Patchpaw
male dog - dalmatian/Saluki mix - crush: open - mentor: Cloudtuft - tags: open

He looked over at Gorsefoot not really yet knowing how to act around the male dog who becomes a deputy a second ago "So what? It's abandoned so we didn't trespass anyone's territory" he said sighing. He thought he was going to question the thing he and Spottedpaw said to them about what they saw into the abandoned lands.

Spottedpaw
female dog - dalmatian/ Saluki mix - crush: open - mentor: Berrybounce - tags: Deerpaw

She made a quick nod pawing the ground nervously, she didn't have prey to eat anymore so she didn't really know what to talk with Deerpaw if anything. She looked to the way the newly made deputy approved her brother Patchpaw "I think I need to go now, maybe we're going to check the odd things happening in Skypacks old territory" she said to him.

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Cloudtuft was alone. Her paws felt odd atop the dusty, uneven terrain, which couldn't belong to the beautiful, open moors of WindPack territory. That was clear as day. Clearer than this day, even, considering how dark it was. When she lifted her white head to seek comfort in the sight of the stars and her ancestors, she was met with a shocking realization. The reason for the darkness. The sky was empty, like a lake without fish. It was void of the brilliant light of the stars or even the gentle, soft glow of the moon. She could only see black, from one horizon to the other. Instinctively, she began to step backwards, eyes locked on the vacant sky all the while. To her horrible surprise, her hindquarters bumped into something jagged and unyielding. She whirled around to face the potential danger - and was faced with a tree, instead. It was so dark and everything was so unfamiliar and terrifying that she could barely even recognize it. Plus, how could there be a tree there? The sky she'd just examined a few moments ago was completely unblocked by any rising leaves or branches! She looked both the tree and the open, empty sky over again, the surrealness of the clashing views making her feel sick. She felt around her with a trembling paw, trying to deduce what her environment was like, when a cold, guttural laugh sounded in the still air. Cloudtuft spun around again, her eyes straining in the darkness to see what the sound had originated from, but it was futile. She couldn't see more than a few steps ahead of her and the sound seemed to resound from every direction at once. Then, she saw it: A huge canine, emerging from the distance. She felt a rush of fear as she identified it as a wolf. Or...was it? The body and that enormous skull certainly belonged to a wolf - a massive, muscular wolf - but one of the eyes, which almost seemed to gleam, did not. The left was golden, like a true wolf's. The right starkly contrasted it; it was blue, like those of some dogs she knew. The color of its eyes was the least of her worries now, though, as the wolf appeared to be making a beeline for Cloudtuft. Its huge jaws were parted in a big smirk, its teeth stained crimson. Their scent didn't reassure Cloudtuft that it might not be blood. The young warrior, optimistic as she was, couldn't hope to fight off a beast of that size and musculature. She turned to run, only to smack into a tree head-first. She redirected herself and tried again, this time tripping herself by getting her forepaw lodged under a root, concealed by the thick foliage. She shook out her fur, sniffling as she looked up with wide eyes at the wolf, now looming just ahead of her. Another dog, slightly smaller than the wolf but bearing an even more nasty expression, if that were possible, stood just behind it, outlined by an unworldly energy as red as the blood on the wolf's teeth.

Before the wolf could reach for Cloudtuft, several shapes burst out of the shrubbery. The wolf and its new companion didn't give any ground, but the presence of so many others seemed to deter them; both their grins had disappeared, the dog's replaced by a blank, calculating leer and the wolf's by a snarl so full of rage that Cloudtuft could almost smell it. Actually...she could smell fear, not anger. Fear that didn't belong to any of the dogs. But how could a beast like that ever be afraid? That was naive thinking, though; Cloudtuft knew that every creature, no matter how determined to be cool, detached, and strong, could feel. And fear was a feeling. She stared back towards where the newer shapes had emerged, when a big paw was offered to her, to help her up. Cloudtuft squinted to see who the helper was. She couldn't quite make it out, but, by scent, it was a female, and a very familiar one. She was pulled back to her paws abruptly. Confidence renewed upon perceiving the newcomers as friendly, or at least on her side, Cloudtuft turned to face the wolf once more, with less fear this time. I'm not alone, I'm not alone, I'm not alone...

