"I want to see you here, at my side. I love you so much, Sageleap. Please don't leave me." She was sobbing, she couldn't help it.

She waited for Sageleap to finish her words. But she didn't. She couldn't. Her lip quivered and Willowsplash buried her face into her dead mate's fur, muffling her crying. She felt so much pain. She tried to embrace Sageleap's warmth, her scent, her love. As long as she could. As far as she cared, roots and vines could grow over her and slowly suffocate her and she would not mind. Is this why medicine cats don't have mates? To shield them from the pain of heartbreak? So they can function as a working unit rather than collapsing under an emotional weight too devastating to bear?

Silentpaw decided to join the others again before they realized that she, Copperstrike, and Thrushpaw were missing. She saw Willowsplash burying her face into Sageleap's fur. She approached Willowsplash and sat beside her. "I feel like I'd failed. I should have run faster, or tried to help Sageleap to fight off that cat. Sageleap's life will not be forgotten, and her death will not go unavenged." Silentpaw's claws curled into the ground beneath her.
