xxxxxx the rich scent of the earth was fainter, only lessened by the distant hum of the far away falls, carrying the faint yet familiar comfort of the landscape she had known all her life. to the dark molly's ears, which pricked slightly as she felt briarseed settling back beside her. the young medicine cat had tended to their clanmates, the ones who sat around the area with apprehension prickling at their pawpads. as valiant as they appeared, sykestar knew better than any of the moons they had lived, that fear ran tendrils of ice through their veins. she watched them as moonlight sparkled over their pelts.

for a moment, sykestar pressed back against the pale colored molly, her eyes fluttering shut. she listened forward to the sound of the echoing vastness of the smoothing stones. cool to the touch, the surface they laid on, softened how hot their fur felt after such an eventful day. thankfully, the smoothing stones were always within paw reach, a reliable feature of their home that still stood. surrounded by cats who couldn't help but reek of fear and confusion, sykestar reached inward, to follow the tingling silence and rustle of night of, and slow her heart. all the pair of eyes that watched her closely, seeking out her pelt in the dark, sought answers to questions she didn't know.

stealing a moment to herself, in private, sykestar couldn't help how easily the memory surfaced: briarseed had stood at the highrock, with their medicine cat at her vanguard. the entire clan stood below them, even sykeshadow, who was deputy at the time, watched on with wide eyes of emerald. swirling beneath the rich color of her iris', she couldn't help how a frigid shock ran through her, betraying the image of her station as a reliable, and sure-footed deputy. briarpaw had stared back down, with eyes wide with fear, afraid to show excitement for this new position as a medicine cat apprentice.

later on, that evening, sykeshadow reluctantly visited the paw in the den, her gaze straying frequently from the herbalist' dwellings, as if the sight of the den burned through her pelt.

"s-sykeshadow?" briarpaw had asked, appearing at the mouth of the space. briarpaw had shared the same fear that sykeshadow had never presented to others, she wore that confusion and loss, like fresh blood on fur. a wound stained briarpaw's small gaze heavily when sykeshadow finally allowed their sights to align. "what happens now?" the question echoed, softly. the familiar words seemed to stretch over time, over moons, through all the seasons, kind and cruel, returning to sykestar now, on the drafted breeze of the falls mist.

"what happens now?" she heard echoed, her eyes flickering open. when sykestar turned to gaze at the cat beside her, she quickly absorbed the words being shared with her, in confidence, and in faith of her leadership. sykestar quietly swallowed a thickness she felt in her throat. briarseed was encouraging the broken clan to remember their fallen clanmate with suns of hope in her eyes.

"yes, yes that is what she deserved." sykestar responded faintly, her forest laden gaze slowly trailing over the cats around her, their faces all echoing the uncertainty that seemed to rise like a blazing sun, at what was to happen next to their beloved clan. sykestar rose to her paws, her ears flattening for a second at the smooth texture beneath her paw pads. her attention flicking to mistback as she dipped her head to the molly fighting her hardships to survive another moon.

"mistback, you demonstrated great loyalty and honor for milktuft. i know things appear uncertain right now, and it seems as if we can't rely on the earth beneath our paws, but we are here together." sykestar felt the words flow from her tongue, but she could barely trace what thoughts she was conjuring. the leader felt the position that guarded the survival of her clan, force her to her paws, force words from her maw, to quell the tension that rippled under the pelts of the sitting fallsclans warriors who gathered with hope and horror. had sykestar believed half of what she said? she wasn't sure. the molly didn't act with the fire she was known for, she felt hollow. "i commend your bravery mistback....," her gaze swept away from mistback's white pelt and to the stones that stretched out from under her paws, "we miss our friend in milktuft." sykestar's paws felt heavy with the grief she was hiding. she sat like stone as she spoke to the warrior. only a twitch of her tail and a sudden numbness in her front paws, betrayed the impression that she was made of elements.

rolling her paws along the floor for a brief moment, sykestar regained composure and let her gaze rest over the clan. "mistback?" she asked with a gentleness that had not been witnessed for many moons, save for the birth of her siblings, which at times, could have been considered something only of a dream, as sykestar had worn an expression of weathered hardship since the bestowing of her lives by her ancestors.

let milktuft be another guiding light in the dark night sky. sykestar watched on silently, blending into the furious stream of cats that was what remained of the fractured fallsclan.

