" W e all carry a burden within our hearts. Some are heavy, some are light. Others are laced with thorns and needles and tear at out insides. No matter what the burden is though, it is ours and ours alone. We cannot share it, or destroy it. It exists, simply to exist.
And so it shall be."
Hawk relaxed a bit, his wariness remaining as he stood before the she-cat. Standing tall and baring his chest to her, Hawk blinked, watching her with curious eyes. "Are you alone?" He asked. His voice was quiet and gravelly, having an almost silk quality to it. Warm and seductive, it was a voice used to deception. However the rough whisper spoke of another story. One that spoke of a much greater pain than death.
The pain of loosing a future.

Not exactly the kind of question he was asking, but fair enough. He watched as she cuddled her kits, choking on the words 'mate' and 'fire'. It didn't take a genius to figure out what had happened. Her mate had died in the huge forest fire, killing her only chance of surefire protection and destroying the chance of a fatherly figure for her kits. He felt a shift of pity for her, but nothing more. Her story might be a sad one, but it was just that. Another story.
Life was too short for every story and burden to be heard and cared about. This one made no difference to him as the last. The only one he cared about was his own. As selfish as it was, Hawk was raised to be that way. Protect yourself. Survive only for yourself. Make whatever sort of living you could, so long as it was living. Otherwise your life would stop and your world would crumble.
Hawk had managed all of this, only to have it cruelly ripped away from him by the hands of fate. It was the only thing that kept him going know. The instinctive urge to survive. He blinked, conscious of the fact that he was standing to attention and her eyes were on him. He frowned slightly, sitting on his hind legs and flicking an ear. Tearing his gaze away from the she-cat, he stared down at the kits. A dark glimmer appeared behind his eyes as he studied him. They were remarkabye different from the she-cat that cuddled them, however they had similarities. He looked away, a small snarl on his face as he glared painfully at the horizon line. It was no use.
He couldn't stand to look at them, much less think of them. They reminded him too much of the broken future that he had once had.

Hawk paused as her question filtered through his self-turmoil. Turning to her, he frowned. "No." He responded curtly, realizing that the she-cat probably didn't recognize his scent as that of the mountains. She probably had spent most of her life among the fields and trees of the plains below.
Moonfeather shifted uncomfortably, as she looked at the tabby tom. "I never said you where evil, but who said I wasn't," Moon hissed at the cat, her ears perking back up again. She glared at the tom, then glanced at the tall grass around them, "I not from here, but I guess you could call this me and my sister's home. We are originally from a clan in a forest by a river. It is quite a ways from here." Moon sighed and flicked her tail restlessly, "I was kicked out the clan as a Apprentice. I Foxstride as a kit, and raised her myself. She, naturally followed in my footsteps. When everything went down in the clan we came out here to live. We do okay, but it's isn't like the forest." Moon stood up and yawned, "Well, thanks for everything. Gotta go find a fox-cat."
