maybe she should have expected it, the rejection. a tom of his nature, she should have known he wouldn't accept the gesture, even if it was a selfless one. even still, she tried not to let the disappointment show. the mouse now lay near her paws, a small token of her embarrassing efforts. her amber gaze slowly drifted from the mouse to meet his. green eyes stared at her, seemingly awaiting her next move. she hesitated between walking away or giving a the cold tom a small push. it wasn't in her nature to even seek out an interaction, much less with a cat like adderfrost, yet her mind still warred with her.

just this once... she thought to herself. sucking in a deep breath and steeling her nerves, she nudged the mouse back towards the silver tom.
you're out here every morning, doing the same thing. i'm sure you can spare a few minutes to eat. it's not like they're going anywhere. she wasn't even sure if his reasoning for not eating was because he didn't want to miss anything the emberclan cats did or if he truly wasn't hungry, but she was choosing to believe it was the former. she didn't want to even consider the possibility that he trusted her or his clanmates so little that it was unfathomable that they would extend a kind gesture. however, now that she thought about it, this was her first time approaching him outside of any patrols they had been on together. she cocked her head to the left, watching him with a pondering stare, hoping he would accept the gesture and she could move past what was arguably one of her most awkward encounters to date.

the small female grumbled sleepily at the feeling of a cold nose nuzzling her, attempting to rouse her from sleep. she tucked her head deeper into her mother's stomach, trying to not only escape being awake, but also trying to resume the dream she was having. she was so so close to making it out of camp in this one only for her mother to shatter it by waking her up. palekit didn't get very far at reimagining the dream when a swat at her tail had her head shooting up. her sleepy green eyes glared blearily at her sister. if there was one moment this bubbly kit wasn't quite so bubbly, it was when she was being woken up. she loved her sleep.

letting loose a large yawn, she flicked her ears at her sister.
i'm up, i'm up she muttered. pushing back onto her hind paws, she stretched out her front ones in front of her. her tail curled slightly with the stretch before she stood to her full, small height. shaking slightly, she turned to her sister. with no warning, she pounced at her to tackle her before racing to the nursery entrance. looks like someone will be last to breakfast! she threw back teasingly to her sister.

β˜† ─── BIRDSONG.
i fell in love at the orange show speedway -
but i’ve never been here in my life

    moonlitclan warrior β˜† she-cat
    tags/mentions; oakpool, foxpaw [ment],
    falconstar [ment], adderfrost [ment],
    brackenpaw [ment]
    ───────────────────────

Birdsong laughs, sharp and loud and bright, at Oakpool's dig. Like mentor like apprentice, she thinks, laughing brightly. Because Oakpool isn't wrong - as an apprentice, Birdsong had been notorious for getting into situations of her own making. Thinking she could do too many things at once, watching her mentor do a move once and proclaiming she could do it perfectly on her first try, then falling and - literally - eating dirt on more than one occasion. Of course, her inability to ever shut up as an apprentice hadn't helped. And sure, it had gotten her into trouble a multitude of times, but they didn't exactly live up to some of the scenarios that Birdsong, Leafstorm, and Oakpool would get into when they didn't have a single care in the world.

(birdsong remembers a time when leafstorm had accidentally made someone cry because of her innate ability to read their clanmates once she had been around them for a certain amount of time. it was a little terrifying at the time.)

But it was good - Oakpool would (typically) be the voice of reason whenever Birdsong got restless and needed to go go go, always managing to drag Leafstorm into everything because they were siblings and only ever separated when it came to training.

Birdsong softens, slouching a little bit further into the ground as they smile shyly at Oakpool. "I'm glad," they say genuinely, warmth sparking in their chest. Because for a while, Birdsong had doubted the choice - why Falconstar had picked them to be a mentor, how nothing seemed to go right...

But that was in the past. And Birdsong was better than living in the past. She would push forward, hold her head high, and keep moving like they always do.

Yet... sometimes, Birdsong thinks they could convince themself to slow down and stay in one place, if it meant for more moments like these.