Gullsplash
Warrior | 25 M | Male | Tags: none | Mentions: none

Gullsplash was still asleep.

Snakepaw
App | 7 M | Female | Tags: Firefly, Burntleaf| Mentions: none

Snakepaw was having a screaming fit about mud monsters, probably waking up half the camp. When Firefly tried to calm her down, Snakepaw smelled Firefly's scent. She smelled a rogue! Snakepaw jumped to her paws and ran out of the apprentice den, pushing aside Burntleaf, who came to investigate the noise. But the sun had set long ago, leaving the camp full of scary shadows. Even more terrified of the outside, Snakepaw scrambled back into the apprentice den. That little excursion made Snakepaw have enough sense to realize the rogue she smelt was Firefly. Snakepaw mewed, "I thought Mud Monsters were invading the camp... I guess I was dreaming." She stared at the unfamiliar silhouette of the newest clan member. "With your scent, I thought you were one of them!" As Burntleaf peeked into the Apprentice Den, Snakepaw murmured, "Thanks for checking on me. I'm okay... I think."

Gorgefang
Warrior | 48 M | Male | Tags: Pikecrest, Froststrike | Mentions: Gullsplash, Hopperpaw, Firefly

After Gorgefang heard Pikecrest and Froststrike's "respectful" comments, he had to say what he was thinking. He puffed up his fur and scraped his claws on the stone. He had been part of the rogues, so he knew how wrong those warriors were. "We have a reason to be afraid!" Gorgefang announced. "Rogues fight dirty. They will try to kill any clan cat they see! They won't hesitate to aim for the throat. It is almost certain they will claim more lives than will be taken from them." Gorgefang paused to think. He realized that in the impaired state the clan is in right now, it would be harder to fight the rogues. "We have limited medicine after the flood this morning, so we might not be able to heal cats in time between attacks. They will have practically an unlimited amount of fighters, while we only have a pawful, some injured from the recent mudslide!" He again thought about the retribution the rogues might put on Gorgefang, and all the other members of the clan. He had seen what they could do. But Gorgefang was determined to stay with the clan. He shot a dark look at Pikecrest and declared, "Not to mention, they know their territory well, while you'll be in unfamiliar lands. If I run away like you say I will, you'll have one less cat to guide you through. You need me." When Sykestar began to address the clan with Mistback, he tried to quiet down and calm himself.

xxxxxx eeleyes was tending to the nest of her bedding in the warriors den when she heard a harsh breeze broken by the sound of a cry. with her pelt still prickling from the recent horrors that ripped the land apart, injured her clanmates, and even brought some of them to the stars, her claws dug right into the ground, and she shot out like a fox from the shadows, her eyes wide and breath short. her hackles were raised, and her ears pricked back, a fierce growl threading in her voice. as the image of the disturbance appeared to be concentrated by the apprentice's den, eeleyes caught sight of burntleaf shooting from the nursery.

the kits! she thought. in an instant, eeleyes was a dark flash across the camp clearing, her paws on fire as she tore into the nursery, hair raised and a yowl of concern raised in her voice. burntleaf's kits, rather than cowering in fear, only appeared slightly dazed with confusion, the gleam in their eyes shifting to one of curiosity as eeleyes appeared before them. the flooding relief that ran under her pelt, was strong enough to make her stumble forward, a purr sounding from her muzzle as she reached them.

"ashenkit," she whispered with a soft breath as she nuzzled against the small tom, "strawkit and duskkit, thank starclan you're alright." the dark molly's tail flickered back and forth as she inspected the kits carefully, sniffing along their flanks. all seemed well, except for a small freight that was retreating into the depths of the approaching night, the younglings didn't appear very phased by the events transpiring at the apprentice's den.

consoled by the tiny heartbeats and small squeaks, she purred deeply as she licked their foreheads, smoothing the fur as she inhaled their distinct scent.

"where's burntleaf gone?" one asked, stretching up along eeleyes's shoulder, as if peering over the molly would help them understanding the situation beyond the nursery den walls.

