Spiderheart lashed his tail. "I loved her as more than a friend, if that's what you're implying, but no. We never got to be mates. We were only friends."

"I'm sorry, Spiderheart." Herringpaw meowed, noticing that the tom was growing more irritated. "But, we mustn't dilly dally! Please explain to us exactly, in full detail, what happened. And lying just make things worse."

Graystream disappeared underwater.

"There's nothing more to tell!" Spiderheart snapped back. "And what in StarClan's name are you talking about? I'm not lying! I would never lie about something as serious as this!" His claws slid out. "Take your foolish games somewhere else and leave me alone!" Without waiting for a response, he whirled around, shoved Beechpaw out of the way, and stalked off.

"Hey!" Beechpaw yelled as she was pushed over. "Come back here!"

Oceansong slunk to a sunny spot in the clearing.

Herringpaw watched him, shaking his head slowly. "Poor, poor, broken soul." he murmured. The apprentice turned to Beechpaw, "No need to go after him, I've gotten what I need. Now its time for Salmonfall's questioning. You can ask this time."

Duckfeather rasped her tongue over Forestkit's small head.

Beechpaw opened her mouth to protest, for she felt that it wasn't very unprofessional to allow a suspect to run away like that, but froze when Herringpaw told her that she could ask the questions. "I can?" She grinned happily, and jumped into the air. "Yeah! Let's go!" She set off to find Salmonfall.