"I don't think there'd be an issue," Birdsong purrs, flicking her tail. "He might like the chance to impress you." she adds as a joke, knowing good and well her apprentice would definitely try and do whatever it'd take to impress Oakpool and possibly get distracted in the process.

The silence between them is comforting. Birdsong finishes off their prey just as Oakpool stands to her paws. Birdsong shoots Oakpool a concerned glance and then nods in understanding as she speaks about finding Falconstar. She opens her mouth to respond, to say that, If Foxpaw would be alright going on the patrol, I would love to join you, but Oakpool is gone before she can even utter a single breath.

(they wonder if they jinxed themself a moment ago, by saying that they could slow down for a little bit with oakpool next to them. then, they brush that thought aside. that was doubtful - oakpool is a very busy cat. but it is sad; birdsong would love the chance to talk to her friend more without any worries or cares.)

Birdsong watches as Oakpool darts toward the medicine cat den, ignores the small squeeze in their chest, and stands to their paws to stretch. She rolls her neck as she leans back forward, quietly going over her thoughts for the day. There's not much left she has to actually teach Foxpaw - a lot of it is going back over things he's learned before and hashing them back out, making sure that he has them down and is comfortable and confident in it. As she buries the bones from her prey, she continues thinking.

There's probably a few battle moves I haven't taught him yet, they muse, scuffing dirt over the remains of her prey. And in a few days, he could train against another apprentice. She frowns in thought, mulling it over in her head as she pads toward the apprentices' den. Brackenpaw would be the closest in age and skill, and he's getting close to his warrior assessment; and he's only two moons older than Foxpaw... They would have to discuss it with Adderfrost, maybe, to see if he was okay with it. And if so, they'd have to double-check with both Foxpaw and Brackenpaw if they were up for it...

In the midst of their musings, they finally reach the apprentices' den. BIrdsong blinks into the darkness and calls out, softly, in case any of the apprentices were still asleep; "Foxpaw? You in there?"

β˜† ─── BLAZINGPAW.
    all that's left of myself;
    holes in my false confidence

    moonlitclan med. apprentice β˜† tom
    tags/mentions; fennelglow, kindlepaw,
    falconstar
    ───────────────────────

Blazingpaw didn't realize how lost inside his own head he'd been until he felt Fennelglow's tail brush his shoulder. His paws stop wearing away at the ground under him and he blinks, staring numbly at his paws, then glances back up to Fennelglow with a small blink of thanks. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, thinking. If he's dismissed, he might be able to find a way to loop back around and listen in on the conversation. He knows he's not near as sneaky as most of the warriors and some of the apprentices in the camp, but if they're too involved in their own conversation to notice...

He exhales and opens his eyes. It's... it's okay. He'll figure it out. He will. He will! StarClan above help him he will figure it out and he will make it work.

Fennelglow speaks again, addressing Falconstar, and he draws on the old pelt of confidence he'd started lacking. Focus and rationalize and figure it out as it goes. Blazingpaw's head snaps toward Fennelglow when she asks him and Kindlepaw to check to see if they needed any herbs. Selfishly, he's glad. Kindlepaw knows something - he's smart enough to know he can't make her talk about it unless she wants to, and he doesn't know her well enough to even warrant trying to breech the subject - so the fact that she's being sent out with him to get herbs.

Or, he's just overthinking everything, they won't talk about whatever mysterious prophecy that Fennelglow had gotten, and she does just genuinely need to have a conversation with Sootstar and Falconstar and doesn't want them meddling in it.

... yeah, that doesn't sound believable. It's likely about whatever it is he's not supposed to know about, but does anyway.

Blazingpaw chances a look at Kindlepaw, wondering how she would take his mentor's instruction. He could already name a few different things they needed - he'd been looking at it just earlier, after all - so they would have to grab a warrior...

Slowly, his mind kicks back into what he's good at. Fake it 'til you make it. He doesn't have to think about how StarClan doesn't see him fit to be Fennelglow's apprentice by not sharing the prophecy with him, he just has to think about what herbs they need, and if he or Kindlepaw should grab any extras of something while they're out and about. This is something he knows, and it's a good distraction.

