according to the universal law, everything must exist in a balance. dark and light, good and evil, day and night. originally, this was the law of the valley and the canyons, ruling the cats that lived within it, until their leader caused uproar within the community. in the beginning, there was only one clan, known as reedclan, after the leader that ruled over it. reedstar was a tyrant who got what he wanted through power, control, and force. no one dared oppose him, as he was the only reason they had found refuge and safety from the outside world and all of its threats inside the cradle of the valley. he divided the clan into three groups, hunters, gatherers, and laborers. they each did exactly as they were supposed to. gatherers went out to bring back herbs and supplies for the medicine cats and laborers, hunters did all of the hunting work for the entire clan, and laborers were tasked with building and expanding dens, which was a perilous job given the location. reedclan's original camp was located inside the canyon's gorge near a river, and digging into the canyon walls could create landslides. many laborers were injured and killed.
eventually, there was a revolt amongst the laborers, and the gatherers quickly joined, as their duties had become dangerous as well. many gatherers were attacked by eagles and other predators, and some were as young as new apprentices. reedstar's first strategy was to overpower them throughout any means, manipulation and brute force being the most common. exposed rebels would be publicly humiliated or worse, and soon, everyone collectively realized they needed to get rid of reedstar and his followers.
however, that wasn't how things went. reedstar had a group of cats that he favored, who were spared from the hard work, and they were the most loyal- as well as some of the strongest. when the rebels were unable to overthrow reedstar and his posse, civil war broke out. this war continued for ten days and ten nights, raging on at any given chance. random attacks from each side were not uncommon, and many cats were tasked with constantly staying watch. multiple plans to assassinate reedstar were unsuccessful, and eventually, the rebels were given the option to separate themselves from reedclan and find a new territory, somewhere beyond the canyons.
the group left, leaving only a small portion of cats in reedclan. they travelled for many days and nights, eventually settling in a peaceful forest clearing, on the opposite side of the valley. peace, however, didn't last long. many cats had opposing ideas on how to run things in the new group, who should lead, etc. so, a compromise was foraged. three cats were elected as leaders, and they would take those who agreed with them and find their own territories nearby. they would have meetings once a moon in the clearing where they first settled, and that would be that. the new leaders were a tom named windstep, the new leader of the marsh and moor, a molly named swallowfeather, who took her group to the forest, and another tom named bravewing, who found a home in the willowy swamp.
windstep's group became known as moorclan, swallowfeather's became juniperclan, and bravewing's group became hazeclan. the three clans developed systems, where they elected diplomatic emissaries to become their deputies and meet with each other each fortnight to discuss more private issues and provide aid to fellow clans in need. they abandoned the systems that reedstar had created, opting for warriors, who did civil duties as needed. the clans got along, and there was never worry of war or much conflict beyond simple, petty matters. they didn't hear of reedclan until well beyond the deaths of the founders, several generations down the line.
they lived in peace and harmony, until trouble arose one morning, when broken-looking reedclan cats began appearing in territories not belonging to them. they were emaciated and dirty, looking worn out and miserable. with claims of wanting to escape reedclan and that their leader had over-hunted the gorge, leaving them with nothing, none of the other clans wanted to take them in. but hazeclan did, and something doesn't seem right about the situation at hand.
