I used to spend time with the apprentices when I was younger...but now, I tend to keep to myself and just listen to the stories they tell. You never know when one will slip up and mention something integral, something we can use to our advantage - if it ever came to it, that is."

Nonetheless, Russetswirl was already bounding off to speak with Daydream. Oh well, I'll just get started and surprise him. Happily, the warrior trotted towards the elder's den.

Robinwind looked over at Beestar with sadness in his eyes. The kits were healthy, but Beestar... He had tried the best he could. "I know." He mewed, his voice hoarse. "I'm sorry." He dipped his head. He had herbs scattered around him, left about in a disaster as he had tried to save her. His leader had lost a life, and he hadn't been able to help her. "Your kits though, they seem strong." He said, smiling at the two wiggling kits. Standing up, he picked some leaves up and gave them to Beestar. "To get you your strength back."

As Splashpaw walked up beside her, she purred and looked over to her apprentice. "Hiya, Splashpaw!" She mewed. "This is probably your last gathering as an apprentice, that's exciting! Hanging out with the warriors now?" Elmshade glanced back towards the group of young apprentices, unsure. Splashpaw seemed a bit upset, so she hoped that she could help cheer her up. As they reached the gathering place, she looked around. EagleClan wasn't here yet. They'd probably be there soon.

Creamflower watches over Beestar's kits like a hawk, feeling relieved as soon as she realizes Beestar is awake. "How did you lose a life just by giving birth to kits?" she asked almost softly, a hint of horror from her voice. She noticed something was wrong when Beestar was acting abnormally, but she never thought it would be this bad. She looks at Beestar and then at Robinwind, fear showing in her eyes.

Splashpaw heard Bearpaw's words as she padded ahead, but ignored the younger apprentice. She's just being immature, she told herself. She snapped back to reality when she heard her mentor's voice, and forced herself to smile. "Yeah," she replied. "I thought I'd better get used to it now. I'll be a warrior soon."

Riverstripe felt a chill run down his spine at the sound of Beestar's yowl for Robinwind. Could she be kitting already? Before he could react, he saw Robinwind, Creamflower, and Sunflare race out of the nursery, into the medicine den to get herbs, and then into Beestar's den. He instinctively stood up, ready to follow them, but stopped himself. He wanted to be there for his leader, but if she really was kitting, what could he possibly do to help? No, he would be more helpful staying out of the way. Robinwind and Creamflower could handle things, whatever happened. He was confused, and, if he was honest with himself, a bit bothered to see Sunflare of all cats going to help, but perhaps his help had been requested for whatever reason. Maybe Robinwind had just wanted an extra cat around in case, StarClan forbid, something should go wrong. The thought was enough to make the skin beneath his pelt crawl, and he shook his head to clear it. No, everything would be fine. What could go wrong?

Sunflare's ears pricked at the sound of Beestar's yowl and he jumped to his paws at once. He nodded in understanding of Robinwind's words and quickly followed his mate in the medicine cat's den. "I won't," he assured her, making sure to keep an eye out for her description of the seeds so as not to accidentally grab them. He grabbed the ones he knew of that were useful, only to dart out once again to Beestar's den alongside Creamflower. But almost as soon as he'd entered the den, the air around him changed. He saw his leader, who he had always seen so strong before, curled up in what looked like excruciating pain with Robinwind leaning over her, and any excitement he'd had before quickly turned to nervousness. He felt paralyzed; unsure what to do, he simply set the herbs down next to the medicine cat and then took a few steps back. Why had he thought he could help? Robinwind was a medicine cat and Creamflower a queen, but what good was he? A feeling of helplessness engulfed him as he watched the two experienced cats work to help Beestar. The next few moments seemed to drag on for moons, yet go by in a blur all at the same time, and Sunflare felt like he'd come out of a daze at the end of it all. He had just witnessed a queen kitting for the first time and his leader losing her first life all at the same time. And throughout it all, he had stood there uselessly, frozen by fear and uncertainty. Even though Beestar had regained consciousness, he still felt as if icy claws had gripped his stomach. "Will...she be okay?" he managed to ask Robinwind finally.

Tigerblaze looked thoughtful a moment, as if he wasn't quite sure he wanted to tell Blizzardclaw, but knew the information would get out one way or another anyway. Besides, if there was any cat who should know besides himself, Beestar, and the others who had seen it for themselves, it was the Clan deputy. "We found a dead cat in the tunnels, all mangled," he revealed calmly and quietly at last. "It wasn't anyone we recognized, and we didn't scent any trespassers. We don't know what caused it, but the injuries were unlike any I've ever seen."

Nightwish blushed beneath her fur. "We were just talking," she replied casually before quickly changing the subject. "Happy to be attending the gathering tonight?"

"What nerve indeed!" Littleflower exclaimed dramatically as she helped the tom to his paws. That was when she spotted Southstar chatting with Daydream and Russetswirl, all of whom looked rather serious. "Wonder what's going on over there," she thought aloud.