"Alright, Fennelglow," Blazingpaw says, dipping his head toward his mentor. He draws up on his old energy, how he was a few sunrises before anything had happened, and stands his tail up. "C'mon," he says, turning to Kindlepaw. His tail flicks to the entrance, in the divots and cracks in the rock wall where Fennelglow showed him how and where things were stored, like her mentor had done before her, and so on. "I already know we're probably running low on marigold and cobwebs." And poppyseeds, he thinks, but doesn't say. He dips his head and skitters past his mentor and Falconstar, nerves from earlier not entirely dissolved despite his attempts at pretending they were.

β˜† ─── RAVENSIGHT.
    left at the graveyard,
    i'm driving past ghosts.

    emberclan's lover β˜† tom
    tags/mentions; cinderpaw
    ───────────────────────

Ravensight huffs a laugh at Cinderpaw's discomfort as he repeats Ravensight's advice. "Your favorite thing to do," he teases, trying to bring back up a good-natured, light-hearted front. But at Cinderpaw's apology, Ravensight softens. A sad look crosses his expression and he leans over, pressing his nose against the apprentice's forehead. "It's alright. I didn't mean to dump that on you - I should be saying sorry." He doesn't verbalize it, but Cinderpaw's weight against his side was comforting. At least some part of his family, even if not by blood, was still here in the living world with him. And he would fight tooth and claw to keep Cinderpaw and the rest of his clan safe.

Ravensight's expression tenses a bit at Cinderpaw's statement. I pray for the day StarClan helps us all move past this, Cinderpaw had said. When he looks up at him, Ravensight offers him a soft smile and a small nod, as if in agreement, but internally Ravensight sees himself losing a never-ending battle that he will make sure Cinderpaw never learns about. He doesn't want the young tom to doubt his belief in StarClan, and if praying to them and believing in them helps him, then who is he to say anything?

(but his thoughts circle back to the first thing he thought of when he woke up - had starclan abandoned emberclan before the attacks? why had they not sent any warning? why did this have to even happen? what did emberclan do to deserve this? the thoughts haven't quieted since the attack three moons ago, and he worries for the day they swallow him whole.)

Cinderpaw speaks again, and Ravensight pivots his full attention to him. He can continue throwing himself that internalized self-pity party later, when Cinderpaw is out of the den with Birchpaw or being shadowed by one of the MoonlitClan cats, when Ravensight knows that he is alone.

"Of course," the warrior says, slightly surprised by Cinderpaw's thanks. He'd never be able to turn away the tom - he wonders if he needs to explicitly mention that to Cinderpaw. Is there a way of saying that without being so overbearing? "I'm always here if you need anything," he finally settles on, hoping it doesn't feel like a tacky add-on. "You know me. I'm great with advice." There's a light gleam to Ravensight's gaze, tone lit in amusement. And, okay, he may not be the greatest at giving advice, but if it puts a smile on the tom's face, then it'd be worth it.

When Cinderpaw says that he thinks fresh air will do him some good, Ravensight's first instinct is to agree. Fresh air and a clear head can work wonders. But his immediate second thought is, "Just be careful." He keeps his voice low, not wanting to wake anyone else in the den. He opens his mouth then hesitates, wondering if he should offer his company, but finally settles on offering some likely unwanted advice; "Find an outlet. Don't just push it down." He wonders again if he should offer to go with him, but he knows space and air would do Cinderpaw good.