Cloudtuft jolted awake. Feeling extremely disoriented, her head spinning, she looked around quickly. Where were the other dogs? Where was the wolf? Her eyes were drawn upwards when she slowly came to realize that there was light. Bright light. She shied away from the vibrant glare of the sun. The tickle of the long grass against her legs, which had been brushing her nose since, and perhaps before, she had risen was noticeable now and it felt like coming home. She heaved a sigh of relief. It was just a dream. I'm in WindPack. She didn't have nearly enough time to process it, though, as she could hear raucous cheering not too far from where she'd slept. Scaling the rough slope of the hill she'd been resting behind, she gazed down over its peak - and saw her packmates. The group that had gathered was gradually disbanding, but she knew exactly what must've occurred. A new beta was chosen? Aw! I missed it! Choosing not to focus on the negative aspect, she bounded down the hill, towards the group, thinking about how wonderful it was that the Pack was finally moving on and would be more able in the future because of it. She peered around at everyone to deduce who'd been selected, although there was really only one dog it could possibly be. Her eyes landed on Songbreeze, and it suddenly hit her. I asked her to investigate SkyPack land with me. She must've been waiting for ages! Hoping she'd catch it, she threw the fellow moor runner a warm, rather guilty smile, its mucky nature accentuated by a wild mess of white fur, jutting off in all directions like it had been ravaged in a storm, the stubborn crust clinging to the corners of her eyes, and the glistening of her nose, still extra slick with heavy sweat. Then, she noticed Stagstar, and a bit of her composure melted away. If he remembered, they'd be off to ShadowPack land any second now to see Velvetstar about Cloudtuft's transgression. The young she-dog had to remind herself to maintain her faith that the other Packs could be reasoned with, unlike what her packmates seemed to believe about them.

He followed Spottedpaw's gaze to Patchpaw and Gorsefoot. "Okay, good luck with that! I'll talk to you later," Deerpaw murmured and padded back to the medicine dogs' den. He was a little sad that she had to go, and he hoped that Dunlinfur would be able to mentor him today. The medicine dog apprentice missed constantly having the company of another dog.

Stagstar nodded, sensing that whatever Dunlinfur had to tell him was of importance to the medicine dog. "Yes, of course. Let's go to my den." The leader led the way through the crowd, and descended into his den. It was unusually warm, most likely because of the sun shining brightly on the soil, heating the den. "What's wrong?" he asked, brown eyes gentle, yet sharp. Stagstar was going through all the possibilities of what could disturb Dunlinfur so much. Hmmm... perhaps he saw something he shouldn't have. Is it Shadowpack? I didn't get to speak with him yesterday, it could've been.

Songbreeze spotted the messy-furred, sleepy-looking Cloudtuft smiling sheepishly at her, and felt a stab of annoyance. Really, Cloudtuft? With a huff of annoyance (huffs of annoyance seemed to be common with the moor-runner when it involved Cloudtuft), Songbreeze smiled back, but the smile had meaning of it's own. Where in Starpack have you been, why did you miss the meeting, and why do you look like you're coming out of a tornado?

G O R S E F O O T

| unknown mongrel | beta of windpack | 35 moons | location: camp | tags: Patchpaw

"Even if it's abandoned, we can't just go running around it whenever we want. Especially if what you've told Songbreeze and Cloudtuft is true. You and your sister may nearly be warriors, but that doesn't mean you two can leave WindPack territory without supervision."

