Silverstar nodded at Gentianstep's words. "You're right, we'd better leave Featherstone here. In fact, I think our gathering party should just be you, me, Flameflurry, and Thistledown. That leaves plenty of protection for the camp and we will be a small enough party to escape quickly if we need to" She shook her head, then replied to Gentianstep's question. "Yes, I think I will lead a hunting patrol. If I go on border patrols, the clan will think there is something wrong, it'll add to their worries" She looked around the clearing to see who was available to go on patrols. "I'll take Flameflurry and Sprigpaw. We'll head upstream and away from the Lightclan border. That should leave you enough for another hunting party and a border patrol." She stood and nodded to Gentianstep, then walked over to speak to Flameflurry. "Will you and Sprigpaw join me for a hunting party this morning?" she asked the warrior.

You know I will guard it with my life. But I expect to hear every detail about the gathering when you get back" He said lightheartedly, trying to lighten the mood. "I had better go start organizing patrols, it looks like we have a few warriors anxious to go out" He said with a purr. With one last nod, he stood and made his way to the center of camp to begin organizing patrols. As he listened to Foxstrike's request, he nodded. "Sure, you four go on border patrol. Make sure you stay on our side of the border, we don't want to antagonize Dawnclan by leaving scent trails over their border" He nodded to dismiss the young warrior, then looked around to see who was available for a hunting patrol.

Foxstrike nodded to Oakstone as he came to sit with them. His uncle was, at least on the surface, a grumpy cat, but Foxstrike enjoyed the time he got to spend with his family. "Doing fine this morning, thanks." He listened as his father invited Oakstone to go on patrol with them. He was excited to get to patrol with both senior warriors and spend time with them. "If you want to go find Pepperpaw, I'll go volunteer us for the border patrol" He said to Cedarstripe as he rose to his paws and touched the older tom on the shoulder with his tail. He started over towards where Sunstar had been sitting, then he noticed Bumblefoot was already organizing patrols and trotted over to him instead. "Cedarstripe, Oakstone, Pepperpaw, and I will go on a border patrol if that's okay with you, Bumblefoot?" When Bumblefoot gave his approval, Foxstrike nodded to the senior warrior then headed back to Cedarstripe and Oakstone to share the news with them.

The older apprentice was fast, and the two moon difference between them seemed to make Swanpaw faster than Amberpaw could keep up with. "That's not fair!" she said as Swanpaw pulled ahead of her. Not only was Swanpaw bigger, but she got a head start because Amberpaw was not prepared. She slowed as she reached the fresh kill pile, Swanpaw already there with a smug look on her face. "You cheated, you took off before I knew we were racing!" Amberpaw swiped a paw at Swanpaw.

After Salmonsurge teased him, Spirepaw's ears flattened and fur bristled. He hated teasing. Glaring at his mentor, he growled, "Well I will catch twice as much as you today." Her lesson about taking care of Queens and Elders sounded a little fleabrained to him. He thought only the medicine cats should do it. "Good morning to you," Spirepaw mewed unenthusiastically to Featherstone and Batkit. Spirepaw just wanted to leave and go hunt something nice to eat, but Salmonsurge kept talking about responsibility or something like that. Then she ordered him to play with Batkit later. Spirepaw rolled his eyes and meowed, "Fine, I'll do it after the patrols."

She later walked out of the den with a smile on her face, to hide her worries. She looked around for Whitewillow, her former mentor, finding him in the shadows at the edge of the camp. She walked up to him and respectfully dipped her head, mewing, "Good morning, Whitewillow. Can I ask you a question? I've been trying to teach Amberpaw how to fight, but I'm worried that her white pelt could alert her enemies. How do you stay hidden with a white pelt?"

While talking to Whitewillow, Flutterdrift waved her tail at Nectarpaw to say hi to him.

Kestrelpaw ran after the older apprentices, much more slowly given her younger age and lack of warrior training. Upon reaching the fresh-kill pile, she was immediately drawn to the prey there. While the other apprentices bickered, she looked over the pile; it wasn't that big, but it was only the morning and the warriors will be going out to hunt later. Noticing her mentor from the corner of her eye, she wondered if she should bring some food over to share. She waved with her tail at Fallenheart, hoping he would notice.