"You know where to find me if you need anything," he promises, quietly.

meadowhaze loves how the gentle bathe of the sun's beams make the camp look. almost always, she wakes early to sit outside the den, enjoying the warmth on her pelt with her eyes closed. those are some of the calmest moments for her, even if she has nobody to enjoy them with. it's why she doesn't particularly mind taking dawn patrols, and often is ready for them before other cats, with her already being awake.

that's no different now, as she sits and gazes across camp, musing over her own thoughts as she watches with great curiosity what her clanmates are getting up to and wonders where her apprentice is. becoming a mentor is something that she was nervous about at first, still being a relatively young warrior compared to some other senior members of the clan and less than confident of her own capabilities, but the thing she's most surprised about is how well her and her apprentice have bonded already. meadowhaze sees sweetpaw as almost a younger sister, wanting to keep her safe and feeling eager to pass down enough of her own knowledge that she's confident to serve as a warrior, following in the pawsteps of not only her clanmates but also their starry ancestors.

she'd have to admit that the compatibility is in part due to the fact she sees herself in sweetpaw in many ways. the nerves and shy anticipation are similar to how meadowhaze was at that age, and even how she acts now at times. she knows that she's grown, but the personality she had back then still shines through.

however ambitious foxpaw is, one thing he wouldn't describe himself as is an early riser.

if he could have things be any way he wanted, he'd laze around in his nest all day, nosing into fresh moss and chasing his dreams. it would make for a life far easier than that of the average clan member, but that isn't his reality. though, maybe the life he has isn't one he would complain about either.

now, he shakes himself awake, blinking sleep from hazel eyes and forcing fatigued paws to pull him upright. he stretches, the movement accompanied by a lazy yawn - and as if on cue, he hears a recognisable call echo around the den, that of his mentor. one thing that could always wake him up like no other is the promise of training and that was no different now, his ears pricked and tone eager as he responds.

"yes, i am! you got here right on time, i just woke up." foxpaw trots towards the entrance of the apprentice den, disregarding the idea that others might still be asleep after an early patrol, stepping out to face birdsong.

XXXIt was a bit of relief that Kindlepaw felt when Fennelglow sent them off to check herbs. She felt her fur flatten fully from its prickling state. Sorting herbs may calm her nerves for this inevitable talk. She could focus on the herbs, their scents and properties, and allow the familiar routine to ease her anxiety. However, she knew that a part of her mind would continue to churn with questions and doubts. What did Starclan see in her to send her such a message? That has been yowling, ringing, in her ears since the dream. They were present enough to send a prophecy here, then why not before? Couldn't they have warned Emberclan about the town cats before the war broke out? Why now, why now wh-
XXXKindlepaw dipped her head in acknowledgment, her yellow eyes meeting Fennelglow's gaze for a brief moment before she turned to Blazingpaw. She had been so ingrained in her own anxiety that she hadn't noticed his. But now, the other apprentice seemed to stand taller. She followed the flicks of his tail to their herb store, making precise notes in her head of where things were. "Marigold, Cobweb... got it," She parroted quietly and quickly back, an old remembering habit. She followed the other apprentice quickly as well, her mind going to work with what she'd been taught. The thought 'make Willowshade proud,' steeled her. She would live up to what her mentor taught her.
XXXIt took her a few moments to look over the way they organized their herbs. Her eyes darting to and fro, with maybe a glance or two back to where Fennelglow and Falconstar were, but mostly on the herbs at paw. "Add poppy seeds to the list," Kindlepaw stated, both to herself and Blazingpaw, "but other than those three... For middle of Leaf-fall you're looking decently stocked." She glanced over to him, shifted in place for a moment, then added in a whisper, "I didn't want to say anything but... I'm really glad that Fennelglow wanted us to do this instead of talk first..."

XXXSwiftcreek watched her kits morning antics with a fond smile. "Don't hurt yourselves," she chimed in, padding slower behind the pair but gently guiding them to the fresh kill pile. The queen's gentle orange eyes gazed over the camp. Many of her clanmates were already awake and she could scent that those of the new clan were as well. She actually spotted many of Moonlitclan already enjoying or finishing their breakfast. "What would you two like for breakfast this morning, hm?" She asked, having learned from her own mother to let her kits be independent, "we can share whatever you like!"

