Clan Cat Names

Names are extremely important to the Clan cats; because a name is supposed to describe him or her, a cat's name states who he or she is.

There are two parts to each Clan cat's name: Prefix and Suffix. The prefix is the first part of the name, and the suffix is the second part.

About Prefixes:
A prefix typically describes a physical attribute. It is given to a cat by its parent/s at birth, and remains with the cat for the duration of his/her life (except in a few circumstances, which will be explained later). The prefix is ALWAYS capitalized. Some examples of prefixes are: Rock-, Gray-, Fern-, and Dappled-. More examples will be listed later on.

About Suffixes:
There are four types of suffixes: Kit, Apprentice, Warrior, and Leader.

Kit Suffix: The kit suffix is ALWAYS "-kit." No exceptions. A cat must be younger than six moons in age to have the suffix "-kit."
Apprentice Suffix: The apprentice suffix is ALWAYS "-paw." No exceptions. A cat must be older than six moons in age to have the suffix "-paw."

Warrior Suffix: A warrior suffix usually elaborates upon the prefix. It is given to a cat by the Clan leader when he/she becomes a warrior, and completes the cat's name. The suffix is NEVER capitalized. Some examples of suffixes are: -claw, -stripe, -whisker, and -pelt. More examples will be listed later on. A full name is one compound 'word' - so, when the above suffixes are paired with the previously listed sample prefixes, you get the names "Rockclaw," "Graystripe," "Fernwhisker," and "Dappledpelt."

Leader Suffix: The leader suffix is ALWAYS "-star." No exceptions. A cat must be made the leader of a Clan by StarClan itself; there are only four cats with this suffix at a time.

Not every suffix goes with every prefix. Because a name says something about who a cat is, it should make sense first and sound cool second. As awesome as "Rockfire" might sound, rocks do not very often produce fire. While "Feather-" is a perfectly acceptable prefix, and "-stone" a perfectly acceptable suffix, how often is a stone as light as a feather?

Prefixes can also be used as suffixes, and vice-versa. However, one must take into account that some prefixes may not work as suffixes, and some suffixes would sound weird as prefixes. For example, Ear- or Eye- would sound pretty strange as a prefix! Eyepelt? Not working. Eartail? Even worse.

Special Cases Involving Clan Names:
Name Changes: As stated above, a cat's prefix stays with him/her for his/her entire life - but there are circumstances in which this rule may become an exception. Sometimes, a cat will do something that is significant enough to earn him/her a new name. When that happens, the leader of the Clan will hold a ceremony. The leader will ask StarClan to take away the name of the cat, because it no longer stands for who he/she is (again, this is why names are so important to the Clan cats - names define who they are). Then, the leader will give the cat a new name. Examples of new names could be: Tornear (a cat who had an ear ripped in a battle), Notail (a cat who has lost its tail), One-eye (a cat who has lost an eye).

Double Letters: If a suffix starts with the same letter that the prefix ends in, a dash is put between the two parts of the name. One-eye, above, is an example of this. Other examples might include: Hawk-kit, Lost-tail, and Shadow-whisker.

Non-Clan Cat Names - Rogues and Loners

Rogues:
Because the term "rogue" describes a hostile cat who has been exiled from his/her Clan, all the above rules apply to rogues. A rogue keeps the name he/she had at the time of exile.

Loners:
Lone cats have single-word names that typically describe them in some way. For example, a solid white cat might be named "Snow" or "Frost." Or, they might be named for something in the environment - "Grass" or "Berry." Typically, the name is a word that is also a noun, such as "Reed."

Loners don't have two-word names; that is a trait specifically belonging to Clan cats. It is only very rarely that they have Clan-style names, and so they are not accepted in the dream unless there is some IC reason that occurs in the dream and is approved of by the staff. In the books, Ravenpaw would be an example of a loner with a Clan name. While he originally came from a Clan, he is not a rogue, because he was not exiled and is not violent towards the Clans.

Sometimes a loner will have an unnatural name because he/she does not belong to twolegs, but is around them a lot - like Purdy, in the books. In this case, the kittypet naming rules below apply.

Kittypet names vary widely; they can range from Fifi and Fufu to "people" names. These are names you would give to your own cat at home. For example....

