Anika paused, ears pricking upwards as they picked up sound. A confused look flashed across her face, and she lifted her head to get a better idea of what the sound was. She could hear snarls, yelps, and whimpers. She looked back, seeing no one, but the sounds were very close.
"Hold on a minute," She said to the chihuahua, turning around and trotting briskly towards the sounds she was hearing. As she got closer, the noises became louder and Anika realized that there were other dogs here. One of the voices sounded farmiliar. After a minute, she could see small shapes in the distance, and then walked closer and closer until she could finally make out what the dogs looked like.
"Baxer?!"
Baxter looked at Goodie, fighting hard not to smack this guy in the face. But he wasn't going to give up on his lie just yet. If there was a way that he could get them to believe him, he might have a chance of getting away and then rubbing it in their arrogant faces afterward. He cowering, his floppy ears seeming to lower more than usual, avoiding the Alpha's gaze.
"Please, please don't kill me," He repeated. "I beg of you, please! Not for me, but for my family!"
Suddenly, Baxter picked up a sound. He leaned sideways, peering past Goodie's legs to see a small shape not many yards away from them. It took a minute for Baxter to realize who this dog was, and he supressed a wide smile. Anika!
"Anika!" He cried despretely, fear in his eyes and voice. "Anika, get out of here! It's too dangerous! Your mother must be worried sick!"
Anika stared at him for a moment, hiding her confusion. But she knew that face. He was lying, and wanted her to play along. She was small and young-looking enough to pass off for a pup. She charged towards Baxter, ignoring his words, stumbling clumsily a few times. "Daddy, no!" She wailed in a childish voice. "Come back, Daddy, please!" She ran right up to him, half-smacking into his shoulder before giving her "father" a long, dramatic nuzzle.
"Anika, please, go back," Baxter whimpered, nuzzling his daughter back. "I don't want you to die, too. Just try to understand, I-"
"Noooo!" Anika whined. "Daddy, don't go! Don't leave me, please!"