XXXOwlstrike, who had been idly watching the camp with his usual grumpy expression after he left the warriors den, perked up as Sandstorm approached. His rough exterior softened just a bit at the sight of his former apprentice. He saw a lot of himself, well his younger self, in the orange tabby and always enjoyed her company. "Well, well, if it isn't little Sandpaw," his gruff mew mixed with a laugh, "bringin' me an offerin', are you?"
As Sandstorm voiced her concerns, Owlstrike's expression turned back to serious. "I dunno, but I don't like it one bit, Sandstorm. Not sure how long Falconstar plans to play host to these outsiders," he mewed, his ears flicked back, "I know how leaf-bare gets 'round our territory and, if my joins say anything right now, it's gonna be a cold one. We'll barely be able to feed ourselves let alone six strangers. They should've found somewhere else to skulk around." He paused, took a bite of the squirrel, nudged it towards Sandstorm, and then added quietly, "if we're lucky, they leave before the first snow."

    moonlitclan warrior β˜† she-cat

    ───────────────────────

It's a little funny, Birdsong thinks. She's one of the earliest risers in the clan, just after Oakpool - and her apprentice is the exact opposite. But it's not something she'd ever fault him for - some cats are just naturally early risers. Besides, whenever she'd try to drag him out of the apprentices' den at the start of their mentor-apprentice relationship, it usually ended in a squabble.

"Good to hear that," they purr, smiling at Foxpaw. "I hope you slept well, at least. C'mon, go get something to eat. We've got a fun day ahead of us." They let Foxpaw take the lead - they'll follow him to wherever he wants to sit down to eat his breakfast.

They run through their mental checklist - when does Oakpool plan on taking the patrol? Would Foxpaw be alright doing a patrol and then turning around and doing training? They think battle training might be the best for today - maybe they should just do training and skip the patrol unless Falconstar explicitly directs the patrols or tells Oakpool who should go where? Birdsong doesn't think that would be an issue, considering that they'd spoken to Oakpool already and she knows that Birdsong plans on training Foxpaw today (and had even invited her to join or watch - StarClan, she needs to ask Foxpaw if that'd be alright.)

"Question for you," Birdsong asks, glancing over at Foxpaw. They wait until he's ready for her to continue; "I have an idea for training today. If Oakpool's patrol gets back early, would you be alright with her observing?"

    holes in my false confidence

    moonlitclan med. apprentice β˜† tom

    ───────────────────────

It's relaxing, honestly - sorting through the herbs to see how much they have left and what all he or Fennelglow need to run out and grab. He had been doing it just this morning, not too terribly long ago, and he realizes it's becoming a nervous habit to double and triple check the herb stock. Maybe it's because of everything that's been happening - with the extra minor scraps and cuts, with the EmberClan cats, with the thing he's definitely not supposed to know about - but...

Well. As long as Fennelglow hasn't noticed.

Blazingpaw's ears flick toward Kindlepaw as she speaks. "Poppy seeds. Got it." He's not surprised they need more poppy seeds. He briefly thinks of slipping Fennelglow a few, just to see if it would help her sleep - he knows neither of them have been getting enough sleep, but he knows she would be mad if he gave her the poppy seeds if they could've helped someone else in the clan. And he gets it - he'd be the same way. So for now, they just get to co-exist in the no sleep schedule mentor-apprentice duo. "We do our best to stay well-stocked in case of emergencies," he says, slightly embarrassed. It never hurts to be prepared, he thinks, forcing himself to not look at Kindlepaw.

He hears Kindlepaw shuffle, and he finally turns to her as she speaks. His ears prick at her words, and he glances over to where they had just left. He lowers his voice as well, beating back the thoughts of not good enough they'll see and forces an innocent curiosity to his voice. "What do you mean by talk?" he asks, gaze flicking between Kindlepaw and where they had just come from. He keeps his voice at a whisper, the same as the other apprentice. "I noticed things were tense, but..." Blazingpaw swallows back his emotions, threatening to become a little too real. He glances just over Kindlepaw's shoulder, off to where Fennelglow is. "Is it why Fennelglow's been so stressed out recently?"

