"What am I supposed to say?" snarled Leah. "I'm not going to apologize for starving!" Inwardly, she cursed at herself. Why did she say that? She should have just said sorry, even if she wasn't. Anything to get away from this alive. Still, her pride wouldn't let her take back what she had said. She glared up at the warrior.
Lightpaw nodded, her dark eyes wide. Forgetting about Grinner she rushed towards Eaglestar. Blood stained her white paws as she got closer, hesitating as she waited for Raccoonstrike. "Eaglestar?" she asked nervously, leaning down to look closer at the leader. All she got in reply was a rattling breath, and a choking sound. Then, silence--not even a breath. "Eaglestar!" she said again, terrified. She looked back at the others desperately. "She's not breathing!" she said, her voice strangled with panic.

" W e all carry a burden within our hearts. Some are heavy, some are light. Others are laced with thorns and needles and tear at out insides. No matter what the burden is though, it is ours and ours alone. We cannot share it, or destroy it. It exists, simply to exist.
And so it shall be."
He stared sullenly at the squirrel sitting in front of him. Overhead, the sky was a mixture of purples and blues, the sun casting off a dazzling orange hue that lit up his fur, turning it into the color of molten lava. His mixed eyes gazed steadily into the beady black eyes of his prey. They had been staring at each other for what seemed like hours, none daring to move. Hawk's ear twitched irritably, his yellow and ice blue eyes narrowed in boredom. He could feel a yawn stretching past his throat, and he forced it down, knowing that it would break the tension between the two.
It had started out as a simple hunt. Cat spies squirrel, cat stalks squirrel, squirrel sees cat and tries to run.... Bam. It should of ended at that. Instead though, the squirrel had locked eyes with Hawk and begun the mental staring eye contest that continued at that very moment. Hunger gnawed greedily at the sides of Hawk's stomach, and he resisted the urge to mew in protest. There was no way this could go on for much longer. Sooner or later, the squirrel would accept it's fate. So he was more or less surprised when a flicker of orange faded in his peripherals. Refusing to turn was his undoing. The fox snatched the squirrel, running swiftly back into the underbrush with his now dead prey. Hawk yowled and leaped to his feet, chasing after the small fox. He was only a few inches larger than the scrawny fox, proof of his wild cat heritage.
He leaped through the air, using a sun warmed rock as his springboard as he landed onto the back of the fleeing fox. Yipping in surprise, the fox dropped it's prey and twisted around, viciously snapping it's jaws near Hawk's shoulder. Big as he was though, Hawk easily slipped past those teeth and dug his claws in the fox's back, his teeth sinking into the back of it's furry neck and meeting bone. It would only take a few bites. Just a few, and Hawk would have a meal that would last him a whole moon. Sighing, he released the fox and leaped off, circling his squirrel and hissing viciously at the now fleeing fox.
Sighing, Hawk licked his bloodied paws, staring down at the dead squirrel. It wasn't even that plump. Shrugging, he tore into it, purring happily as his once empty stomach now filled with warm meat. Maybe today wasn't so wasted after all. He had even managed to catch up to the Clan's scent after a few nights of searching. Now it was only a matter of time before he ran across another of the clan cats.

Skypaw could hear her mentor's voice and padded out of the brush and stared at him then at the she cat." Um who is this?" She asked warily.

Breathless but satisfied, the mottled tom pulled away. He scanned the others, a spark of pride in his bright gaze. Raccoonstrike let out a slow breath as he turned his head to see his Clanmates. A tabby shape on the ground made his breath catch in his throat as he recognized Eaglestar. Suddenly a cat called his name, and he shook of the reverie that had addled his brains. Pebblerun was meowing something, Lightpaw had rushed over, and Eaglestar wasn't breathing. The dark warrior stumbled over, blinking in shock. The leader was streaked with red, her flanks eerily still. He flattened his ears. Something jolted him to his senses, and he backed up, his gaze flicking around. Although Pebblerun had asked Lightpaw to do that, he would assist as well. Cobwebs. He ambled over to the threads strung on the grass, collected them on his paw, and hurried back to the still shape of Eaglestar. He began to press them on the worst wounds, blood seeping into the sticky white bundles.

Leah stayed silent, not wanting to admit to weakness. She saw the warrior look up, heard the voice of another cat. Two against one, now. Her heart beat faster. She kept her eyes narrowed in a glare, but she could smell her own fear. She had to do something. He was distracted, and the small rogue took the opportunity to twist under his paws. Instinctively she slashed at his neck, hoping that even without her claws the blow would hurt.
Lightpaw felt sick. She knew leaders had nine lives--surely Eaglestar wasn't on her last. She'd wake up. She had to. Still, watching the leader lie there, so obviously dead--it was hard to believe she'd ever move again. Lightpaw looked up at her mentor's orders. "Yes, Pebblerun!" she responded quickly, turning to search for cobwebs.
Eaglestar felt warm sunlight on her fur, the soft forest floor--so different from the sharp grass--cradling her. She slowly opened her eyes, feeling more relaxed than she had been for a long time. Vague thoughts of pain and urgency faded, as if part of a bad dream. A familiar scent drifted towards her, and she turned towards it with a smile.

Pebblerun watched out of her peripheral vision. She remembered when her previous leader had lost a life. It hadn't taken this long, had it? Trying not to think of the time ticking away, she focused her attention on Grinner, waiting for him to get up.Sunpelt looked to answer Skypaw. " This is a rogue who thought it would be wise to steal our food." At the end of his sentence, he felt a paw slap his neck, though there weren't any claws. He turned back to look at Leah. " Well, it appears that our thief can't hunt. That changes things." He got off of Leah, letting her get up. " If you try to run, I'm sure Skypaw will have no probably catching you." He warned.( Paper-thorn, it looks like Hawk is free. Just look up a few posts to find it.)