"nothing that concerns you as of right now, strawkit." eeleyes replied, a gentle tease in her voice as she headbutted the young molly. strawkit bounded back just as quickly as she had been shaken off. eeleyes quickly found herself over-run by the kits, her back against the ground and belly exposed to their soft, well meaning pouncing.

"you've got me, i surrender!" she meowed playfully, her emerald eyes beaming with affection. duskkit seemed to settle on her chest for a long moment, while strawkit was batting at her pink paw pads. eeleyes felt the tell tale sign of teeth in her fur and twisted her agile body so that she caught ashenkit between her sheathed paws, playfully baring her teeth at him. "what do you think you're doing? it's going to take a hundren kittens to knock me down."

after some convincing, and grooming, eeleyes emerged from the nursery den with strawkit clamped around her tail, ashenkit balancing carefully on her shoulders, and duskkit charging forward towards the apprentice's den.

"don't run so fast duskkit!" eeleyes called out, her paws carrying her a steady pace across the clearing towards their father. as they neared the apprentice den, eeleyes had seen that more warriors had gathered, and that burntleaf sat over the young apprentice.

"burntleaf," eeleyes whispered loudly, "is everything alright?" her jade gaze gleamed with curiosity, "i didn't know what to think when i saw you leave the den, but i couldn't just leave the kits alone. is everything okay now?" she took a moment to absorb the details of their fur, "you look stressed." she meowed gently, "come, some other cat can manage this."as if on cue, ashenkit was planting his paws right above her ear, forcing her eyes shut as she happily swept her tail side to side, conveying no discomfort with the adventurous kitten.

Bramblefrost sat with his tail over their paws as he listened to his clanmates speak, his fur on end as he thought about the band of rogues that has made both his own life and the life of his clanmates more and more difficult as the days went on. Their last skirmish had been with his own mother and he had just healed from the scars she gave him. He frowned heavily and stood up, moving more centrally so they could give his own opinions once a spot opened up.

The usually kindhearted and calm tom had a look of anger on their face as his tail started to lash back and forth. His claws dug at the stone a little as the fur on his shoulders began to rise. He thought of his mother and it filled his heart with hate and pain.

Burntleaf | he/him | 24 moons | queen

locations: apprentice's den, mentions: eeleyes, snakepaw, firefly

Burntleaf blinked with worry at the apprentice. "Well, I'm glad you're alright, Snakepaw. I promise there are no monsters in the camp, even with all the terrifying things going on. We're all here to protect you as well. I may be a queen, but I'd take twenty Dark Forest cats any day!" he joked, trying to lighten the mood as he slid his claws out and pretended to pose threateningly.

A teeny body slammed into his paw, and Burntleaf turned in surprise, quickly recognizing little Duskkit. "Duskkit! I thought I told you to stay with Maplestream!" he exclaims, but then quickly relaxes as he sees Eeleyes with the rest of the kits. "Oh, thank StarClan, Eeleyes, I really appreciate you keeping an eye on them. I normally would never leave them, but I thought there was some kind of danger, and with the camp so empty..." He shivered, but then quickly licked Duskkit roughly to cover his anxiety. "Look at you, Duskkit! I leave for a heartbeat, and you're already covered in dirt from a brief run across the camp!"

Turning to Eeleyes, he purred at his friend. "Yes, thank StarClan, everything is okay. Snakepaw was just having a nightmare, poor thing. I appreciate you looking after the kits so much. It always eases my anxiety knowing you're keeping an eye on them."

Burntleaf nodded at Eeleyes' suggestion that they return to the nursery, then snorted at Ashenkit's antics. "Ashenkit, what have we said about staying away from eyes?" His voice was more amused than scolding though, as he knew Eeleyes put up with a lot from the kits.