Pearlwhisker nodded at Leafstorm's response, finding a smile on her face as the warrior returned her banter. She did often regret how little time she invested in getting to know her clanmates. Pearlwhisker knew Leafstorm all her life, they even completed their apprenticeship together, and yet she could hardly say 5 words about the she-cat. Her chest tightened as Leafstorm looked away to finish her breakfast. Perhaps she should do the same.

It was times like this, when Pearlwhisker felt so utterly out of place, that her mind would start to carry her to life outside the clan. That escapism is what lead her to befriend outsiders. She swallowed her mouse quickly at the thought. No, there was no point dwelling on that any more. It was over with. Pearlwhisker chose to stay with Moonlit clan, and in doing so meant that she had to try and make life work for her here. Surely it was not too late for her, she was still young afterall. And at the very least, there were new cats here who had no preconceived ideas about her. Cats that she could start fresh with. That she could try again with.

Leafstorm's question hummed in the back of her mind. Oh right, yes. She blinked her eyes a few time, a physical attempt to bring her racing mind back to the present. "Oh," she started, tilting her head upward as she thought about the question. She turned her gaze back towards the warrior. "Define big?" Her tail wrapped neatly around her paws. "Big would be I guess... trying to talk to the Emberclan cats." Her brows quickly furrowed. "Or maybe the usual.. her shoulders shrugged. "What about you? I'm sure you'll probably work that out with Birdsong." She offered a small smile. Pearlwhisker did not have anyone that took interest in her whereabouts or doings. Sometimes that felt.... freeing. Her eyes twinkled a twinge of loneliness as she waited for Leafstorm to respond.

Leafstorm watches, silent, as Pearlwhisker mulls her question over. She itches to continue eating her mouse while her campmate thinks, but she forces herself to watch. She's aware it can probably come off as weird or disturbing, but it's easy for her to make it look mostly-natural. (at this point, she thinks she probably has some sort of reputation for staring at her clanmates, but she's always enjoyed watching the clan and the cats around her.)

Pearlwhisker tilts her head up, then shifts her gaze back to Leafstorm, and Leafstorm makes herself blink, as to not seem like she'd just been staring at the warrior and had just been lost in thought. She tilts her head at Pearlwhisker's question - define big, she had said - but she doesn't get a chance to try and figure out how to elaborate. Her ears perked at the warrior's words. Trying to talk to the EmberClan cats, she'd said. In Leafstorm's book, she'd consider that a pretty big thing. Most of the clan doesn't trust the six cats. Not that she can blame them - she understands where everyone's worries and concerns come from, but she thinks some of them are a bit unfound. No matter how hard they try to hide it, five of them are shaken and traumatized, constantly careful of their steps and looking over their shoulder when they think no one is watching, and the sixth just seems to be full of guilt. If they were plotting anything against the clan, they would have done so by now - or, at least, not look so skittish. Or they're just very good actors, but Leafstorm is willing to bet that they're just scared and trying to recuperate.

"I think you should try it," Leafstorm says, tilting her head slightly in the direction of the den that had been set aside for the EmberClan cats. "They don't get to leave camp unless one of us is with them." At Pearlwhisker's question-comment about her figuring out her day with Birdsong, Leafstorm smiles in amusement. "I have the feeling Birdsong will have their paws full with Foxpaw," she says, gaze drifting over to the apprentices' den. She can spot her sister near the entrance, speaking with her apprentice. As if remembering that she did, actually, have to answer Pearlwhisker's question, she turns her full attention back to the warrior. "I don't have anything big planned today, actually."

Leafstorm's paws itch, and she takes a bite of her mouse so she doesn't fidget. She wonders if she should ask if Pearlwhisker would mind if she tagged along, should Oakpool not need either of them for a patrol at that moment. But she doesn't - she doesn't know how Pearlwhisker would react to the question, and she doesn't want to overstep any boundaries. For now, Leafstorm won't push anything, even if she finds the temptation to boiling in her chest. (she tries to quiet it by taking another bite of her mouse.)
