Snakestrike looked at his paws. There was NO possible way Goldenshine would pick him anyways.

Rainsong happily dashed out of camp after her leader. "Come on!" She called

Oakfrost went after her.

Rainsong sighed. The forest was so beautiful!

Goldenshine raised an eyebrow and stood up. "Seriously? This is what it's come to? I have to choose between you two? And so basically, you're saying, if I choose Snakestrike, I can never see you again? Huh, that sounds a little messed up to me..." Her lashed her golden tail. "Sandbreeze, you need to realize that even if I don't return your feelings, it doesn't mean I want you out of my life. You're still my best friend, and if I can't count on you, I've got nothing." She glanced back to Snakestrike, feeling her ears burn. "I know you're my friend, too, Snakestrike." She rubbed her head against his chest for a moment before pulling back to face both the toms. "But you both need to know that I'm still young. I can't promise myself to another so quickly. I love having both of you as my friends, and the cats I can talk to when I have a problem. Now you're making me choose, though. You two need to step in my paws for a moment and see things the way I do. I can't just choose one or the other."

Snakestrike smiled. "Thanks," He meowed. "I understand Goldenshine, I won't make you choose,"

Sandbreeze

Sandbreeze gritted his teeth. This wasn't what he wanted. He needed it one way or the other. "Goldenshine, I don't think you understand. As selfish as it may seem, I'm not satisfied with just being friends anymore. I need to know whether anywhere in there, you have feelings for me, or if you don't. It's simple. I know you don't want me to leave, but I wouldn't be able to stand it. And what if someday you do meet a cat that you fall in love with? Where does that leave me? Where does that leave Snakestrike. Yeah, someday you'll probably pick Snakestrike because he stood beside you when Sandbreeze went all crazy, but I can't do that. You have no idea how sorry I am, but I can't be your friend anymore."

Goldenshine heard herself growl softly as she flattened her ears. "So being my friend isn't good enough for you anymore? I have to love you or you just don't want me to be in your life? Okay, I see how it is, Sandbreeze." She turned and stalked off in the direction of camp, her mind racing. She couldn't believe this! Her own best friend was turning on her - just like that!

Snakestrike had no idea what to say, so he just followed Goldenshine.

Sandbreeze trembled. She didn't understand. It wasn't that she wasn't good enough for him, that wasn't it at all. It was that he thought that one day, he wouldn't be good enough for her. He knew he wouldn't be a good friend when his feelings got in the way. Maybe it would be better is she hated him. It felt like a badger claw to his heart as he thought that. This was the worst day of his life. He had thought that when they became warriors, things would change. They had. For the worst. Sandbreeze took one last glance at Goldenshine, and then he slipped away, understanding that his life would be different forever.