He herded Duskkit with his tail towards the nursery, making sure that the other two kits were safely secured on Eeleyes. As they enter the dim nursery, Burntleaf breathes a sigh of relief before turning to Eeleyes with a friendly flick of his tail. "Want to stay a bit? I'm sure the kits would love to spend time with you, and I miss chatting with you! Especially after everything that's been happening..." The smile on his muzzle flickers for a moment, but he quickly recovers.

xxxxxx ashenkit had half the brain to appear bashful, retreating to eeleyes shoulders with a guilty gleam in his eyes. eeleyes chuckled softly, shaking her pelt in good nature while tossing burntleaf a forgiving smile. with their little claws securely caught along her fur, they rode the warrior back to their den, duskkit herded by his father.

the kits recovered quickly from the excitement of snakepaw's disturbing dream, and it brought the older warriors together in the nursery den. at the suggestion to stay, eeleyes nodded her head eagerly, "how could i go when these paws are just about ready to find some new trouble to sink their paws into?" it made eeleyes belly warm to know she was so welcome, and invited by burntleaf, to be around his kin and care after them. she had never quite expected to find a role in caring for kits of fallsclan, but she had no complaints about the other chores expected of her as a warrior. plus, with the additional concern that rogues were running lose along their territory after the terrifying mudslide, eeleyes felt safer being near the kittens.

as eeleyes settled inside, the kittens surrounding her, she dipped her head to the other queen, maplestream and flicked her tail against burntleaf's leg as the queen came to lay beside her, his gaze adoringly along his offspring.

"they're no pawful that i can't handle," eeleyes assured burntleaf with an affectionate purr, eyes swept closed as she licked over strawkit's shoulders. the young molly leaned into eeleyes's touch, returning the purr, her body trembling. having not missed how burntleaf's invitation had been marred by worry about the recent events, eeleyes shuffled her paws closer to the queen, laying one over his.

"i can't imagine being a queen at this moon, with three kits in my care. it's scary what is happening," she said softly, sympathy flowing in her forest-tinted gaze, "but i know that no harm would ever come to their little heads knowing how careful and attentive you are. how are you feeling since the mudslide and the rogue attack on hopperpaw?" fretfully, eeleyes couldn't keep her tail from flicking back and forth, displaying her anxieties.

"i know sykestar and spottedfeather are taking the security of the camp very carefully now. i don't expect that any cat could just run into our camp and hurt us. but still, everything happening so suddenly." not left to ruminate it much further, duskkit bowled right into his father, dazed for a long moment.

"duskkit, are you okay?" eeleyes inquired, sniffing along the young tom.

" 'm alright." he squeaked, embrassed before slinking behind burntleaf. "dad?" he asked, eyes bright, "what is a rogue?"

at the sudden inquiry, eeleyes gaze brightened as well, "burntleaf, you were mentored by sykestar, weren't you? i bet you have a ton of stories of your apprenticehood. right? were rogues an ever issue before?" her gaze were pools of well natured and guarded curiosity, she herself had history with rogues and didn't want the topic to incur questions from the queen who trusted her with his kits.

Burntleaf | he/him | 24 moons | queen

location: nursery, mentions: eeleyes, duskkit, kits

Burntleaf chuckled at Eeleyes comment on the little troublemakers. "Oh, I know. I swear, I was never this energetic when I was a kit...naptime is impossible with these three!"

As he settled down next to Eeleyes, a soft purr began to rumble through his body, seeing his lovely kits playing around them. He also blinked slowly at Maplestream as a greeting, then returned his attention to the current conversation. As Eeleyes put her paw over his, his purr deepened, appreciating the company of a close friend after all the turmoil.

At Eeleyes' questions, Burntleaf sighed thoughtfully. "I'm...so nervous. I'm so, so grateful you're here to help look after the kits, I can't stress that enough. And I'm so glad that Hopperpaw is okay. It's like...every time a cat dies or gets attacked, I feel like I see my kits in them. Someday they'll be old enough to fight and patrol and go out on their own, and it's terrifying. I'm not going to be a badger-parent and push them around or anything, but StarClan, it's so scary..." he trails off, lost in his own thoughts, but then he turns his head to the side to meet Eeleyes' gaze. His light green eyes met her darker ones, searching them to get a feel of how the other warrior was feeling. "How are you doing with all of this craziness?"

Burntleaf began to nod at Eeleyes' assessment of the camp security, but was quickly cut off by a small body ramming into his size.

"Oh no, Duskkit! Are you alright?" Burntleaf meowed, joining Eeleyes' in nuzzling the little kit to make sure he was alright. He rested his tail on the little kit as he crept around.

