with their eyes glittering mischievously, both young apprentices snuck out of camp -
"quickly!" shadepaw snarled playfully, practically gliding over the ground alongside his
sister, "we need to get away fast!" soon they were darting through the reeds and laughing
on the riverbank. the heavy scent of fresh-water fish made both the cats growl with
hunger. "do you wanna see" raven paw challenged, starting to smirk, "who can fish better,
and whoever wins, gets the other's fresh-kill?".

to this day, i wish i had said no, we both should've listened to our mentors when
they said "never go near this river; too strong, too dangerous" but we ignored them
and i turned to my sister and said;

"you're no match for me, i can fish way better than you!" the tom laughed mockingly. the
two siblings raced to the rocks in the river, then with one feisty glare they began striking
out in the water, their claws scraping against smooth scales and rocks. both of these cats
were inexperienced when it came to fishing but, just like their father, both were very
competitive and wouldn't miss the chance to grab some extra prey. "almost!" shadepaw spat,
the slippery fish wriggling out of his paws quickly, "i bet i've still done better than you though,
huh?" the sleek black apprentice didn't receive a reply from his sister and turned immediately
as he heard a loud, thundering splash as raven paw crashed into the rushing water. she lashed
about heavily with her paws, hissing in panic. her brother leapt back onto shore and chased
his sisters flailing body downstream, his body trembling with fear. then suddenly, her silvery
grey head was pulled beneath the fast surface and shadepaw gasped - she was gone.

i would say that was the last i ever saw of my sister but it wasn't, when i got back to camp
the horror continued; i was soaked to the skin in water and still trembling - from shock, the
cold, manic fear. the leader sent out a search patrol and as night fell they returned with my
sister's bedraggled body. our medicine cat said she drowned, but we all knew what happened
from the state of her, an explanation wasn't needed to tell us she suffered. i should've been
punished for sneaking out of camp, but my leader said i had suffered enough - i was allowed
to grieve in peace with my mother but i never forgave myself for letting her die that day, i
still blame myself, i miss her, to this day, i blame myself.