Southstar nodded at Russetswirl's words. "Yes, it would probably be a good idea regardless to visit the Moonpool, see if StarClan will give us any more answers. I'll let you know if they speak to me at all." But even as he said this, he doubted they would; StarClan had been silent with him for moons. He couldn't help but wonder with a pang of guilt if it was because they were disappointed in him and the secrets he'd been keeping from his Clanmates. Shaking his head, he noticed his Clanmates looked impatient to be leaving, and added, "We should get going now. Are you ready, Daydream?"

B e e s t a r let her ringed tail fall over her two squirming toms, looking at them with pride and love. They were precious. Two little tabbys, they stilled at her belly, drinking deeply. She broke into a purr. "It doesn't matter," she mewed. "Thank you for trying so hard, Robinwind. My life does not matter as much as my kits, and they are safe and healthy. Thank you, too, Creamflower, Sunflare. I couldn't have done it without all of you." She nodded to Sunflare. "Would you like to tell the cats remaining in camp that the kits are here?" Typically, the warriors and apprentices were excited to see newborn kits - she was glad that most of them were at the Gathering, she would get a bit of peace before they returned. She lapped up the herbs Robinwind gave her without complaint, though the bitter tang made her nose wrinkle. Nothing would be able to dull this moment - her kits were here. Her and Streamstar's kits, the love of her life.

J a c k d a w p a w ' s twitched an ear to acknowledge Bearpaw's words, but he didn't speak. The apprentice only heaved a heavy saw, his large paws carrying him towards the Gathering place. He had never been there before, but his excitement had been dampened. Still, he felt a slight twinge of adrenaline as they padded into the old Clan camp. He glanced around, his shame overcome by awe as he took in the sight. Only OakClan scent hung in the air, though there was something he didn't recognize, faint and stale from a moon of emptiness. "Wow," he mewed to quietly.

A c o n r n s p o t s met Russetswirl's gaze as he glanced over at her. Her mouth was full of the soft moss of his nest, and she was soaking in his warm scent as it wafted up to her nose and scent glands. She smiled warmly at him, proud of herself for taking the initiative, unaware it wasn't what he wanted. When he turned back to his duties she trotted on towards the warriors' den.

"Yes, I'll be taking a patrol out tomorrow morning to scout the area and bury the body," Tigerblaze explained as he padded along. With a menacing glance back at the apprentices, he added, loud enough for them to hear, "Oh, don't worry, I'll make sure they stay silent."

"Oh--Yes, of course," Sunflare stuttered, caught off guard. "They're beautiful, Beestar," he added quickly. The kits were indeed beautiful, and only made him long to be a father more, but he was still recovering from all he had just seen. Padding out of the den, he saw that the camp was mostly empty save for Riverstripe, and bounded over to the tom. "Riverstripe!" he called, coming to a halt beside the warrior. "Where are the others? Did they all go to the gathering?" Riverstripe had been lying outside the warriors' den, tired but unable to fall asleep, anxious but unable to do anything about it, when Sunflare bounded over. Immediately he sat up. "Most of them did, yeah. I haven't seen Fallenstone since we came back from patrol though. Why? Is everything okay?" He looked at the fluffy warrior, worry evident in his eyes. Sunflare nodded in response. "Beestar had her kits," he purred, but his purr seemed forced and his fur a bit more fluffed up than usual, and when Riverstripe looked closely, he saw his own anxiety reflected in the pale tom's eyes. "Did something happen?" he asked nervously. Sunflare shuffled his paws, hesitating for a moment before saying quietly, "She lost a life." Riverstripe felt his heart skip a beat. "What? Why?" Sunflare shrugged. "I don't know. There were complications, I guess. Better to ask Robinwind. But she's okay now, and so are her kits, and that's the most important thing." He nodded towards the leader's den. "Do you want to see them?" Riverstripe didn't respond for a moment; of course he wanted to see them, but he was afraid of what else he may see. What if he came in to find Beestar dead? Sunflare could sense his nervousness, and draped his tail over the silver tabby's shoulders. "Come on," he murmured gently as he guided the tom to the leader's den. Riverstripe felt numb as he followed the older warrior, and when they arrived at the den, slowly peeked in. "Beestar?" he called softly.

"Well, medicine cats always have to go," Nightwish pointed out. "I don't always get to go either. But at least you're going this time!" She didn't want Goldenrose to feel angry that her brother went to all the gatherings and she didn't. Still, she wondered if the reason they hardly ever went together was because Southstar knew how they didn't get along.

Southstar returned the lick to Russetswirl before gesturing with his tail for Daydream to follow him to the camp entrance. Once there, he let out a yowl to summon the rest of the cats who had been chosen. "Ready everyone?"

"Well, whatever it was, looks like they're ready now," Littleflower observed. "Come on, let's go!" Nudging Swiftbadger, she trotted over to where her leader was.

Finally, Darkpaw thought to himself as Southstar called the cats together, and quickly padded over. Spotting Goldenrose talking to Nightwish, he called to her, "Hey, Goldenrose! Let's go."