Gorsefoot couldn't keep from scolding the male, being eleven moons, at least one of them should have known better than to go off without a warrior. He let out a sigh, shutting his eyes for a moment to collect his thoughts before returning his brown gaze back to Patchpaw. This is only the start of being a beta. I didn't think it would be like this,

"I trust that what you've told Songbreeze and Cloudtuft is true, though. Yours and Spottedpaw's help will be valuable if Stagstar decides that it's alright to investigate."

Medicine Dog
With Stagstar

Relief flickered across his face as he followed Stagstar into the alpha's den. As he passed into the shadows of the hollow in the earth, nervousness suddenly grasped at his chest. Dunlinfur was not a fan of keeping all of these thoughts and feelings held inside of himself, but it also occurred to him that he was about to admit something that might not go over terribly well. Still, that hesitation was extremely short-lived. He blurted out his problem almost before Stagstar could ask.
"They're real! I mean, I played along'n all. Seemed only right, since it was so important to everybody..."
That was no good. Dunlinfur realized he was rambling, and shook his head to clear it and calm himself. He needed to be articulate so Stagstar would have some clue as what he was trying to say.
"Sorry. It's just... StarPack. I've been lyin'. I thought it was just silly stories, but I think I might'a been wrong. See, I had this crazy dream last night and, well, I didn't quite know what to do. I figured you could help me make heads and tails of all this."

Stagstar nodded, watching the medicine dog's face closely. He had sometimes wondered about that. Dunlinfur, being a rogue, most likely hadn't grown up with stories of Starpack, and then believing something so, well, against what he'd been taught was probably hard. "What was the dream?" Stagstar asked him, sitting down, though still studying him. Thousands of questions were longing to burst out of his mouth, but only asked the one. What was the dream?

He listened to the newly made deputy, not really knowing what he could say "eh? So we just wait and see what's going to happen or what Stagstar decides?" he said with a sigh, "I think we could investigate little more, it's looked like a large operation there, who knows when it will reach to our lands?" he said.

She looked over to Deerpaw, before going to her brother and Gorsefoot "so are you talking about the thing we saw last night?" she asked looking over to the two dogs.

WindPack
Medicine Dog
With Stagstar

Dunlinfur doubted Stagstar would be terribly upset at his lack of -or perhaps previous lack of- a belief in StarPack, but it was reassuring that he took that news so well regardless. It was generally comforting to talk to someone about all this who understood. Dunlinfur hardly knew what part of all this bothered him more, to he was grateful for Stargstar's single, focused question. It seemed they were getting right to the "heads and tails" part. The medicine dog mirrored the alpha and sat as he revealed what he had seen in his dream.
"It was mor'uva nightmare, really. I was running, in the dream. Somethin' terrible was chasing me, just outta view, but snarling and feral. As I ran, I passed through all the packs' territories. I saw... Terrible things happen to those dogs. Blood everywhere. I have no idea what coulda..."
Dunlinfur trailed off for a moment, glassy-eyed as he re-lived the horrors of his nightmare. Vague as he was in telling it, the ruined corpses were ever fresh in his mind, but he did not let those memories keep him from finishing his story.
"Anyway... The creature. It caught up to me, pinned me down and went right for the throat. It was a dog, but not one I know of. A big- no, huge black she-dog. Messy coat. Marks in white and dark brown, and the bluest eyes, cold as ice'n twice as mean. Just when I was a goner, everything... Changed. It was just black everywhere, with stars all around me. I heard a voice. It said I... Well, it said I needed to quit bein' so hard-headed and let StarPack talk to me. Be more open, r'somthin', though what that's supposed to mean, I couldn't guess. The important part is this. The voice said I had to remember what that dog looked like. Said she was gonna make some terrible trouble for everyone like what I saw earlier in my dream. Not just WindPack. Everyone. So, I remembered, and, well... What do you think?"
It all sounded crazy. Maybe it was crazy. Dunlinfur would not be surprised. It was so much to come to terms with. He hoped Stagstar would have some advice that would make it all make sense.