Burntleaf paused to think about the questions, both from Duskkit and Eeleyes', then purred, "Well, Duskkit, a rogue is a mean cat that isn't from the Clan! Loners are regular cats outside of the Clan, but rogues are the ones we have to fight. And I did have a couple run-ins with them during my apprenticeship..." His eyes softened as he began to reminisce. "Nothing like we're experiencing now, but every so often, one cat or another gets a little too big for their fur and decides to try to muscle in on FallsClan. I remember - well, this rogue and her group were chased away pretty quickly, but her name was, get this, Floofball! She kept her old kittypet name! I couldn't imagine going into battle being named Floofball." Burntleaf chuckled softly as Duskkit came back around from hiding behind him, drawing the little kit between his front paws and rasping his tongue over Duskkit's ears soothingly. Burntleaf almost opened his mouth to ask about Eeleyes' experiences with rogues, but quickly closed it as he realized that the question might stray into too personal territory.

🟊 ɢʀᴇʏᴅʀᴇᴀᴍ
location smoothing stones ; mood stressed stressed stressed

The gathered cats mingled, holding urgent discussions in small groups, while Greydream watched from a distance, trying to at least find some reassurance in seeing them together and determined to survive. This was her Clan. With whatever love was still left over in her, she loved them. This faltering, not-good-enough love manifested in the form of a guilty conscience, admonishing her for her inaction, urging her to be better, and, sometimes, offering some hope that she could. She glanced up at the star-blessed sky, deeply breathing in the special night air of a home that was once so beautiful. No, it could still be beautiful, still worth fighting for, so long as her Clanmates’ voices filled the camp as they lived their lives hugged by the mist, surrounded quietly by ancestors and loved ones. Tonight, Greydream was here with the living, not in her nest hoping to dream of the dead. That meant she could change, didn’t it? Surely it did? She turned her gaze back to the gathering, accidentally meeting Froststrike’s eye and immediately looking away. Oh, mouse-dung. She did want to change, but it was so hard.

She did not earn a second chance at capturing Froststrike's attention, but she could not help but listen in to the argument that began around him. Rogue-centric debate was always a sore subject for Greydream. The threat of them prowled her nightmares, bearing the likeness of uncanny creatures that were all fangs and claws and sharpness, existing to tear joy to pieces and cut life short. Even though she begrudgingly had to accept that Gorgefang was not a literal monster, she wasn't so sure about the others out there. To think that those things had attacked Gullsplash, ruthless enough to provoke him in his own home… it was a terrifying idea. She couldn’t put words to how glad she was that he had survived the encounter, but her thoughts kept pulling her into darker waters, reminding her of what might have happened, what did happen to Possumwhisker… her tail jerked to and fro involuntarily, betraying her stress.

As it turned out, her daughter’s thoughts had been going down a similar trajectory.

Swallowsight’s approach startled Greydream. The two of them had been living different lives for so long now, it somehow felt foreign to feel her company again. Her mind scrambled to figure out what Swallowsight might want to say to her, or what she ought to say to Swallowsight... At this moment, her little blue-eyed girl looked so lost, so tired. When she finally spoke, she used Greydream's name. Not "mum" - can I ever gain that title back? Then Gullsplash was brought up, chasing that thought away for the moment.

“He reminded me of you.”

The words landed like a stone lodging into her chest. At this point, the mention of Possumwhisker’s death in itself didn’t do much to phase her anymore - she’d already thought about it in every angle possible, it’s just about all she could be relied on to do thoroughly, now - but to hear Gullsplash compared to her was new in a horrible way. Outside the realm of possibility. In what way did she mean it? Gullsplash’s resilient and cheerful nature was one of Greydream’s few remaining big consolations in her broken world (along, of course, with Swallowsight’s quiet strength and warriors’ spirit). Surely, he couldn’t… she didn’t mean… “No…” she whispered pathetically. Instead of a greeting to her daughter, and some words of comfort, this weak childish outburst of denial was the first thing she had to offer.

