Emily drove home with the horse trailer attached to her truck. While she was home from college for the next month plus, she wanted to make sure that she continued to keep up her riding. She had won a championship and was expected to continue to impress. Emily pulled up to the house and noticed a new truck. She was exhausted from all the driving. She sighed and shook her head. She swore that if the new who ever it was gave her trouble or even thought about touching her prized horse, then she would have him fired immediately. She didn’t care who he was or how good he was. Nobody was to touch midnight except on her orders. Emily carefully drove down the long driveway to the barn. She smiled softly seeing her dad and the new horses he had been talking about. She waved happily and pulled her truck up to the barn. Emily climbed out and talked to one stable hand who said everything was already ready for midnight and her. She began to undo the trailer and smiled seeing midnight inside. She opened it up and let her horse out into the free pen to run around for a bit after the long trip. Emily then headed into the barn to finish the stall for midnight. She turned to go and get a bit more hay when she ran right into him. She hit the ground pretty hard and scowled. “Hey...watch where you...” She looked up at him and glanced him over. “are going....also, don’t touch midnight ever. I will take care of her. She is my horse and gets the best treatment and training. My trainers and doctors will be in this week so make sure they get to her.” Said Emily. She smiled simply. “The name is Emily by the way...Jason Smith is my father.” Said Emily as she turned away. She wanted to end on that as if to give a warning which hopefully didn’t come across as harsh as she thought it did. She wasn’t that cold blooded. She just wanted things done right.

Logan sighed as he looked around at the barn. Today was hot out and it wasn’t just because so man pretty girls were out. He bit his lip as he reached for his water. Logan took a sip and wiped some sweat from his brown. He glance to the side recognizing that Emily was back from college. Emily and him went way back. She was practically like a a sister to him. He was glad she would be around. He finished his water and headed back to work. Trying not to get in her way as he continued to clean out the stalls. He heard her give some guy trouble and wondered who on earth had set her off that much.

That’s went he spotted Ryan. Logan chucked a bit to himself knowing that Emily was a force to be reckoned with at times. She was one that he knew better than to get in the way of. He shook his head and finished up before head to grab some hale bales. Man it was going to be a long day.

Arabella followed her GPS directions to her new home, she had only been to the house a twice before today, once to view it and once to sign the papers and get the keys. As she drove down tattered back road she turned into the driveway, her neighbors seemed to be out and busy already. As she put her truck into park she got out, groaning as the heat hit her like a brick wall, “Seven months pregnant and you decide to move in the middle of summer. What a great idea.” She mumbled to herself, she knew her movers would be here within an hour or two so she decided to go ahead and unpack what little she put in her truck, opening the crates in the truck bed she watched as her two dogs, Maverick and Goose, hopped out and began inspecting the new property. While they stayed nearby she carefully grabbed a couple of boxes and some bags, balancing everything she tried to shut her truck door with her foot before jumping as she heard someone speak up behind her.

Ryann had taken up helping Jason for the summer when he wasn’t on his own property tending to chickens and horses. He had gotten there early this morning with some fresh eggs in trade for some fresh fruit he’d take home later. As he got right into his work cleaning out the stalls and feeding all the horses, he had missed the sound of a truck pulling up the drive. He’d heard all the commotion recently of how there was a young woman moving in the house across the way from Logan’s. He’d be interested to find out more about this new neighbor, it wasn’t often people came to such a small town unless they were trying to get away from something. He snapped out of his thoughts as he felt someone slam into his back, turning on his heel he raised his eyebrow and offered a hand to the woman to help her up, “Name’s Ryann. No worries ma’am I hear you loud and clear. No one touches her but you and your people.” He said, watching her walk off he shrugged and got back to work, she was cute and firey. He’d have to try and win her over though to get to know her better it seemed. As he finished up the last of the stalls he made his way over to see if Logan needed help with anything.

Emily looked at him. She was pleasantly taken back by the kind reaction back to her. She softly continued on her way to make sure that the stall was all good. She waved to Logan and started to feel more at ease. It had been way too long since she had seen her best friend. She would have to catch up with him later since she saw the mysterious man head his way.

Emily headed back to her trailer and unloaded Midnight. The horse was a bit unsettled but she knew it had been a long ride. She got her horse settled in before she continued to unload her trailer. She hoped that maybe there would be some new girls or people around town she could hang out with. She loved Logan but he was like her brother. She glanced over at Ryan. “Hey I’m sorry about earlier. I shouldn’t have been so rude” she said quietly.

Logan nodded at Ryan and smirked. “I see you have met the princess” he joked shaking his head. “Really though. She’s actually an amazing rider but she can come off strong. I think the first time we ever met she beat me in a race.” He said. He shook his head and waved to his good friend. “Yeah actually can you get the other horses some hay and feed. Then maybe check to see if Em needs help finishing unloading the stuff in her trailer. I’m sure it’s full since she just finished her last semester of college.” He said. “Oh and I promise she will come around. She’s a good person.” He said. He turned and headed out of the barn to check on the animals outside and to refill the water buckets.