"I'm doing good as well," Oakstone answered his brother. "Though a patrol would be helpful in warm up my muscles a bit." Foxstrike volunteered them and Cedarstripe's apprentice for the border patrol; Oakstone knew how his nephew liked to help out with those. While border patrols ran a higher risk of encountering DawnClan cats, the patrol did cover a large area of the territory, and any signs of Grassheart would not go unnoticed.

Remembering another pertinent issue, Oakstone turned to his brother. "What are your thoughts about the gathering that's coming up?" He was already expecting not joining the patrol going to the gathering; it was quite rare for him to get picked and for a good reason too.

He turned to look to the warrior approving him, showing his annoyed mood to him, not even bothering to hide it. He listened to the warrior with pure silence he enjoyed how nervous that little fact made the others feel, the nervousness almost shined from Yhistledown, which made him a little proud of himself and a little bit annoyed too. He flicked his ears as he thought for the tom question "...why not, we can do a double training together, even if it may not bring any good to them, as aren't they like siblings?" he murmured. He thought too that if they did double training, he could really need to do anything for his apprentice other than sit down and look.

She stretched her legs a little bit "well you better go now, or you will be late for those patrols, it's hard to see what's going on inside the camp when we're inside the nursery" she meowed to her friend and Spirepaw.

He sat the near the medicine cat's entrance his eyes looking way at the leader there, he was a little worried about tonight's gathering, what if things go very wrong in there when the tensions are pretty high now after what happened between the two clans? A sigh escaped his throat as his thought was broken by the racing apprentices there, seeing his own apprentice with them, he made a smile as he looked at Kestrelpaw 'It's good to have friends...' he thought giving the young she-cat a nod when he noticed the tail wave of the young cat. He stood up and walked to the fresh-kill pile "morning Kestrelpaw" he meowed gently "I took you some space to the medicine cat den if you want to make your nest there now when you're a medicine cat apprentice?" he mowed to her.

He left his warm nest and padded out of the warrior's den, Shaking his fur as the cold weather fell on his still-warm pelt, making him chill a little bit. Yawning he stretched his legs, shaking his fur before looking around the clearing, his eyes immediately looked at Foxstrike there, making him feel rather embarrassed for some reason. Taking a deep breath he looked elsewhere toward where the leader and deputy were talking, probably about the morning patrols or tonight's gathering, he didn't really know what to think about meeting those in Dawnclan.

She speed up to run when Swampaw called out about the race, but as she figure out the call was merely to Amberpaw, she didn't really even try to run past the two, well for Swampaw doing the head start so suddenly made it almost impossible for the rest to catch her. She slowed down at the fresh-kill pile and looked at the small amount of prey, there were mice, birds, and a small squirrel likely a baby as it was pretty small and grayer-brown colored. She picked up a bird and looked at the two she-cats "hey stop it, or the prey will get back to life" she murmured as she took the feathers out of the small bird.

He looked at the group of she-cat apprentices there, flicking his tail as he walked past them. He was not sure if could he be pleased or annoyed to be the only male apprentice at the camp now when the Foxpaw got his warrior name and joined the warrior's den. Shooking his black pelt he walked over to his mentor and the warrior Flutterdrift who he overheard asking something about how to hunt with a white pelt. He sat down near his mentor but kept silent for now as they had a conversation going on and he didn't want to bother them with his training questions.

What about the medicine cats? The thought hung unspoken in Gentianstep's mind. Leaving the medicine cats behind was... unorthodox, to say the least. But after careful reflection, he decided that his leader's choice was correct. They could not risk bringing elderly Emberlight and frightened Beampaw to this potentially-violent gathering. Losing the two of them would send the clan into chaos. Another, more sinister worry refused to leave him at peace. Would bringing such a small party send a signal of weakness to LightClan? Would they use this chance to eliminate DawnClan's leadership, once and for all? Gentianstep shook his head as if to shake these anxieties out of it. "I trust your decisions, Silverstar," he responded with a nod, with finality. The deputy eased his fears with the methodical planning of patrols. "Of course. I'll begin assigning the border patrol and second hunting patrol right away."