Swallowsight kept going. A rush of words flooded, the weight and fear in them making Greydream almost want to flatten her ears and tune out the world and all the awful things peeking over the horizon. Almost. She knew now that she had to stop doing that. Otherwise, this may well be the final time Swallowsight, her baby, reaches out to her for anything. If she were to let that happen, Possumwhisker might not even forgive her on the other side. And how much time did she have left? She shuddered. She had to think.

So, while Greydream had been withering, Gullsplash had been letting seeds of vengeance grow. He had been acting irresponsibly, worrying his poor sister, the both of them clearly hurting on the inside more than she’d realised. This is my fault. How could she ever fix it? She knew she should apologise, but... shameful as it was to admit, it was just too scary. Swallowsight would say she didn’t forgive her, and then it would all, all be over.

She swallowed hard, trying to conjure up words to use. What would a cat worthy of being called mother say?

“Oh Swallowsight…” She trailed off. If only she had a sensible reassurance to soothe her with. She’d have to settle for honesty instead. An attempt at connection, not to the point of risk-it-all vulnerability, but not nothing either. “It… it’s scary. I’m worried too. I know you’ve tried so hard with Gullsplash, so…” When I should’ve been the one doing that. I’m so sorry I left everything to you. Please don’t leave me. She didn’t say these things out loud, but perhaps the quiver of emotion in her voice said some tiny part of it for her. “We’ll visit him, when the gathering is over and he’s rested a bit. Okay?” What exactly she would say to him then was a question for the future.

She held eye contact with Swallowsight for but a moment, just until the intensity and fear of rejection led her to turn away and seek Sykestar's form instead. If the leader didn't begin her speech and temporarily save Greydream from where this conversation might continue, at least she'd be something to look at that didn't hurt as much.

Bunnyhop's attempt at catching some gossip had so far been a failure. The noises around camp didn't betray anything he could fixate on. Fogwhisper and Ryepiper were too quiet, seeming, for the time being, to inhabit a world for just the two of them. Much like the rest of the warriors in their circle, those two were a mystery to him on most days. They were only about a year his senior, a and yet they seemed so grown up. Bunnyhop hoped one day he’d have somecat to exchange hushed mews like that with on nights like these, it would definitely beat the company of the wall of the warriors' den.

From another direction, he could hear growls from Rumblespout. That was never anything new, and always something Bunnyhop strived to avoid if possible, thanks very much. Still, his ears perked up slightly as he realised that Dapplepaw was the elder’s victim this time around. Thank StarClan she seemed to be okay! If he was to be completely honest, Bunny really wasn’t a fan of the apprentice, but he wasn't evil enough that he'd wish horrible things on a young cat like that. The very last thing the Clan needed right now was more tragedy.

A sudden commotion from the apprentices’ den caught his attention more fully, startling him enough that he fumbled with the branch he'd been trying to find a good angle for, sending it clattering through the leaves and causing a rustle that made him wince. Some cats moved towards the apprrentices den to investigate the noise, but before Bunnyhop could decide whether or not he would join them, an irritated hiss came from right beside him. Starlingflight had woken up, and he was not happy... yikes!

“Oh my whiskers, did I wake you?” He dipped his head submissively and let his ears droop back. “Sorry Starlingflight, I didn’t mean to. My bad.”

Bunnyhop felt guilty but also... indignant? On the one paw, he really should’ve considered that working on the den at night had a good chance of leading to this, but hey, he’d only been trying to help! It sometimes felt like he was only ever acknowledged for his blunders. By his siblings, parents, seniors, everyone. But he pushed the thought down into some cranny of his mind where it nestled among the other bitter ones, gave his den-restructuring progress a parting glance, and took a step back. He deserved a prize for dealing with things as well as he did, honestly.

“I wanted to try and be useful, and the den’s wall there was looking a little rough after the storm, but… I suppose it could use a good night’s rest, huh? Much like you do. Sorry, again.” Such was his signature move: a sheepish smile and dorky humour. The smile didn't reach his eyes, though, and he eventually gave into a sigh. "I can't sleep." With the uncertain times and the drama and his personal loneliness, he kinda wanted to go on an uncharacteristic nervous rant about it all, but no, this wasn't the time or place.

eeleyes (3) duskkit (1)

    | ━━━ 𝐄𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐘𝐄𝐒
age. 23 𝘮𝘰𝘰𝘯𝘴. gender. 𝘮𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘺 rank. 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘳 setting. 𝘯𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘺
    tags. burntleaf, snakepaw
    ( post three ✧ )

xxxxxx eeleyes tail flickered back and forth, the motion akin to water lapping to and fro a bankside, concern and understanding glistened in her eyes as she listened carefully to her close companion confess their fears. she felt his fear as if it was her own, causing her stomach to tighten at the horrible reality of the horror befalling her clan; she sought purchase in the soft den flooring beneath her paws, sheathed claws wanting the comfort of what she knew best.