Since loner names are only one word, most of the above prefixes, and some of the suffixes, may be used as a loner name, as long as it follows the guidelines stated in the Loner section above.

Unacceptable Names

Despite the numerous variations possible for naming your character, it is time to introduce the types of names that cannot be used under any circumstances in DoaNE. They may seem pretty, unique, or 'match your character,' but you must remember that this dream aims to mirror the Warriors series' set rules as closely as possible.

A cat's name not only shows its status in the Clan, but it says something about who that cat is, so naturally they are very important. There are also some important standards names go by. Because these cats are feral - and can't/wouldn't understand humans even if they aren't or weren't - human elements are not allowed in names. This includes things like seasons, science/technology, and mythology, among other things. This page is meant to outline some of the "don't"s when it comes to naming your character. Though not every name will be listed here, please note that if it's not on the list of allowed names, there is a good chance it wont be allowed at all. Feel free to consult a staff member if you think a name would work, or aren't sure.

Human Terms
Human terms, such as "winter," "autumn," "car," "road," "quicksilver," "midnight," and "house" cannot be used, because the cats simply don't know them. "Winter," for example, is called "leaf-bare" instead. Fall or autumn is "leaf-fall." A house is a "twoleg nest." A car is a "monster," and it travels on a "thunderpath," rather than a road or a street. Instead of "midnight" and "noon," the cats use "moonhigh" and "sunhigh." None of these terms are acceptable as names.

Gems and Shinies
The names of precious gemstones, how ever 'cool sounding' they may be, are not accepted because the cats do not know of and/or have no use for them. This category includes such words as "ruby," "diamond," "emerald," and "pearl," as well as precious metals (with the exception of silver and copper, which are both used in the books). Some exceptions may be made for kittypet names, as in the case of "pearl," but for the most part, these terms are unacceptable.

Mythology
Cats do not share the same mythology as humans, so they don't know what dragons, gryphons, phoenixes, vampires, Greek/Roman gods, and the likes are. In their world, the three big cats in their legends are their mythical beings - lion, leopard, and tiger. These are also the only three big-cat names accepted. Also included in this category are "good/evil" type names, such as "Angel," "Devil," "Demon," and "Heavenly."
Some exceptions may be made for kittypets or loners who have been around twolegs for a long time.

Non-native Species and Places
Many animals, such as giraffes, simply do not live in Britain, where the dream's continuity is located. Therefore, only species native to Britain - such as foxes, badgers, voles, mice, and various fowl, may be used in names. Even if one of these animals were to, say, escape from a zoo, the cats wouldn't know what to call it. There are three expceptions to this, due to Clan cat mythology: the Lion, the Leopard, and the Tiger. The same goes for plants; there are no cacti in Britain, or sequoias, or bamboo, etc. There are also no deserts, oceans, or seaside beaches in the middle of Britain (although, naturally, the coast will be), so names such as those, or any other type of non-native land type, is unacceptable. Although some of the aforementioned items may be found elsewhere, they are not located in the area that the dream is set, and still may not be used.

Negative Connotation
Would you name your child "Blood," "Evil," or "Death?" Probably not. And neither would a queen naming her new, beloved kits. Because a name defines, in essence, who and what a cat is, giving a kit such a gloomy name doesn't bode well for him or her.

Celestial Bodies
Clan cats hold the moon sacred, so they do not use it in their names. Likewise, the word "star" is reserved only for leaders, and cannot be used as a prefix. Planets are not known to the cats, so they're out, too. "Cloud" is acceptable as a prefix or suffix, and "Sun" has been used as a prefix, but as a general rule, if it isn't in the earth's atmosphere, it can't be used as a name.

Emotions
"Anger," "love," "happy," and other emotion-type words cannot be used as names. Also unusable are words such as "hope," "greed," and "thought." An exception is the suffix "-wish," because it is listed on the official Warriors website - and the prefix "Dream-" because it has been used in the books. As has been said many times, a cat's name defines it - and you can't very well be defined by something you can't touch, like an emotion.