"Good morning, Juniperclaw," Gentianstep meowed as the young warrior approached. He paused for a moment before answering, surveying the cats around camp. "Would you care to join me for a border patrol? Ask Salmonsurge and Spirepaw to come with us. They should be near the nursery." Just as he glanced in that direction, the gray warrior appeared out of the den. "I will come find you all once I finish assigning patrols."

"Thank you, Featherstone," Salmonsurge mewed with an appreciative look. Hearing Batkit's happy purr, the tough warrior found herself purring too. "Of course I'll play with you, Batkit!" she exclaimed, amber eyes alight. Turning to her friend, she continued, "We can train together too, Featherstone, once you're ready to leave the nursery. You'll remember your hunting skills in a heartbeat!"

Salmonsurge saw that her teasing had gotten a rise out of Spirepaw, just as she hoped. That competitive urge would push him to do more for his clan. "Catch twice as much as me? I'd like to see you try," she retorted slyly. Salmonsurge could tell that Spirepaw only half-listened to her lessons. She had caught that eye-roll, after all. But she wouldn't chastise him in front of the kits. Thankfully, Batkit hadn't seemed too hurt by his rude attitude. A discussion about his behavior would surely come later when they were out on patrol.

"You're right, I should go see Gentianstep. C'mon, Spirepaw. Let's go," Salmonsurge meowed, with one last dip of her head toward Featherstone. She flicked her half-tail to beckon her apprentice and stepped out of the nursery. The warrior then saw Zinniakit skipping over to play with Batkit. Maybe the two of them could become friends after all? "Oh! Zinniakit," she called out. "I brought a leaf for you kits to bat around. It's in the nursery."

As Beampaw strained to see his mentor in the dimness of the morning, he found comfort in the amber gleam of her eyes. He drew toward Emberlight's beckoning warmth, padding closer on delicate paws. A stone of regret sunk in his belly when he heard her rasping words. "No, no, you should rest," he murmured, already wishing he hadn't woken her with his plaintive mew. Beampaw darted to his mentor's side to offer support if she needed help standing up. Up close, he couldn't help but notice the dullness of her flame-colored fur. The young apprentice's whiskers drooped.

His mentor's question caught him off guard. "Um... yes, yes you did," Beampaw answered with a gulp. He remembered Emberlight shaking something out of a dried flower-head for their clanmates, but that something escaped him now. Perhaps he would have known the answer in some other circumstance, when bad dreams hadn't clouded his mind. He found himself shying away from her bright gaze, looking down at his paws as he murmured, "I think it was poppy... flowers?"

Sprigpaw couldn't help feeling a little disappointed at the patrol assignment. With both her leader and her mentor keeping an eye on her, she couldn't spare a moment for mischief. And she would be the only apprentice on this patrol, too. Her ears flicked, wistfully listening to Skypaw and Lightpaw's happy chatter. The bright-furred apprentice cheered herself up with thoughts of new adventures in the territory. There were lots of hunting techniques she hoped to work on. Dipping her head toward her leader, she mewed, "I'm ready, Silverstar."

Cedarstripe watched as his son left to propose their patrol to Bumblefoot. Foxstrike had grown into a fine young warrior. He turned to his brother, happy to see the grumpy tom relatively cheerful this morning. Of course, Oakstone had never been known for revealing his inner feelings. But his brother did pounce right on the prey when it came to the important issues. "Tonight's gathering will be a tense one," Cedarstripe meowed with a sigh. "I hope Sunstar will press Silverstar about Mousefang's murder, though I doubt those DawnClan fox-hearts will talk peaceably. Maybe some news about Grassheart will come to light." He privately suspected that DawnClan had taken their deputy hostage. Or maybe, they would share the news of her death with Sunstar tonight. But both his leader and his brother couldn't seem to let go of Grassheart's loss, so he kept these thoughts inside. Seeing Foxstrike walk back after securing the patrol, Cedarstripe stretched and took a step away. "I'd love to discuss this further, but I should go get Pepperpaw now. We can keep talking on the way to the border." He glanced over at his apprentice in the distance. Pepperpaw looked rather lonely as she picked at a bird, even though she was surrounded by other apprentices. The warrior's plumed tail drooped at the sight. Padding over to her, Cedarstripe meowed with warmth, "Morning, Pepperpaw! We're going on a border patrol today. Come join us once you're finished with your meal."