"i can only imagine what fears run through your mind at night, burntleaf," the molly said softly, her eyes turning to the kits as she let the image of them playing beside them, outweigh the feverent imagination she knew all cats possessed in time of fear and danger. she did her best to push the worry away, she needed to be a rock for burntleaf and the worries that chased him through the forest they hardly recognized as their home anymore. "i've only known fallsclan to be resilient and dependable, but now..." her tone echoed his, her voice drifting only to silence softly as she watched duskkit chase her tail.

at duskkit's inquiry to rogues, eeleyes felt her fur stiffen as memories flooded her; slipping from the security of her camp, hiding in the unknown; all to steal moments away from the life she knew, for a rogue molly, who existed so tangibly in her bank of memories, if she spoke on the strange cat, eeleyes might actually summon her. claws reaching for the dirt of the nursery, eeleyes clung to the ground and fixed her gaze on the kittens once more.

apprehension that woven through her spine, nearly causing her fur to rise, but burntleaf soothed her worry as he explained what a rogue was, and how fallsclan fiercely defeneded their territory against them. "rogues are just...different from us." she added quietly, not certain if she had much to add to the conversation without revealing more about herself that the clan wasn't currently aware of.

when she disappeared into the undergrowth of her home, she was turning her tail on her clan, on rushingstar, fogfern, and other fallen cats, all for a mere glimpse of a cat she had found was making her question her loyalties for longer and longer than she could have imagined she was capable of. eeleyes wasn't proud of her actions, and in the end, she nursed a broken heart over a cat she never could have had. sometimes the lonliness of those moments came back to her, demand eeleyes make certain she had made good choices. moons ago, and it still hurt fresh anyway.

"we walk different paths," eeleyes found herself admitting, voice growing stronger and steadier, "rogues live by their own set of rules, and don't believe in starclan as we do. we are guided by caring for each other. rogues, well." her ears flickered and she looked away, shame coloring her green eyes, "it doesn't always matter how others live their lives, if one cat decides they don't matter. but, they're not all bad." as if she was softening the realities of a rogue, eeleyes pressed on, in a firmer voice, "but you don't befriend them, and if you find one, you run and hide, tell a warrior, burntleaf or i. we don't know what they want and that, can make them scary."

satisfied with her own explanation, eeleyes turned to strawkit and gently picked the molly up by the scruff of her neck, to draw her between her grey paws. quietly, she rasped her tongue over her fur, scenting the camp clearing's dust clinging to her fur, "honestly strawkit, how do you manage to get so dirty?"

something rustled beyond the nursery walls, eeleyes ears flickered towards it, her eyes narrowing sharply. protectively, she drew her tail around the third kit, and kept a watch at the mouth of the den. she didn't wish to alarm burntleaf, so she quietly glance at him and mapleshade. wishing to distract the kits from the unknown, eeleyes asked, "burntleaf, what lead you to name the kits the way you did?"

xxxxxx "let, me, go!" the young kit cried out, batting at burnleaf's caging paws. wriggling and twisting, duskkit made a great effort to escape but nothing quite worked against his parent's paws. they were so much bigger than his own, and secure. duskkit made a pointed effort to test his small teeth against his father; it seemed to have little affect.

quickly exhausted by the effort, duskkit resigned to a small, warming mass of fur, listening intently to the conversation between the two warriors. too young to understand the conflict in eeleyes gaze, duskkit kept staring on, curiously as the molly revealed her own interpretation of rogues.

"I bet they smell nasty," duskkit chirped, "like badger or the elders den!"

"i bet they smell better than you!" strawkit cried out competitively, a challenge gleaming in her small eyes.