"Fancy" Names
Words you dig out of the Thesaurus or from an Elitist/Wolfscript list are not necessarily good names. These include words such as "Swarthy," "Ebon," "Optics," "Auds," "Brunet/Brunette," "Obsidian," "Bane/Baneful," "Alabaster," "Pallid," "Ecru," and "Scintillation."

Names that Don't Make Sense
Why would a black cat be named "Snow?" Why would you call a white cat "Soot?" Names should describe the character's physical attributes, and/or some aspect of his/her personality. In addition, the two pieces of a Clan name must make sense together. For example, the name "Redfur" makes perfect sense for an orange-furred cat - but since a cat's eyes cannot be red, the name "Redeyes" would make no sense. Other examples of unacceptable combinations would be "Silverflower" (when was the last time you picked a metal flower out of your yard?), "Roseflame" (a rose on fire?), and "Grassfur" (is the cat green?).

Uncategorized Names
If you are unsure of whether or not a name will be acceptable, ask first! Just because a name is not listed here doesn't mean that it is acceptable. There are hundreds of names to find and list, and we simply can't list all of them - just like we can't list the hundreds of acceptable names.

Frostwing padded into the camp, the sun reflecting off of her white fur the same way it would off of the freshly fallen snow that was all around them. In her jaws hung a limp rabbit, one of the unlucky ones whom had not yet returned to their burrows for the snowfall. The snow white she-cat did well hunting during Leafbare due to her snow white pelt, and her eyes that just looked like a flash of grass in the snow at first. Placing her kill in the freshkill pile, Frostwing padded over to an area of the camp that was covered by one of the few trees that were in the territory so that she wouldn't have to lay down in the snow. She then begun to groom herself quietly.

Shadowstalker emerged from the nursery, a few spare scraps of moss and twigs off of his shineless black pelt. The tom had just finished patching up some holes in the barrier of the nursery to fix a draft that was in there. Didn't want any kits getting sick in this weather now, did we? Seeing that it was still snowing, the golden eyed tom grumbled. Due to his completely black fur, he had the toughest time hunting in the snow, not to mention the fact that he wasn't the most graceful hunter to begin with.

CliffClan

Sootpaw padded out of the apprentice den and smiled cheerfully to find snow covering the ground. Not looking out where she was going, the girl managed to stumble across a patch of ice, and loose her footing, causing her to slide a few tail-lengths across the rocky floor of the camp.

Rockstar despised the snow and ice that happened around Leafbare. It made the already lacking prey on the mountain even more lacking. Feeling something bump into him, the pale gray tabby tom looked down to see nobody other then the local annoyance of an apprentice that was always getting in trouble it seemed, or going missing or something, Sootpaw. Glaring at the gray striped tawny she-cat, Rockstar meowed in his gravely baritone voice, "Stop playing around on the ice and get to work, or else we might just have to start calling you Sootkit again, Sootpaw."

Pyshical Description
Nightstar is a short-furred pitch-black she-cat; a Bombay, to be precise. She has sharp claws she uses to climb trees and a long, flicking tail. She is medium-sized with a lithe frame and rather long legs which come in helpful for crossing water so she can stay above surface and for chasing quick, nimble prey. She has green eyes with dark-green flecks in them.
Personality
Nightstar is considered by many to be an 'unsuitable' leader. She is still rather young, and her outgoing and mischevious nature sometimes gets the better of her. She is flirtatious and friendly, and hates to be judged; she is more than capable of leading her clan, and dismisses any idea of being innappropriate and rude. She can find good things in everyone and respects those older than her.

(Accepted, though can I make a slight change to Moonpaw and Sunpaw's names? Warriors hold the moon sacred, thus they don't use it in names. If going by color, something like the name Chillpaw (Chillbreeze, Chillstorm, Chillheart, other combinations like that Oh! Or Chilleyes) or Icepaw (Iceshard -shot- Iceclaw, Iceheart -that would be one coldhearted cat xD- And -burst isn't really used as a suffix. We could easily replace -burst with -blaze, and still get basically the same effect :> Also. After looking back over them... -storm wouldn't work well with Leafpaw's kind personality, as storms are fierce and stuff. Leafwind, Leafshine, Leafpath would all work better. Oh and seeing how Sunpaw isn't a domestic cat breed, but a breed of large cat.
