Serenity Moth Stables
Magdalena Mezzanotte straightened up and placed a hand over her eyes to block out the bright sunlight. She'd been weeding along the pasture fence when Cookie, the resident Australian Shepherd of the stables, started barking and running along the fence. Lena watched a rusty orange pick-up truck pull off the road and park in the dirt lot beside her baby blue truck. Her ranch manager, William "Woody" Valkoi, stepped out of the pick-up truck.
Lena laughed as Zyxanthiel, her favorite stallion and the mascot of Serenity Moth Stables, raced up to the edge of the fence. The chestnut stallion shuffled his hooves and tossed his head as Woody waved to them. Lena waved back and then motioned toward the tack room on the other side of the house, trying to tell Woody where he was needed without actually shouting. The ranch manager lifted a hand and headed off.
"You know Woody has work to do, Zyx," Lena said as the stallion snorted and glared at her. "He'll find my note about that big pothole in the road. The smaller ones are okay, but when they get that big it's time to take care of them." She bent down to continue weeding away the plants clinging to the pasture fence.
