"There's no way. It can barely breathe in that thing," Sparrowcatcher mewed. He paused for few moments and then, in a very quiet voice, the tom said, "I think we should let it out."
Then, suddenly, Sparrowcatcher whipped around as Ottersplash clawed at its ears. "Don't!" He exclaimed. The tom leapt towards her and put himself between the she and the badger. "Can't you see it is suffering? A warrior knows when he's won. Never hurt a downed opponent," The tabby said, reminding the she of the warrior code. The badger behind him faintly groaned and sunk its head back, as if to hide from the pain.

Eventually Bristlepelt nodded. "Sparrowcatcher's right. Maybe we could get it out of there. I think it'll die either way so maybe it could die it peace?" He never thought he would feel bad for a badger but watching it die made him think it had been unreasonable to leave it there in the first place. He carefully got close to where the tight metal string was cutting into the badger's neck. "Sparrowcatcher, could you help me get this thing off? I couldn't do it my self."

Ottersplash sits. "I'll watch you die.", she mummers, grooming. Foolish...

Sparrowcatcher cast a glance to Ottersplash, but did not respond. She was right, after all. But he felt this was right. Obliging to Bristlepelt he drew near the tom--fur slightly prickling--and gently put one paw near the contraption. He half expected the badger to whip around and bite him but it didn't move. If anything, its eye seemed to lock onto Sparrowcatcher and Bristlepelt, watching them. Sucking in a breath, Sparrowcatcher dipped his head and pawed at the metal trap.
"I'd need to fasten my jaws around it. Could you...watch my back? In case it, y'know, tries something." Sparrowcatcher flushed at this.

Bristlepelt nodded. "Yeah of course." He stood by him ready to launch if he need to. "If your just going to watch, then shut your mouth, Ottersplash. This is serious." He snapped at her.

Taking a breath, Sparrowcatcher leaned forward and snapped his jaws around the trap. Through it, he felt the badger's rank fur that smelled of sweat, fear and blood. Fear? The creature's heart pulsed under its skin. Summoning all his strength Sparrowcatcher leaned back, pulling. His eyes closed in concentration and his claws dug into the ground. He was aware he was pulling deeper on the badger's neck but it hardly made a whimper. Perhaps it was too exhausted.
All of a sudden the trap snapped, sending Sparrowcatcher bowling backwards. He hit his head against the ground, hard, and lay there a moment, dazed. The badger did not move.