Arabella placed the boxes inside her doorway and headed back out to the truck, she opened the door and whistled for the dogs, watching them load into the back seat before shutting the door. She clambered into the driver seat and moved her truck out of the driveway so the movers would have plenty of space. As she put the truck into park she looked up to see a man headed her way from across the street. Maverick, her German shepherd, barked at him from the back seat, while Goose, the golden retriever, wiggled excitedly. She called Maverick off and smiled softly at the man as he approached, “Hi, I’m Arabella.” She said sheepishly, offering her hand out the window, “Sorry for the racket my moving truck is almost here and they’ll be moving all kinds of stuff.” She laughed nervously, “I also have to apologize for Maverick, he’s my guard dog and he can be a little over the top sometimes.” She said nodding to the German shepherd who was trying to squeeze his head between the seatbelt and the window.

Ryann chuckled at Logan and bumped his shoulder with his own, “That’s one way to put it for sure. I get it though, I wouldn’t want people messin’ with Warrior. I’ll get those horses fed and then see if she needs help with anything.” He said with a warm smile, “Oh hey by the way, you got a new neighbor cross the street. One of the ladies down at the diner said she’s a real cute one too.” He grinned and nudged his arm before heading off to take care of the horses. Once he finished up he headed back to see if Emily needed any help with anything. “Hey no worries sweetheart, I’m the same way about my prize stallion I get it.” He chuckled and motioned to the trailer, “Anything I can help you with? I don’t mind doing whatever, I’ve got some time to kill today.” He chuckled and smiled warmly at her.

Emily watched Logan wander off. She blushed softly and nodded. “Thank you. I would appreciate it. I’m moving back home from college so I’ve got a bunch of stuff. If you don’t mind of course. The boxes on my seat need to go into the house. They go in my room. “ she said. She smiled softly and grabbed boxes leading the way inside. “Thank you. I appreciate the help especially after being rude earlier.” She said softly as she threw her stuff down. “Are you from around here?” She asked softly. She didn’t recognize him from anything that she could recall.

Logan laughed. He shook his head. “Good luck with Em and I’ll have to check her out.” He said as he made his way out of the barn. He walked towards the woman and went to the window to pet her dog whom was wiggling so excitedly. “ oh no worries maam. Do you need any help? I finished up with my work at the barn. Someone mentioned seeing a moving truck so I wanted to come and check to see if you may need help.” He said. He smiled a bit at her. He was curious about her whole predicament but know it was none of his busy. “Also, I work across the street so if you ever need anything” he said gently.

Arabella smiled sheepishly, “Are you sure? I’d hate to burden you with all of my mess of boxes and such.” She laughed sheepishly before speaking up again, “If you insist on helping it’s only fair that I make you lunch in return.” She smiled warmly at him before getting out of the truck, she wore a spaghetti strap dress that was a deep forest green, her swollen belly showing just how pregnant she was. She opened the back door and the dogs jumped out of the truck and sprinted towards the house. She reached in and grabbed her last bag and hiked it over her shoulder just as the moving truck backed into her driveway. She looked up at Logan and smiled sheepishly, “So, mystery neighbor, Do you have a name or am I supposed to guess it?” She teased lightly.

Once the movers finished unpacking the truck they drove off, leaving the house full of boxes and covered furniture. The young blonde woman took a deep breath, she was not looking forward to unpacking everything, especially with her unborn daughter pushing into her ribs. She rubber her side and got to work carefully unpacking things and pointing out where different furniture went to Logan. Before long the house was unpacked and she brought him a glass of iced tea, “Thank you again…” She smiled softly at him.

Ryann smiled and nodded, happy to offer his help up. He helped her bring things inside and upstairs chuckling softly, “Sorta but not really. My grandparents lived here, I lived a few towns over growing up. I spent a lot of summers here when I wasn’t on the road for rodeos. I moved here permanently about 3 years ago when they passed away. I took over the ranch and been running it since.” He said softly, “I try to help out as much as I can around town so I’m not over here often but I told your dad I’d help him out with the farm in the mornings.” He smiled warmly, watching as she moved around the room, “If you’re looking for new people though you should know y’all got a new neighbor cross the way. Young woman from what I’ve heard.” He hummed softly, placing the last of the boxes down, “I was thinking, might throw a lil get together tonight at my place to welcome her to the town, grill out, start a bonfire by the pond.” He turned and smiled warmly at Emily, “You’re more than welcome to join us.”

Emily smiled softly as she listened to him. She knew that she recognized the man from somewhere and once he said rodeo the lightbulbs went off. “I think I showed Midnight at some of those rodeos and if I recall you’re pretty decorated cowboy.” She said softly. “I’m sorry about your grandparents. Thank you for helping out with my dad. Since my mom passed he kind of bit off more than he can chew so I appreciate the help.” She said. She sat on the bed and looked up at him. Her eyes studied him lightly. “I’ll have to bring her some muffins or something. “ she said.

Emily’s eyes lit up when he continued. There was nothing better than a bonfire. Emily hadn’t been to one in ages. “Oh that would be lovely. College parties are great but there’s really nothing better than a bonfire.” She said. She bit her lip as she looked at him. She could get used to him being around.

Logan smiled. He graciously accepted the tea and lunch as he helped her unpack. “Oh I’m so sorry my name is Logan. I work at the ranch across the street. You have to meet Emily. She lives across the street on the farm.” He said gently. He continued to work before sitting on the ground to play with the dogs. “How far along are you? You’re pretty brave moving here alone” he said continuing.

He assumed that she was a strong woman. She must be some kind of special and she was surely beautiful. “Is there anything else that I can do to help? Oh and would you want to go to a bonfire with me later?” He asked gently. He took in a breath.
