Luka crept through the snow, keeping his eye on the hare that sat in front of him, about twenty feet away. The animal had it’s back to him, and thankfully he was down wind. He hadn’t eaten in days, and his stomach pinched painfully from the lack of food. The winter had been harsh, but it was clear that the environment couldn’t support two large packs. He was walking slowly, but even so, the large male wolf was no cat – he had a hard time walking softly on the snow. Luka paused and flattened himself to the ground, feeling sheepish and awkward. But he would do whatever it took to catch this hare, even if it meant making himself look like a fool. The rabbit’s head shot up, it’s ears swiveling slowly back and forth. From where he stood, Luka could see it’s eye, a large, dark brown, almost black orb that scanned the surrounding area. Luka breathed a quiet sigh of relief as the hare went back to nosing through the snow, looking for fresh green shoots to eat. His keen ears picked up the sound of it’s claws scrabbling on the thin layer of ice that separated the snow and the ground. It’s white fur helped hide it from Luka, especially when it sank further into the snow. Even so, Luka continued to creep forward, taking slow cautious steps, being careful to not alert the rabbit of his presence. He was within jumping distance when the snow and ice beneath him cracked and broke, causing him to fall up to his belly in the snow. The rabbit, thus alerted, shot up, out of it’s hole and scampered across the snowy landscape, light enough that it didn’t sink into the snow as Luka did. With a low snarl he lunged forward, but he kept sinking into the snow every time he landed, making it impossible to chase the rabbit.
Growling in frustration, the brute turned around, and shook the snow off his dark grey pelt. His pale blue eyes scanned the frozen forest, searching for signs of bigger prey that would be easier to chase through the snow, but to no avail. The forest was silent as always, aside from the creaking of heavily laden branches and the chirping of birds that remained here for the winter. Squirrels chased each other up and down the trees, teasing him. Luka knew that he had no hope of catching one of them, they were too quick. Although they weren’t that bright, they could climb trees and he couldn’t.
The male wolf was concerned by the lack of prey the wolves were dealing with. They had no hope of lasting like this much longer, he already felt weaker from his excursion with the hare. How could they hope to win the war against Nox if they couldn’t even catch their own prey? The less the ate the weaker they grew, and the weaker they grew the more susceptible they were to Nox’s fighters, although Luka figured that they were probably experiencing the same hunger pains as the wolves of Caelestis. Taking his time, Luka slowly made his way through the woods and back to the camp.