"shut up, fur ball!" duskkit growled, lashing his tail as he playfully swatted at his sister. "it's not like you know any better!"

"i'm getting bored, can we go do something?" duskkit heard his brother ask.

"yea, can we burnleaf? please!!" duskkit whined, rubbing his paws against the queen's chin. "please, please, please!"

FROSTSTRIKE
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
age: 41 moons gender: male rank: warrior tags: Pikecrest, Gorgefang

Froststrike had let out a grunt when Pikecrest made a jab into his side. A good sign from her. Her feelings on the matter would settle down in time. At least he hoped so.

Froststrike’s hazel eyes turned sternly to Pikecrest as he heard the young molly speak with such open mockery towards Gorgefang. His eyes narrowed at her disapprovingly as she made the comment about Gorgefang fleeing from the clan. It was a low blow. The older tom had once been a rogue that that jumped from group to group, but Froststrike seen the work Gorgefang had put in to being a warrior of FallsClan. Gorgefang was still a bit more rough around the edges from having grown up as a rogue, but Froststrike believed the tom was now loyal to FallsClan.

“Pike.” The word was a low warning, once an often used warning he’d given her while she was his apprentice, when she had stepped out of line. He shook his head. After all these moons, had nothing of what he taught her about respecting her clanmates gotten through? If they were going to be going into a full on battle with the rogues, the last thing they needed was to weaken themselves with infighting. Like it not, Gorgefang and the other rogues turned FallsClan warriors would be great assets. They couldn’t risk alienating their own warriors when every single member of FallsClan would determine the clan’s survival.

When Gorgefang snapped back Froststrike, flattened his ears. This was going nowhere. Froststrike’s gaze hardened as he looked at the other tom, trying to read him better. There was a spark of something else in the former rogue’s eye as he spoke that Froststrike couldn't quite place. Something of determination yes, but maybe also fear? He wasn’t sure. The long haired tabby had lived with the rogues for a long time, he’d know how they operated, especially since he had jumped around throughout the different groups.

As Gorgfang made the last commit Froststrike had already started to stand moving to position himself between Pikecrest and Gorgefang. He hoped he'd act somewhat as a barrier, or deterrent between the two as the meeting would soon be starting. Froststrike flicked his tail feeling rather uneasy. “I don’t doubt your loyalty, Gorgefang.” Froststrike began in a low tone, trying to voice a few more words to settle things between himself and Gorgefang while he had the chance. “Nor that you know more about the rogues because you lived among them. Yes, we have taken a hit today, but that doesn’t mean we’ve been left completely helpless. The rogues are not a singular force for us to fight. I’m well aware of the danger of even just fighting one group, but I don’t think we are to be so easily knocked down. Have some faith in your clan.” Froststriek put a emphasis on the last words, hoping to encourage the other tom.

FIREFLY
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
age: 32 moons gender: female rank: apprentice tags: Snakepaw, Burntleaf

A voice coming from the den entrance made Firefly's jump. "I, ugh... I t-think so-" Firefly stumbled over her words afraid of what this other cat might have thought with Snakepaw yowling under paw. Firefly stepped back, her back now brushing up against the old log as the younger apprentice had suddenly bolted up and out of the den. She cursed under her breath, knowing she’d probably scared the poor molly.

Maybe Firefly shouldn't have woken the apprentice. Firefly was still a stranger to her after all. Firefly finally took in the cat that had padded up. The tabby looked somewhat familiar, but before today it had been several moons since she’d seen them. Firefly couldn’t even think of the tabby's name at the moment. When Snakepaw came back into the den, Firefly stepped forward wanting to ask if the apprentice was okay. However when dark gray molly spoke up and said she had thought Firefly was a mud monster, Firefly felt a bit embarrassed.

"ah.... well no mud monsters here. Just me." Firefly put on a smile, hoping to make the young molly feel better. The tabby that had come to check in was soon swept away by another warrior and a kit that looked to be a pawfull. Glancing back Snakepaw. "Sorry to scare you... you were yowling.... and I thought you had gotten hurt." Firefly paused, not sure what else to say. "Do you want to go back to sleep…. Or would you like to talk for a bit?"
