Redstar looked at everyone and retreated into his den slowly. The last time he saw a family member attack their littermate was when Firepelt killed his own brother Flamestep. Flamestep was Redstar's father. When he was only an apprentice, Redstar had killed Firepelt before he could kill his remaining son Waspfur. Waspfur was his only living kin; he was the son of Firepelt. He remembered the moments with cold dread. Those days haunted him. He laid down in his nest and rested his head on his paws, staring out into space. Before he could help it, he drifted away.
"Redpaw!" He blinked open his eyes and jerked his head up. He was in the apprentices den. The voice that called the name was terribly familiar. He exited the den and blinked his eyes against the bright light. He looked at the owner of the voice. It was his father, Flamestep. He stared at the handsome tom in pain. He had a bright red-orange tabby coat and amber eyes. He looked just as Redstar remembered him. Then a silver she-cat came padding up. Mother... he thought. "Redpaw," she meowed, her voice soft as silk, "It's time for Wasppaw's and everyone's warrior ceremony." He remembered this moment. "And afterward, your father and I are going hunting if you would like to join us." Redstar stiffened. Last time, he had said no. "Sure," he meowed, trying to sound happy. Maybe he could prevent his parents' deaths.
"Wasppaw, from this day forward, you will be known as Waspfur. Starclan honors your determination and loyalty." Redstar ran up to Waspfur. "Waspfur! You must come with us!" he meowed frantically. The newly made warrior shook his head. "You know I can't, Redpaw! I have to keep my vigil!" The tom smiled at Redstar. He panicked. "Please!" "No, Redpaw! And that's my final answer!"
Redstar followed his parents through the forest slowly. "Mother, Father, I need to warn you about Firepelt." Clearpool looked back. "Why, sweetheart? Firepelt is a great tom, very respected. There's nothing to be warned about." Redstar growled in frustration. "He's a murderer!" Flamestep narrowed his eyes at his son. "Redpaw, I expected better of you. You should know better than to make false accusations about your clanmates. Firepelt is my brother, and I know him better than anyone. Now hush!" Redstar growled, but stayed silent. There was a rustle in the bushes to their left, and Clearpool crouched down and stalked it. Redstar tasted the air. Firepelt! "Mother! No!" He yowled, but it was too late. Firepelt bowled over Clearpool and bit down on her neck quickly, instantly killing her. Flamestep stared in horror then growled. "Firepelt! How could you?" But the warrior didn't answer. He only tackled his brother to the ground, wrestling with him furiously. Redstar reached his mother's side. "Mother, no," he whimpered. If only they had listened to him, she would still be alive. He looked back at the brothers. "Redpaw! Run! Run now!" Redstar cast one more glance back at his father, just in time to see Firepelt kill him, and ran. He ran as fast as he could, but he stumbled on a large root. He landed in the dirt with a grunt and scrambled to his feet. He looked behind him - big mistake. Firepelt was leaping at him. His jaws gaped open into a snarl. His muzzle was dripping in blood. His paws were red with his brother's blood. His sharp claws were extended toward Redstar as he soared through the air. "No!" Redstar shrieked as he felt claws pierce his chest, then everything went black.
Redstar woke up gasping and panting. His fur was matted with sweat and his nest was scattered around the entire den. His heart was beating so loudly, he was sure that the others could hear it. He sat up from his nest and began grooming his fur, trying to calm himself down. "It was only a dream," he murmured, but it didn't help at all. The dream was all too real. The cries of his mother and father, the snarls of Firepelt. He could even feel the pain of where Firepelt had pierced him. Then he froze and looked down. Blood was soaking his soft belly fur. It was real! Firepelt had really gotten me! He thought with panic rising in his chest. The clan was not safe. Not one bit.
