval. she didn't even feel the teeth sink into the back of her neck until it was too late, and she was being welcomed into the ranks of starclan.
